as soon as this happened all the kids wanted to know what was the matter and tried to comfort knailune and
told her that mabey she would feel better if she tried playing with the ball with them but try as they might,
knailune was inconsolable holding her face so tightly with her claws that the wiser of the children were
afraid she was going to poke her eyes out at this rate. this made some of the children start crying them
selves, and the rest got so bothered that one of them were told to go back to the village and bring back
someone bigger.a woman eventually came holding the hand of the boy who had gone to get her-she was happened to
be a wet nurse as well - who then tried to console knailune, but out of everything she tried to do,she was
only able to derive one thing from knailune, nothing more, and it was this. knailune didnt know what was
wrong.
-y lif-.
things for them became progressively worsened after this went on for a while. the sun was hidden by clouds and
some of the kids-who were key to the other kids fun,if they knew it or not- were too upset to do anything but
a nap anymore, letting themselves be led away by the older caretaker back to town. the ones who stayed
mumbled apologies at whatever had made knailune unhappy and promises that they would have fun again, and soon
they were gone too. it wasnt until zan who had stoically stayed next to knailune when the others said she
should just go home before she got upset and made knailune more upsey. and even though her lips wobbled, zan
pretended the whole time until knailune got up that she wasnt feeling upset also. knailune didnt get up and
leave with zan until everyone else had left though, and walked back home with zans hand in hers.
the older woman didnt quite remember alot of what happened to zan after this-she was rubbing her reddened eyes
alot mostly- she knew that zan had spotted her parents after a while of following her around and had said
goodbye uneasily leaving knailunes side.but her mind was not on this. she noticed after a while that her
breath had become ragged, ragged because she recalled vaguely that she had been running all over town. from
their familys balcony, to one or two of the silk mills, to her parents room(the door to their chambers were
closed. knailune didnt want to bother them if they were there) briefly heard from a servant that shisen might
be at the silk mill or one of the merging temples, didnt find her at either, almost crashed into quite a few
obstacles and people, tried his hang-out places and others she had sworn she would never tell anyone if he
told her,and had loony ideas of trying at all the border walls but found herself sitting against a wall,
covered in a cold sweat.
she didnt understand herself why of all places in the end she decided to visit the shrines where the old
people there with their stories always bored knailune to no end..yet after looking through each of
these..there her brother was, on his hands and knees before a large shrine.
as she stood there, wide eyed clutching each side of the shrine entrance, her chest heeaving as she stared
exaustedly at her brother, he didnt seem to take much notice, any at that of knailunes presence or because she
was blocking the sun light. ''what is it.'' he said simply without looking up. a chill wind even though it
wasnt cold seemed to blow by knailune..her brother looked dressed for war. his traditional garb was missing.
in its place was thick black padded armor, chest arms legs feet and hands..even his headband was of the
armor-type.all black. and what may have been unprotected looked painted black, though knailune couldnt tell
very well with her shadows blocking the only light in the small hut aside from candles surrounding her brother
near the beautiful shrine.
her brain couldnt seem to work. why was he dressed like this?..the look in his eyes..and his voice when he
spoke sounded completley different. deep. hollow.
knailunes knees began to fail to support her any more.
'' -why- '' was all knailune could get out.
she was beginning to crumple in the doorway, or felt like it. suddenly she was in her brothers powerful hug.a
strange curiousness at why she wasnt falling anymore replaced her failing strength and she didnt know how
long they were like that. and as suddenly, he was looking into her eyes. his were painted. black, almost wide
and very frightening.but very powerful. Father. '' everything’s fine. youl be okay. go back home.'' he said
once more in the voice that didnt sound like his. then he was sitting across from her on his knees.
Unblinking, watching her. knailune didn’t know how she was still standing. She felt very tired suddenly.
''..okay....stay safe brother..'' she said, smiling
at him faintly. ''..ill be okay.'' he said in that strange voice. and knailune picked herself up..and left
.
alone once more..orgul faced the shrine once more. and bowed down low before the deity of his ancestors,
surrounded by the deitys of his villages ancestors, and gods.''....oh those who were here before me..watch
over me and my family...orgul prayed as he had for a long time now..begging for forgiveness...
