Chapter 2: The beach

*******************

It was an hour before dawn, and the beach was deserted. The sky was still dark, and a cool breeze blew across the sand even as the waves from the ocean came and went. This is the scene that Lissa came upon once again as she prepared for her morning run.

`No matter how many times I see this, I still can't get over it's beauty.' she thought as she stretched.

Lissa had been living with the Kashiwagis at their beach house for a little over a fortnight, and she felt homesick for every day of it.

`At least it's getting better. I mean, everyday I feel a little less homesick, and even I have to admit, it's been an amazing summer.' Lissa thought back to the month of June, before she had come to Japan.

`I turned fifteen.' She remembered her surprise when she found out that she was going to have a party.

`That was wild. I still can't believe that Mom could organize not just a birthday party, but a triple birthday party, and none of us knew about it. I wonder how everyone's doing. I miss them.'

She finished stretching, and started to jog along the beach.

`I am so glad that this school I'm going to has a soccer team. I was a bit worried at first that it didn't.' She sighed. `I can't wait until school starts. I mean, these activities have been fun, and the Kashiwagis are really nice, but I am really lonely. I can't believe how many of my friends are going away this summer. I hope I'll be able to make friends. I should be able to, I mean, I'm not quite as shy as I used to be. And, hopefully, I'll be on the soccer team. Ah well, I'd better stop thinking, otherwise I might get lost.'

Lissa continued her run across the beach, varying her speed every now and then, completely oblivious to the pair of brown eyes watching her, as they did every morning.

Ryo watched as the girl finished stretching and finally began her run. He had been watching this girl for about two weeks, ever since that morning he'd woken up early and decided to take a walk along the beach. He'd seen her running, and had immediately fallen in love. Since that morning, he had come to the beach at sunrise everyday, trying to get up the nerve to talk to her, but he never did. He always just ended up watching. But today would be different.

`This is the day. Today I'm going to finally talk to her. I wonder what she's like. I can't believe I am so nervous, I mean, it's not like I've never talked to a girl before...hell, I'm me...but...this one's different. I can feel it.'

He looked at his watch. `About twenty-five minutes left' he thought as he waited. He was at the corner of the sidewalk, and there was a tall bush that blocked him from sight. He sighed, running his plan through his mind, and thinking about what he would say when he talked to her. When he had finally settled on a plan, he looked at his watch again. `Twenty-two minutes...oh this is going to be a long wait.'

Lissa was nearly finished her run. It was the last leg, and she always sprinted it.

`Only about fifty yards after this corner up here. Time to put on the real speed.'

She sped up and was running as fast as she could. It was still just after dawn, and usually no one showed up at the beach until after she'd left, so Lissa leaned forward slightly, streamlining herself and looking at the ground, and turned the corner.

All of a sudden, Lissa ran into something hard. She abruptly stopped, and fell on her butt a couple steps back. She looked up, and realized that she had run into someone, and that he had also fallen from the impact. She quickly got up and held out her hand to him.

"I'm so sorry," she said, "I wasn't watching where I was going. Are you okay?"

`Wow,' she thought, `he is really, really hot.' And he was. He accepted her hand, and stood up, and she realized that he towered over even her tall frame.

`I'd say he's at least 6'2".' He had shaggy black hair, pale, smooth skin, and `the most intense brown eyes I have ever seen.' She concluded. He was well muscled, `Probably lifts weights,' and was dressed in swim trunks and a T-shirt, his towel still on the ground. He looked to be about seventeen.

"It's okay," he said, "I'm fine."

`He's even got a sexy voice. Must not have any trouble at all getting the girls.' Lissa thought.

"Are you okay? You're bleeding." He said, looking concernedly at her arm. Lissa looked down and saw that there were huge, dirty scratches all down her forearm, and that most of them were bleeding.

"Oh, don't worry about me," she told him, "They're just scratches. I'm Lissa, by the way. Lissa Morgan."

"Okayasu, Ryo. Pleasure to meet you. Um, are you sure you're okay? Your arm looks like it could really use some cleaning."

"Oh, it's nothing, really. I'm staying at a house not too far away, and I was just on my way back. Thanks for your concern, and I'm really sorry about running into you, but I have to go now. So, I guess I'll see you around."

"Yeah." Lissa turned and started walking away.

"Hey, Lissa!" Ryo called.

"Uh, yeah?" she asked, turning around.

"Um, do you want to hang out later today? There's a new movie in the theater downtown, and I heard it's supposed to be really good.

Lissa looked to the side as she thought. `Is he asking me out? I hope not, I'm not ready for another boyfriend...not yet. But... it would be fun to have someone to talk to beside Mr. And Mrs. Kashiwagi. And he seems nice enough.I'll just go with him, and make sure he knows that I just want to be friends.' She turned back to Ryo.

"Sure...I'm staying at that house over there," she pointed to a blue house down the beach, "come by whenever, I'll be there all day." Ryo nodded.

"I'll see you later then."

"Yup...bye." Lissa turned once again, and continued uninterrupted to the Kashiwagis' beach house.

Ryo watched as Lissa walked away, so happy at his luck that he could hardly contain himself.

`She said yes! I just got a date with the girl of my dreams!'

"Lissa..." he said wistfully, "Lissa Morgan. Beautiful."

Ryo turned and ran back to his house and up to his room. He didn't care about the amount of noise he made. All he cared about was that he had a date with Lissa later that day. He looked at his clock, the time showed 6:51.

`Shoot. The movie theater doesn't open for another two hours. Ah well...it's worth the wait.'

He decided to take a shower to pass the time. When he finished, he wrapped his towel around his waist and went to go back to his room. He was blocked, however, at the door of the bathroom by his younger brother.

"What do you want Kiley?" he asked, impatient to get going. Kiley just looked at him like he was crazy.

"Did you just call me Kiley?" he asked.

"Yeah...what do you want? Hurry it up, I've got someplace to be." Ryo was not in the mood to put up with his brother. Especially since his brother was wasting time that could be spent with Lissa.

`Ah...the lovely Lissa. Lissa Morgan.' He just loved her name.

"Hello? Did you hear me?" Kiley snapped his finger in front of Ryo's face, bringing him out of his reverie.

"Huh?"

"I said, what in the world got Mr. Sleep-Till-Twelve-Or-Later-Every-Day-Of-Summer-Vacation not only out of bed, but so excited that he WOKE UP THE ENTIRE HOUSE AT 7:00 IN THE MORNING!" He asked, shouting the last part.

Ryo smiled. "The most lovely girl in the world," he said, pushing past his brother and going into his room.

"Of course...it would have to be yet another poor girl you have trapped in your net." He muttered to himself. "I feel sorry for her already."
