"What!?" Keith immediately began to choke on his food. It took him a few seconds before he could speak again. "He's staying here!? Who is he? Why is he staying here? Are you pregnant? Why didn't you tell me about him? What does he have that I doesn't? Is he huge?"
Mia rolled her eyes. "Since when do I have to tell you about my life?"
"When you started screwing a guy! That's...that's...that's just not you!" His eyes narrowed. "Are you an alien?" Reaching out he groped her chest. "No, you still feel like you."
She slapped him hard across his face. "I told you not to do that!" she yelled. Calming herself she started eating. "We didn't sleep together. It's complicated."
He rubbed his cheek, but by now he was accustomed to getting slapped by her. "Complicated? Last night you said you were trying to score. This morning he's living with you. Complicated is an understatement."
"I only told you that so you would leave me alone," she said shrugging. "Do you really think I would just sleep with some random guy?"
"No," he admitted. "But I didn't think that you'd let some random guy stay with you either. What did your parents say about this?"
She looked away. "They don't know," she said lowly. "He and I...we share a bond. It's complicated but we have to stay together."
Once more he looked at her as if she was crazy. "Are you crazy? Better yet, are you pregnant? Cause none of this is making any sense," he told her. "Three days ago,, you only had a hand full of friends. You refused to come to parties, because you didn't want to be corrupted. Now you have some random stranger living with you."
"Don't make me sound like some goody-goody. I'm still a virgin, Keith. But," she glanced at the bathroom door, hearing the water shut off, "we are connected..." She looked back at him. "I wish I could explain it to you."
Keith frowned as he looked over at the bathroom. "I bet he's huge," he muttered sourly beneath his breath.
Neron already knew that someone else was there. He'd felt her wide range of emotions while in the shower and heard most of their conversation. After getting dried off and dressed, he took a few minutes to compose himself before walking out.
Keith's jaw dropped as he saw him. "He's hot! Damn it! Why couldn't he have been ugly? He's not nearly as ugly as my frail self esteem needs him to be."
Neron looked at Mia with a confused expression. "Hello," he said with a nod. "I'm Neron, you must be one of Mia's friends."
"One of her 'good' friends," Keith said quickly. "So don't try any funny business with her." He stood and poked Nero in the chest, wincing as he pulled back his injured finger. This guy's chest was like steel. "The name's Keith. Neron...that's a stupid name," he chuckled. "Look's like you got the short end on the name department." Looking down he saw the long gash on Neron's arm. "Wow, are you emo?"
"Emo?" Once more Neron looked at Mia for help, not understanding what this kid was trying to say.
Mia smacked Keith in the back of the head. "Back off or go home!" she warned. Grabbing Neron's plate, she handed it to him and smiled. "Something new." Looking at Keith, she gave him a death glare. "I like his name."
Keith rubbed the back of his head while Neron took his plate and leaned against the wall. Tasting the food, he smiled at the taste. "Wonderful," he smiled at her.
Keith glared daggers at him before looking at her. "Bacon is new to him?" His eyes narrowed. "And Neron is a stupid name! Who names their kid Neron? It sounds like something you'd hear on an alien movie."
Again, she hit him in the back of the head. "He was a vegetarian. Newly converted."
Neron looked up at her. Vegetarian?
Keith rubbed the back of his head once more. "Stop that! You're going to give me a concussion at the rate you're going."
"Then stop being a jerk! Just because I have some other guy in my life besides you doesn't mean you can go physco. It's not like he dampened your chances at getting in my pants, not that I would ever let you," she said as she started to eat again. "Why aren't you at the beach with your rich friends?"
He pouted. "Because I was hoping to get in your pants," he muttered.
Neron quirked an eyebrow at this. "Why would you want in her pants? You couldn't wear them."
Keith dropped his fork as he looked at Neron. "Are you for real? You've got to be joking...."
Lyra blushed brightly. "He means...he wants to have sex with me."
Neron looked at Keith and then to Mia. He frowned, not knowing why exactly that this news upset him. "I see," he said slowly, going back to eat his food. "What a crude way of saying that."
"Uh...it's the way most people say," Keith said. He looked at Mia and spun his finger around his head, showing her that he thought he was crazy.
Mia grabbed his finger. "I will break it off," she warned and let him go. Looking at Neron she softened. "I told you...men these days don't know what being a gentleman is like." She pointed to Keith. "Best example ever. He would have sex with me and never speak to me again."
"Men these days? You make it sound like he's from a different time," Keith laughed, quickly sobering up as he caught her insult. "And I would too call you! I wouldn't just screw you then ditch you. You're my friend. I'd wait a few months then gently let you go so we could still be friends."
