Outlaw Star does not belong to me in any way shape or form...

This is a death fic and may be very depressing, so please be warned.

Melfina was jolted awake by the movement of the hand that she had fallen asleep upon. She lifted her head to look down into a pair of bright, beautiful, blues eyes sparkling with mischief.

"Do that to much and you'll get a cramp in your neck."

Melfina smiled away her tears at Gene's attempted humor. "A mild cramp is nothing to me as long as I can spend these few precious moments with you, Gene."

The once strong and viral man lifted a wrinkled hand to her face and smoothed the soft supple crease free face of Melfina.

"Aw Mel. Don't cry. I don't want..." Gene's body was suddenly racked with severe coughing causing him to sit up in the bed. Mel quickly poured him a glass of water and handed it to him; he eagerly drank the fluid down and cleared his throat.

"That's better. Thanks Mel. We should be going." Gene rose from the bed and cracked his back running his fingers through his white hair. Mel rose to her feet as well and the couple left their room and headed for the bridge of the Outlaw Star.

The ship was now void of a crew except for Melfina and Gene. Jim had been killed 40 years ago during a pirate fight. Sazuka had passed away naturally, old age gaining up on her before she knew it. Aisha had just died herself killed in a fight, going down as the proud warrior she had always been. In fact Gene and Mel had just come back from the Ctral, Ctral territory, where they had returned the beast-woman's dead corpse back to her family. And now, for the last few weeks Gene had come down with his own sickness that had taken a toll on his health causing Melfina to worry nonstop that soon too, he to would be gone. Because Melfina was a bio-android her aging had slowed, if in fact, she ever did really age. Her and Gene had become lovers shortly after the Leiline and their romance and love had not wavered in over the sixty years they had been together.

Mel took her place in the navigation tank and Gene plopped himself down into the pilot's seat telling Gillium to set a course for Sentinel Three. They had been traveling for a few hours when she noticed Gene slumping forward, his eyes heavy.

"If you wish to sleep a little Gene I can take over the Outlaw Star for awhile." Gene leaned his head back and smiled. "You do that babe. Wake me when we get there. By the way, Melfina, I love you. No matter what don't forget it okay?"

Melfina smiled "Oh Gene. I'll never forget. I love you more than anything in this universe." Mel heard his light snoring and hoped he had heard her words before he'd fallen asleep.

It was an hour later when Gillium announced that they were only 30 minutes away from their destination.

"Thank you Gillium. Gene. Gene. We're almost there. We're almost home." She began to grow panicked when he didn't answer her.

"Gillium, take over!" As soon as she was free of her tank she went directly to Gene. She placed a delicate hand over her mouth and tears formed in her eyes as her other hand smoothed over his face. His body was still, his eyes closed, his lips however was pursed in his trademark devilish grin, as if he had been having a wonderful dream.

"Oh Gene!' Melfina buried her face in his chest and began to sob. "No Gene!" Growing alarmed Gillium inquired of Mel what the problem was.

"He's gone Gillium. Gene is dead." Her voice was barely a whisper.

"I'm sorry Melfina."

"It was inevitable Gillium. I knew this time would come." She remembered Gene's words telling her not to cry.

"I won't cry Gene. I'll be strong...for you." She wiped away her tears and with a power she did not realize she possessed she lifted Gene up into her arms carrying his body to their room. She placed him into their bed and laid down herself, cradling his body next to hers.

"Gillium, you know what do." She heard the computers voice activate the self-destruct sequence. She closed her eyes and held onto Gene tightly.

"10, 9, 8..."

"I'm sorry Gene, but I cannot go on without you."

"7, 6..."

I was asked once if I had a soul. That, I still do not know. But I do have love Gene. I do know love. And it is you Gene. It has always been you. And love can conquer all obstacles right?"

"5, 4, 3..."

"And anyplace, as long as we are together, would be better then living this life without you. Because Gene I love..."

"2,1…"

The End
