Elyssa smiled as she looked up at them. She couldn't feel him, but she could control him. "Neron, stand and protect me, no talking or eye contact with them," she ordered.
Neron closed his eyes as his body did what she said. He moved between her and Mia, his chest throbbing with the symbol which was burned into it.
Keith's eyes looked at the symbol on Neron's chest and then to the symbol on Elyssa's naked chest. He shuddered. Now was not the time for dirty thoughts. "You used the seal of Orichalcos. You bitch," Keith said, shaking his head. "You tried to reestablish your bond."
Elyssa stood behind him and smiled, her hands trailing over his body, grabbing at his sensitive spots just to tease Mia. "Yes, and now he is all mine," she said.
Mia slowly lowered her gun. "Neron..." she whispered. "Is my bond lost to him?" she asked Keith.
"You felt him to get us here didn't you?"
Mia nodded. "We are still connected. His heart is still my heart. And that bond is much stronger than a command," she said to Elyssa. "Neron...you don't have to listen to her. Think of all the freedom I gave you." She placed her hand over her heart. "Think of all the things we feel. All the love and devotion. Think of our first kiss and the first time I said I loved you. You can beat this because you are part of me and you know I never give up so easily."
Neron shuddered, trying to fight against her commands. "Neron, kill them," she whispered.
Neron's eyes shot open as the blades popped from his flesh in a river of blood. He started toward them, making three steps before stopping. Every fiber of his being told him not to, and yet her words echoed in his head, drowning out everything else. With two quick motions Keith's and Mia's guns lay in pieces on the floor. He raised his hand to strike Mia down, but his arm froze.
"Do it!" Elyssa yelled. "Kill her! Kill her!"
Neron's arm shook. He looked at Mia, a feral growl escaping his lips as he turned, his blade slicing through the air. He stopped, his eyes hazy and his breathing heavy as he stared at Elyssa. Her eyes were wide with shock as she stared at him.
"Why...?" A thin line appeared on her neck, followed by a gush of blood. She grabbed at it, but there was nothing she could do to stop the bleeding. "My...love," she stared up at him, her eyes hazing over as her life ebbed away.
Mia moved her arms around Neron from behind and Sophitia watched as Zeus cursed in rage. He began to fade and Sophitia waved to him. He gave her a looked of pure evil and anger before he was finally gone. Sophitia turned to Keith. "This is so not good. With Zeus dead, the Gods will finalize their plans."
Keith shook his head. "Maybe this works in our favor. The only way you're suppose to be able to interact with the gods is when you perish or win. Zeus is now among the fallen warriors. He had no intention of going through this again." He smirked as he looked at Sophitia. "I'm expecting that he's about to cause an uprising."
Neron didn't move as he stared down at Elyssa's body. He was shaking though he couldn't fathom why. His arms hurt, and he didn't want to pull back in the blades and make them hurts worse. "I'm sorry," he whispered, both to Mia and to Elyssa.
Mia walked pass Elyssa's body and grabbed Neron's clothes. "Put your blades back in and get dressed. We have to get out of here," she said. "I don't want Sophitia using her fire...it might hurt her."
He took his clothes and nodded. Putting them on, he dressed quickly, hissing only when he shirt slid over his sleeves and the branded flesh. Taking a deep breath, he forced the blades back into his arms as he nodded for them to go. He didn't want to think right now. He just wanted to move.
Mia grabbed the sheets off the bed as they headed out. When they got in the car, she tore the sheets into strips and started wrapping his arms. She didn't say anything. She knew he didn't want to hear anything. She could feel his pain...mostly from his heart. He was hurting more than she could feel.
Sophitia drove while looking at the sky. All she could think about was that the end was coming soon. The Gods would make their move soon and she wouldn't have warning.
As soon as they returned home Keith went to the kitchen and popped the cork on a wine. "I suggest a toast! The bitch is dead and we killed the president!"
Neron didn't look up at him as he walked to the back room. He stared for their bedroom, shutting the door behind him as he collapsed on the bed. He didn't want to do anything. He simply wanted to cease existing. Was that really so much to ask?
