[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

I woke up to the sound of a quiet engine slowly revving. I tried to move and noticed my entire body was sore. All of my muscles were aching, my joints were stiff, and it was almost a strain to breathe.

When I opened my eyes, I saw that I was lying down across the middle seat of an SUV. Nikolas was driving, Ryan beside him riding shotgun. They were both stone silent, watching the road.

I wasn't scared. Terrified is more the word to use. However, my body was too physically exhausted to do anything about that. I remembered very clearly what happened before I passed out and I was slightly relieved that Nikolas and Ryan were still with me. I'd rather be with people I know than complete strangers.

“Where are you taking me?” I feebly whispered. I wasn't sure if they would be able to hear me, but I decided to try anyway.

Nikolas's eyes flicked up to meet mine in the rearview mirror while Ryan turned in his seat to look at me.

“To get you some answers,” Nikolas replied.

“Where's Miv?”

“Sleeping in the back seat.” He smiled. “After the threat you gave us, you don't have to worry about her at all.”

I smiled, a little comforted. “Is all this going to be explained?”

“In as much detail as you ask for.”

I laid there for a moment, contemplating on whether or not to voice my next question. I wasn't sure I even wanted to know the answer.

“What's on your mind, Danni?” Nikolas asked, genuinely curious.

“You can't just read my mind?”

He smiled again. “That's a bit rude, don't you think?” He paused for a second, glancing between me and the road. “Besides, I can't hear your thoughts during this part.”

“Why not?”

He looked back to the road. “We'll explain it all soon.”

I nodded, taking in the information as I fell silent. The question was still lurking in the forefront of my mind, wanting to be asked.

“You ever going to ask that question?” Ryan asked, eyes looking straight at the road.

I hesitated for a second, unsure. “Are you going to kill me?”

Nikolas's eyes flicked back to meet mine before returning to the road as he stopped at an intersection. Ryan turned again in his seat to look at me. He glanced at me, glanced at Nikolas, then returned his gaze to me. After Nikolas came to a complete stop, he turned in his seat as well and looked me directly in the eye. “You're safe with us.”

For some reason, I believed him. I've always had a knack for knowing when I was being lied to or when a person couldn't be trusted, and I didn't get that feeling from him. He was telling the truth.

“Go to sleep, Danni,” he whispered with a soft smile. “Regain your strength. We'll wake you up when we get there.”

I gave him the barest of nods before closing my eyes and drifting back to sleep.

*

I was awakened by someone moving me. Strong arms had rolled me onto my back and were now positioning themselves underneath me, picking me up. I opened my eyes to find myself cradled in Nikolas's arms. We watched as Ryan got Miyavi out of the back seat. She was out like a light, which made me smile.

He turned from the car, and I saw where we were. The building in front of us rose high and stood wide, looking similar to a factory. The cement was whitewashed and plain, sure not to attract the eye while driving past.

He walked up to the front and carefully entered the foyer. How he managed to open the door for both himself and Ryan while keeping me comfortable in his arms, I don't think I even want to know, but he did. We got in the foyer and he carefully placed my on my feet, making sure I had the strength to stand. Ryan gently woke up Miv and set her on her feet as well. We both looked at each other in silence, subconsciously moving closer together.

The foyer was… plain. It was just basic white walls and white tile in a large rectangle. In front of us to the left was a hallway that just looked like it went straight down the side of the building. A metal detector was at the beginning of the foyer, giving off an odd vibe. On the other end of the hallway was a white door.

“Miv, we're going to ask you to go first,” Nikolas told her. “Please, don't freak out in case something happens. Just stay still and wait for Ryan to come find you, ok?”

We looked at each other and shook our heads. “We're not splitting up,” she told him. “Something funky happened to Danni last night and you're not telling either of us what happened. Instead, we both wake up in some God forsaken place with you telling me I have to go on alone. I'm not leaving her.”

Nikolas and Ryan looked at each other, not sure what to do. After a few seconds, Ryan shook his head, and I knew what they were doing.

“If you're going to have a conversation, do so that we can all hear what's going on,” I snapped. “We're not going to go without knowing what's going to happen.”

Miv looked at me completely confused, but I just shook my head. “I'll tell you later.”

She nodded and joined my piercing gaze directed at the guys, hoping they would back down.

“I want to know what's through that hallway before I go through it,” I demanded. “What's going to happen when we walk through that metal detector thing?”

“We'll explain it to you-”

“No!” I snapped. “I'm sick of hearing that. You don't have to tell us everything, but explain what will happen when we walk through that door!”

“Fine,” Nikolas snapped back. His eyes were flaring and his face was set - it was obvious that I had ticked him off. “That `metal detector,' as you call it, is a device that will show a person's true form when they walk through it. When Ryan and I walk through, we will be forced into our wolf form. When Miyavi walks through, nothing will happen to here. Because she's a normal human, it will transport her to another room.”