Neron glared at Keith as he said this. "Someone like Mia should be handled with care and respect. She deserves someone who will love her, not simply lust after what she can offer."
Keith smirked and shook his head. "Well, Mia...I can definitely say the new guy is one of a kind. Though I'm not certain that's a good thing."
Mia blushed again as she looked at Neron. That was the most romantic thing she had ever heard. No one ever defended her honor like that before. Her chest felt warm...maybe from his anger? Or from her own fluttering heart as she stared at him. "Neron..." she whispered in near shock of his words.
Keith groaned as he saw that lovey dovey expression on her face. "I'm outta here," he said as he set the plate down. "I'll catch ya later, Mia. Me and you gotta have a talk..." Looking at Neron he nodded. "Looks like I'll be seeing you around too. Monday we're doing a movie night. I'll bring the pizza, you get the movie." With a small wave he stormed out, not wanting to be a part of whatever happened next.
Neron watched him leave, his face a perpetual scowl until he was gone. Once he left, however, he seemed to relax. It was only then that he noticed the way that Mia was looking at him, as well as the warm sensation in his chest. "Men today certainly are not what they should be...."
Mia looked away. "Maybe that Goddess that won felt men were weak the way they were..."
Neron huffed at that. "There's nothing weak about treating a woman with respect."
Mia put hers and Keith plate in the sink and began to wash them. "Maybe your God will do better when we win."
He smirked at this. "If he doesn't destroy the earth and start anew." Once he finished with his plate he walked over to her and set his plate in the sink as well. "But that is a long ways away. There are numerous warriors, and to beat all of them I will need my full power and an army...." He shook his head and laughed. His hand reached out to touch her but he let it quickly fall to his side. "At the very least I will need to regain my full power."
Turning to face him she looked at him sadly. "What will you do if he does destroy the world? You will have fault for nothing. That family you want...it will only be a faint wish."
He smiled and shrugged. "It is not my place to judge his will. If that is what he wishes, than all I can do is accept it and be washed away with all the rest."
Her hands fisted. "I do not like the idea of working for someone who only wishes for death."
"I did not say that he only wishes for death. As I said, I do not know his will. I just know that it is a possibility."
Turning from him, she looked out the kitchen window. "I feel like I'm in over my head. No...I know I'm in over my head."
He took a deep breath, trying to sound cheerful. "Do not worry. With luck, I will perish quickly and you can return to your mortal existence and act as if none of this ever happened."
At the thought of that, her eyes widened and her heart suddenly felt like a million needles had just stabbed it. Turning to him with water in her eyes she looked at him in disbelief. "You have such little faith in us! We will never win if you wish for you own death!"
"I did not say that I wished for my death." Why did his heart hurt? Did his words really affect her so? "I did, however, say that hopefully my death will be swift so that it will not ill convenience you anymore than it already has. A normal battle could take centuries to play out. In that time you will not grow old. You will watch those you care about wither away and die." His hands balled into fists. "You have no idea what kind of hell that is."
"But I said I'm willing to go all the way with you until the very end and let you win and yet you say that you want to just give up and let me be normal again? I will never be normal again after this. My heart will always feel the emptiness of our bond after you leave. I will never find a replacement for it," she said turning from him as her tears broke free. "I don't want this to end so soon. And I don't want you talking as if it's best if it does."
Why did it continue to hurt as it did? He reached out and put a hand on her shoulder. "Please," he said softly, trying hard to keep her emotions separate from his own. "I wish to win. More than you could possibly know. I just did not wish for your life to be torn asunder in the process."
"Maybe later on I'll wish that this would all end...maybe after everything sets in that I'm stuck in this....or maybe when I watch my little brother die of old age before me I'll wish that I had never started this," she whispered and slowly wiped her eyes as she looked out the window. "But at this very moment, the bond we share is something I'm not willing to give up so easily. My whole life has been normal and unchanged. But then I found you and this whole new world opened up to me. Yes, I'm risking my life, but you have no idea what it's like for me to go from feeling normal to feeling this bond. It's like I've suddenly became something important, someone actually needs me, and," she placed her hand over her heart, "we share so much already. All my life I've prayed to have this kind of bond with someone and here you are....even if I die, even if I watch everyone I love grow old, I'm willing to risk it all just so this feeling can last a little longer.
"Maybe I'm being foolish and selfish, but I'm young and most people would kill to have what I now have. And because of that...I'll fight for it. Until there is nothing left of me to fight."
Mia rolled her eyes. "Since when do I have to tell you about my life?"
"When you started screwing a guy! That's...that's...that's just not you!" His eyes narrowed. "Are you an alien?" Reaching out he groped her chest. "No, you still feel like you."