Mia started to follow him, but stopped. She instead sat at the bar. Sophitia sat by the window as if expecting something to happen. Mia looked up and Keith as he drank the wine. No one said anything for a long time. Mia said nothing because she didn't know what to say and Sophitia didn't say anything because she didn't have anything to say. Keith said nothing because no one spoke.
Keith spoke first, not wanting to drink in silence. "Well, if this is game over. It's been one hell of a ride. Don't make me drink alone. Grab yourselves some glasses."
"I don't drink," Mia said as she laid her head down on the bar.
Sophitia shook her head. "I'm good. Right now...I just want to watch for signs."
"I'll take a drink," Neron said as he walked into the room.
Keith nodded and poured him a glass, passing it to him. Neron took it and downed it in one gulp. "By killing Zeus I have probably sealed our fate. I did not-" He shook his head and pushed his glass toward Keith for a refill. "I did not mean for that to happen."
"No one is blaming you, Neron. We all knew it had to end at some point," Sophitia said. "Sit down. I need to stitch your arms up," she added and grabbed out the first aid kit.
He looked down at is arms which had already bled through his bandages. He nodded and sat down by Mia so that she could do what she needed to.
Sophitia worked on him in silence while Mia rubbed her arms, feeling the needle go in and out of Neron. Mia watched Neron closely as if expecting something to suddenly happen and his body to start disappearing.
Neron watched as the needle slid through his skin. Sophitia had to keep dabbing at the blood so that she could see what she was doing. Looking over at Mia, he gave her a small smile. "The gods know that Zeus is gone. We haven't been taken yet, so there's no point in worrying over it."
Mia looked away and nodded. "I'm...going to take a shower," she said and headed to the bathroom connect to her room.
Sophitia finished Neron's right arm, then started on the left. "You shouldn't lie to her. Just because nothing has happened yet doesn't mean it won't. She should prepare herself for the worst."
Neron shook his head. "I've already caused her enough pain. There is no reason to hurt her further." He winced as she pressed the needle deeper.
"I won't worry so much about hurting her. If she was really hurt, do you think she would have come for you? Obviously she doesn't know what to say. You just killed someone she was led to believe you loved very much. She doesn't want you to feel obligated to her," Sophitia said. "You are driving me nuts with this anyways. If you want to be with her, you should let her know. Otherwise later one, if we disappear, she is going to regret not saying anything. You need to make the first move. After all, you are the one that left her, not the other way around."
Neron looked at her and sighed. "When did you become the expert on relationships? From what I remember you were always the screw them then dump them kind of person. You know, like Keith."
"Hey! I resent that!"
"Before I do anything with someone, I make it clear it's just a one night stand and nothing more. But I have lived a long time just like you and I picked up a few things along the way. I'm not stupid, Neron. It's not hard to put pieces together and figure out the puzzle," she said and finished his arm. She took off his shirt and rubbed some burn cream on his chest then wrapped his arms.
He nodded at this. "Fair enough," he told her. Standing he stretched, running his hand over the cream on his chest. "Thank you. I never really thought that I would be saying this to you of all people; but you are a good friend when you want to be." He smirked as he helped her with the left over bandages.
"Don't give me that mushy stuff. I don't do mushy," she said and grabbed the stuff from him and put it away.
"Yeah, I know. I still remember that time you delved in virgin sacrifices." He shook his head and walked down to Mia's room. Pushing the door open, he heard her still in the shower. Pushing open the bathroom door, he sat down and toyed with his wrists. "I'm sorry for going to her," he told her, figuring that he should start the conversation off.
Mia stiffened at the sound of his voice. She washed off the rest of the soap from her body and turned off the shower. She reached and grabbed the towel then wrapped it around her before pulling the curtain back to look at him. "How...far did you go with her?"
"We kissed, nothing more," he assured her.
She glared at him. "You were both naked," she snapped coldly. "I felt the heat. Don't lie to me."
"Yes, we were," he told her. "And other than her getting a good feel, kissing was all we did."
