He’s waiting for me to find him, I know. I have to believe that. Sometimes that thought is all that keeps me going-the belief that he’s out there, smiling his inscrutable smile; him and his damned pet-shop.
I can remember my last sight of him. It’s frigging burned into my brain; that frozen moment in time when he bid me goodbye and shoved me out of the damned boat. Endlessly falling…
Through a curtain of shimmering black hair, his unmatched eyes glittered down at me as I fell. Damn, did I say unmatched? I meant mismatched! Yeah, that’s it!
Hell, maybe I don’t know what I mean anymore. It’s hard to say. Nothing’s been the same since he vanished. Him and his pet-shop of man-eating animals, sometimes that’s the only thing that makes sense anymore. His honey-sweet voice telling me, “Humans have not earned the right to board this ship. Not yet.” Maybe he was right, I keep thinking, maybe humanity does need a good swift kick where it will do the most good.
Maybe. I wish I knew.
