Ralof and Deyuuthal looked back at the rubble behind them.
Ralof shook his head and rubbed the back of his neck, “Guess the other’s will have to find a new way out.”
Turning back to the cave behind them, they headed down a small flight of steps that gave way to a natural cave floor. Their boots splashed along in a creek that ran down the tunnel. Random torches lit their path, casting weary shadow on the walls and glistening off of the wet ground.
The path ahead was blocked, collapsed stone barring their way.
Ralof’s shoulders slumped, “How do we get pass this!”
“Um… Ralof?”
Ralof turned to Deyuuthal and saw him standing next to a side tunnel off to the right.
“Oh… right.”
Ralof strode passed Deyuuthal with his cheeks red from embarrassment. Deyuuthal did well to hide his amused grin in the gloom.
They walked on in silence, wary for Imperials within the tunnels. Deyuuthal began to feel the wind swirl, faintly at first but gradually getting stronger. They were nearing an exit.
Deyuuthal noticed Ralof had stopped ahead of him and was examining the ground. Looking over the Nord’s shoulder, he starred down at a large cobweb.
Shrugging, Deyuuthal moved forward but was immediately stopped by Ralof’s hand, “Hold Elf!’
Deyuuthal looked at him quizzically, “Um… it’s just a web. There must be many spiders down in tunnels like this.”
Ralof stood up, “Aye, but this isn’t an ordinary spider. This is of a frostbite spider, large tarantulas whose bites are packed with powerful poisons. Their spit is even worse.”
“Noted.”
In truth, Deyuuthal hated spiders. During his schooling, his potions teacher had tried to spur a love for spiders in him. It failed miserably.
As they moved on, the webs grew thicker and thicker. Ralof began to chop a few down as they continued on.
Cutting down one last web, the duo entered a chamber filled with webs. The entire walls were covered in them. Ralof walked into the center and looked around, checking for spiders.
“It seems clear to me. Coming Elf?”
Deyuuthal nodded and started to walk toward Ralof but suddenly stopped. He heard something, something moving around. He slowly crouched, turning softly to look at every corner and every shadow.
Out of the dark sprang a Khajiit, a feline man from the desert lands. It had dark brown fur with a grey stripe that curved from between his eyes down his back. He was dressed in Imperial leather armor. He flew at the Elf with two daggers, one stabbing for his stomach and one slashing across for his throat.
Deyuuthal brought his hands up and shot flames at the cat. It dove to the side, barely escaping the attack. It rolled up to its feet and hissed at Deyuuthal, ready to spring forward. Ralof jumped to Deyuuthal’s side, pulling out his hatchet.
The Khajiit paused, looking between the Nord and the Elf. These two together, even though weary, would be more than enough force to drive him back. Not only that, but their garments showed them as prisoners, not Imperials.
Hissing one more time, the Khajiit slowly slipped back and disappeared into a side tunnel.
Ralof stood up, “What in Oblivion was that?”
“No idea.”
“Well, we best follow him. He most likely knows the way out of these tunnels!”
They tore down the side tunnel after the Khajiit, trying to catch up with it. Coming around the corner, they slid down a small hill and landed 50 feet from a sleeping cave bear. On the other side, the Khajiit was picking his way along the stones, moving soundlessly toward what appeared to be an exit.
“Damn…” Ralof sighed, “looks like we have two options. We can try and sneak around at that path over there,” he pointed to the far left of the room, the same path as the Khajiit, “or I have a bow and a few arrows if you want to see if you can get the jump on the bear. I’d really not like to deal with her right now.”
Deyuuthal sized up the bear and then the path. He really did not want to harm the bear, but he was afraid of the lack of stealth this Nord may possess. Could all of that clanking armor sneak past the bear?
Sighing, the Elf turned to Ralof, “We’ll sneak past it, but follow MY lead.”
Ralof nodded and followed Deyuuthal to the left side of the room. They pressed close to the wall, slowly making their way around the bear. Ralof’s foot caught on a broken stone and he stumbled, dropping his hatchet with a loud clang. Deyuuthal crouched down and gritted his teeth. He looked back to find the bear undisturbed.
Deyuuthal turned to Ralof and pressed a finger to his lips. Ralof fixed him with a stare and then continued on. After getting far away from the bear, they stood and ran to the end of the tunnel. Sun poured in from the exit.
Ralof headed out of the tunnel, “this must be the way out!’
Deyuuthal headed after him, covering his eyes as the blaring sunlight consumed the dim torchlight.
“Get down!”
Roaring echoed overhead as the dragon swooped overhead. Deyuuthal ducked down low to the ground and watched the dragon curl toward the mountains and disappeared behind them.
Ralof slowly stood, “Guess that dragon’s gone for good this time.”
He turned to Deyuuthal and clasped him on the back.
“Thank you my friend, I wouldn’t have made it out of there alive without you.”
Ralof and Deyuuthal looked back at the rubble behind them.
