Breathe No More
There she lay. Beaten. Bloodied. Broken. She would rise no more. She was gasping for breath now. Holding on only for her children.
Her children. They had watched as she was slowly killed. Standing there near the dumpster in the dark deadly alley. She now heard them crying. They had been silent while he was here.
Footsteps. She cringed. Was he back? Could he hear her breath? They came closer. She could hear her children gasp. They came closer, steady yet nearly silent on the dirty ground. She wanted to cry, make some sound when he turned her head from the ground to face him. Gently she noticed. He was gentle. Large hands cradled her limp head, pain shooting throughout her body. He had said something. She could not hear much now. It was fading. She tried to open her eyes. Only one would answer it's owners command. Gazing through her once beautiful bright silvery eye she could see the man.
He was a giant. Large, yet she just knew he was graceful. Dark violet coloured eyes stared back at her. She felt a thumb stroke her cheek. He was young. Younger than her. He was kind, she knew it. She could see it. He would be the one she decided.
A wave of pain swept through her. Limbs started to go numb. Oh God how she just wanted to lie down. Just for a short time. Yes, she'd get back up after she rested. No. She would hold on for them. Her children, yes her children. That's right. She called to them. Calling them closer, they would not disobey her. They came. Her little Elizabeth and Alice. Her daughters. She heard them talking. Whispers in her head. She was fading again. Not yet she told herself. Hold on for a short time she thought.
She felt small fingers hold her hand and another stroke her face. Tears. They were crying. They should never have to cry again. It was her fault they were here. All her. She closed her eye, and opened it again. Her black haired angel still held her up for her daughters. They were talking. He was frowning, she saw. What little moonlight came into the alley lit up the one drop of liquid that raced down his cheek. He was kind. He would do. He cared, she knew. Again her eyes closed. Nearly eternally this time but a whimper brought her back again. She had to do it. She had to gather all her reserve to tell him. Tell him-just one moment. Just to rest. No. She could rest later. She closed and opened her eye again. She spoke.
“Save them. Take them. I leave them with you,” she had to stop and dig deeper. She wasn't done, no she had to finish, “Forever. For always. Love them. Teach them.” Then she let her limp head fall to see her daughter's teary eyes. She tried to smile, though not sure if it showed. “I love you. Stay together and grow up. Love and be loved, my daughters.”
There. She was done. She sighed. She could leave now. She closed her eye and felt someone hold her head in a hug. They were crying more now. She knew. No. She wasn't done. She opened her eyes once more, for the final time. She looked into his eyes and saw him take a deep breath then slowly nod. There. Now she was.