“Why?” Miv asked after a couple beats of silence.

“To protect our race,” Ryan answered, just as short as Nikolas. “We can't just let anyone walk through and go wherever they please.”

We just stood there, looking at each other.

“Is there a way that we can bring her with us?” I asked softly, not wanting to be separated.

“Wait a minute,” Miv interrupted. “What's going to happen to Danni? I mean, it's not like she's going to turn into a wolf.”

It was obvious that she thought the guys were doped up on something.

“Miv,” I murmured, “that's what happened to me that they wouldn't tell you about.”

She froze, just staring at me in disbelief.

“Remember those screams you heard last night?” Ryan added. “And you couldn't move anywhere?”

She turned to him with the same look of shock that she had given me.
“Miyavi,” Nikolas stated, drawing her attention to him. He looked her squarely in the eyes, keeping her gaze on him. “Just walk down the hallway, through the door, and we'll meet you there shortly.”

She just barely nodded at him before walking to the opening. Her movements were slow and lethargic, almost as if she were in a trance. She paused before the metal detector.

“Just go!” he snapped with a ferociousness that I never thought he was capable of.

She walked through and continued down the hallway. Nikolas and Ryan both stared after her in complete shock. Seeing their faces, I moved to where I could see her and held back a scream.

Just behind her walked a large black wolf. I stared at it before realizing there was something off, something that normal wolves don't have. The light shimmered on the beast for a second before I realized that it was just the tiniest bit transparent.

“Nikolas,” Ryan whispered, “she's supposed to have disappeared.”

It was at this point that I realized how little I knew of the two guys in front of me. I had thought them as passive, carefree guys who never really let anything get to them. I was proved wrong. Nikolas starred at Miv for a second before he just snapped.

“Damnit!” he yelled, turning to me and effectively scaring the shit out of me. “Why couldn't you just be a normal wolf?! Where all I have to do is bite, watch you turn, insert the chip, and then never see you again?”

I couldn't even say anything before a scream erupted down the hall. Our heads snapped toward Miyavi, who was crawling backwards away from the wolf following her. There was no change in the animal - it was still passively following her, but she was too shocked at the wolf in general to pay attention to that fact.

“What happened?” Ryan snapped at the other man.

“I lost control,” was his reply.

Immediately, the door at the other end opened and let through two other wolves, one red and brown and the other gray. Miv lost it. Three wolves, one not even completely solid, surrounded her. She was not a dog person.

The two guys sprinted after her, immediately shifting into wolves as soon as they hit the metal detector. I was frozen in shock, and Miv's screams only increased. Now there was a brown wolf and a white wolf added into the mix. The two groups met in the middle of the hallway around Miyavi. They stood there for a few moments, the black shimmering wolf standing in front of her as she huddled against the wall. After a second, the wolf's snout curled back to reveal a jaw of sharp, bared fangs as it growled at the other four wolves. The smaller gray wolf snapped at it, prompting the black one to lunge at the other, its jaws closing around the smaller one's throat. Blood spurted over the ground and the remaining three wolves hurriedly stepped back. The small gray wolf fell limp to the ground, quickly becoming surrounded by a pool of blood that trickled from its neck.

I managed to tear my eyes away from the horror that surrounded me to meet Miyavi's gaze. She immediately leapt up and sprinted down the hall toward me. She slipped a little on the blood, but quickly caught herself and shot down the hallway. I found myself walking toward her, through the metal detector. As I walked through, an odd change washed over me. I stopped and stood there, looking down at myself. There was nothing different about what I saw, but I felt different. I looked back up to Miv only to see her freeze in the hallway, looking behind me.

I turned and saw two huge white wolves behind me on either side, staring down at the other wolves in the hallway. They both looked up at me, and I screamed, every muscle in my body freezing in absolute fear.

I felt the other wolves running toward me, felt the confusion and frustration in three of them, the calm acceptance of the other one. The black one met with the two white ones, and they laid on their backs in a line, feet in the air, as they looked at me.

Shit. Nikolas, why do you always have to be the one to find them? I heard Ryan ask in my head.

You think I do it on purpose?! was Nikolas's response.

And the next thing that happened was something that I was growing tired of. I mean, seriously. In all these stories, the woman is supposed to be strong and able, but freaks and faints when something goes wrong. And I'm not a fragile woman, period. I mean, I survived a freaking wolf bite on my leg-

And the memories hit me then, crashing into me with more force than a tidal wave. I remembered. I remembered where I knew Ryan. I remembered why I was afraid. I remembered why I was in pain. I remembered the white wolf that followed me. I remember Ryan showing up unexpected. I remember the wolf biting me.

And then it happened; the one thing that shouldn't have happened. You know what I did?

I fainted.

Great.