"I find that very hard to believe. Did she take your clothes off or did you? And were you in the bed with her?"
"I was in bed with her; and she took my clothes off of me." He didn't know if it was better to lie in this scenario or not. However, it technically wasn't a lie. For some reason even before the mark he felt compelled to follow her orders.
Mia glared at him. "You're a liar," she pointed out. Stepping out of the tub, she walked back to the room and started dressing.
"I'm not lying about how far we went. We kissed, that's it. I wouldn't let it go further."
"Were you lying about anything else? Because your pulse is going a million miles per hour," she said coldly as she brushed her hair out.
Right. Built in lie detector. Wonderful. "I took off my clothes on my own free will," he told her. "What more do you want me to say? She is dead, because I could not bring myself to hurt you. I did not sleep with her, because I could not do so knowing that I loved you."
Mia reached over and slapped him across the face. She cried out as her hand cracked. Holding her palm, she glared at him with anger, disappointment, and sadness. Tears washed over her. "Do you have any idea what it was like forcing myself to let you go, not once, but twice? Watching you walk away knowing that you are going to someone else's bed? The first time, I let you go because I thought I was doing the right thing for everyone and now...now I don't know what good came from it." She cradled her hand as she watched blood fall from the corner of his mouth. "You can't sit there and tell me that you took your clothes off, crawled in her bed, and intended on doing nothing but talk. If I had told you I stripped and crawled in Keith's bed and we just talked, you wouldn't believe me either."
Mia took a deep breath to control herself. "While you were gone, I sat in his bed, holding onto my best friend praying that you would come back and at the same time knowing that it will always be this way. You will always walk away. Even though you knew you were walking away from me...and I promised you my whole world!" She flexed her hand and winced then sat on the edge of the bed. "You didn't even care. You didn't care that I was here waiting...with my heart in hand while you were in her arms." She shook her head. "And the worse part is that I can't hate you because you killed her and I know that you are hurting over that."
"Yes, I am hurting over killing her. I loved her. I spent a century with her, I thought that she would be the one to set me free. I thought that she would be the one that I would spend the rest of my life with." He held out his hands so that she could see his bandaged wrists. "With these hands, I killed her. I have to live with the choice that I made. While I am hurting because I killed her, I do not regret my choice to save you."
Walking over to her, he knelt down in front of her, his tongue flicking over the blood from his lips. "However, I don't regret going to see her either. It was because I loved her that I went to speak with her. I needed to find out whether or not I could ever be with her again; because if there was a chance that I would go back to her, I would not be with you. I wouldn't want to break your heart later on down the road."
Mia looked away from him. "You didn't have to take your clothes off to find all that out...and you are a little late. My heart is already broken."
"No, I did not," he admitted softly. "I am sorry. That is all I can offer you, I'm afraid. That and the fact that I do love you, Mia. Despite everything I have done, I do love you."
She looked at him sitting on her knees in front of her. She knew he loved her, but it wasn't enough. Though, she also knew sorry wasn't enough. Nothing was ever going to be ok after this but if she wanted him...she would have to deal. "If you ever walk away from me again, I'm not giving you a third chance. I mean it, Neron...it's either me now and forever or never again."
Neron looked up at her and nodded. "Of course," he told her. "I will not stray. I promise."
She wiped the blood from his lips then wiped her eyes. She left her hand on his cheek, knowing she hurt him. "I think I really hurt my hand..." she said with a light laugh through her tears.
He smirked and placed his hand on top of hers. "I can't feel my cheek," he told her.
She laughed again and wiped her eyes once more. "I know. I wanted it to really hurt."
He nodded against her hand with a pitiful whimper. "It did. Trust me."
"Good," she said and pulled back. "Next time, I won't be so kind."
He rubbed his already swelling cheek. "I'll keep that in mind."
She glared at him. "You are suppose to say there won't be a next time."
His face softened and he nodded. "There won't be a next time," he told, getting up and sitting on the bed beside her.
She smiled. "Better not be."
Neron closed his eyes as his body did what she said. He moved between her and Mia, his chest throbbing with the symbol which was burned into it.
