Part 5

D sat quietly sipping his tea and since business was slow, he was mainly left with his thoughts. He should not have been surprised that his thoughts wandered to Leon and his strange behavior. The afternoon sun cast a beautiful orange glow over the inside of the pet shop, but it did not draw any of D's attention. He could only think of how something had to be very wrong for Leon to be behaving this way. The Detective had his quirks but none of them would explain this away.

"Mulling over something important?" asked Sofu D.

"Not really," D replied. "I was just thinking about the Detective and how strange he had been acting. He also returned the cat I sold him a few weeks ago."

"He WHAT?!?!" exclaimed Sofu. D was surprised by the shocked reaction and it showed in his eyes. Then his look changed to one of concern. He turned away and replied, "I was just surprised that he would return the cat. What did he claim was wrong with it?"

D was relaxed by his grandfather's calmer tone, and resumed sipping his tea. "He claimed to be having weird dreams, but I think there was much more to it. I also think he was more than a little sleep deprived." He looked over to his grandfather and saw Sofu's gaze turn into an almost angry looking grimace.

"Are you sure you are not wasting too much time on the man?" he asked with a tone of contempt.

"Yes, I'm sure," D replied. "I was only thinking about him because of the strange claims he made about the cat. Besides, you are being overly protective. I can handle myself."

Sofu stared at D as if questioning whether he should argue that fact, but finally he seemed to have decided against it as he turned to walk away. "Speaking of the cat, where is it?"

"I would not know," D replied to his grandfather's retreating back. "It bit my finger and ran off, but I anticipate it will show up when it gets hungry enough." He saw his grandfather stop walking as he was speaking but he did not turn around to face him. Before he could ask about it, he had resumed walking and disappeared into the darkness of the pet shop's back hallway. With both his grandfather and Leon acting strange he wondered if it was just a coincidence or if there was something more going on. He guessed he would just have to wait for all to reveal itself.

"You said you would take care of him, I gave you orders and you as of yet have not completed them. If you continue to show me such insolence I will not hesitate to dispose of you. Do you understand?" The voice ordered angrily.

"Of course your Excellency," the second voice replied. "I have not forgotten your orders. The detective is under investigation for an attack on his former partner. Just give me a little more time and I will complete my mission."

"You had better," replied the angry and booming voice. "Or I will destroy you."

Across town, Leon went into the hospital. It was probably ridiculous think that he could get in to see Jill but he had to try. He was not sure if he was ready yet to face D. Maybe she would realize that she had made a mistake and this whole investigation would just go away. Then he sighed as he realized how silly that wishful thinking really was.

He walked towards Jill's room trying to be as inconspicuous as possible. The last thing he needed to do was attract attention. The door was open and he peeked in to see a police officer sitting in the chair nest to her bed. "Shit," he whispered to himself. He knew there was no way he was going to be able to talk to Jill with a cop sitting right there. It would be very wishful thinking to think the cop would not have been warned to watch out for him. He was officially fucked. He peeked back into the room one last time and then resigned himself to his fate. He was really going to have to talk to D.

The drive to Chinatown dragged on agonizingly slow, and as he was driving her could feel his eyelids getting heavy. He should not be sleepy; it was only ten in the morning. He put the window down and let the air hit his face, this woke him up a bit but he sped up so he could get to the pet shop before he fell asleep at the wheel. He had thought this strange sleepiness would go away when he got rid of the cat. He parked in front of the shop and sat in his car for a few minutes examining the busy street. He needed to go inside but something inside him was screaming to run, drive, or just get the hell out of there. This was stupid he was just nervous about facing D, he had nothing to be afraid of so he needed to just suck it up and get his ass in there. Just to give himself an extra sense of security he slipped his gun holster on and fastened it in place.

As he walked inside he saw D was setting the table for tea. "How do you always know when I'm coming," Leon asked.

"Why hello Detective, I guess it's just a hunch as you would call it," D replied with an almost flirtatious smile. Then he took a seat on the opposite sofa and waited for Leon to be seated as well. He saw that the tray had a wide assortment of cakes and cookies but no tea yet.

"Are you slipping Count?" Leon asked with a laugh. "There is no tea."

D smiled and replied. "I am simply waiting for the water to boil; have a bit more patience. So what brings you here to Detective?"

"I came to talk to you about my friend Jill," he replied with his tone turning serious. "She was attacked a little over a week ago."

"Is she all right?" D asked. "I am surprised you have not mentioned this earlier."

"She has been hospitalized," he replied quickly. "and I did try to ask you about it before."

"Ask me about?" D asked. "Why would you ask me about it?" Then he closed his eyes and sighed as the realization came to him. "Oh I see, you believe that I somehow had something to do with this huh?" Before he could say anything more he heard the teakettle whistle from the other room. "Excuse me," D said snidely and left the room in a huff.

Well, Leon had succeeded in pissing D off, but had not obtained any information. He needed to focus and smooth this over with D when he came back. He relaxed back into the couch and waited for D's return. Without realizing it, he fell asleep and slipped once again into his dream world.

The same swirling green sands and sky of purple greeted him as they had in his other nightmare. In the sky he saw the same golden eyes that he had seen before and soon it was accompanied by the booming voice. "You have not done as you were told, "the voice commanded him. You must kill D or you will suffer." Leon scanned the area around him and saw a creature coming at him from a distance. It was tall, probably about seven feet and had a set of feline ears on top of his head.

"Who are you?" Leon asked.

"I am Vale and I am ordering you to kill D," He replied. "If you do not do it, I will make you suffer."

"I will not kill D," he countered.

"Then you leave me no choice," Vale commented. "I will just have to destroy you instead. The distance between them closed within a matter of seconds and he felt a set of very sharp claws swipe at his face. His fighting instincts kicked in and he began to defend himself from the blows. That was all that he could really manage to do was defend himself because the hits were so fast that he had to concentrate fully on blocking.

As the fight progressed he felt more and more of the creature's blows connecting. His energy was drained and he had no idea what to do next. Then he saw an opening when the creature attempted to drop kick him. He quickly reached out his hands and wrapped them around his throat as hard as he could.

D returned with the tea and found Leon asleep on the sofa. He walked over and studied the Detective's features. It then became clear to him that Leon was in the middle of a nightmare, so he decided to wake him up. He reached his hand over and shook Leon's shoulder. "Wake up Detective," he whispered gently. In a split second Leon's hands shot out and wrapped around D's throat. "Leon!" he screamed. "What are you doing!?!?" Then he felt his air diminish and screaming was no longer an option. He tried to look into his eyes but found that they were still closed. Was it even possible that Leon was still asleep?

Sofu D came rushing into the room because he had heard his grandson's scream. The first thing he saw was Leon choking D. He lunged forward and with all of his strength pulled him off. The amount of force he used was so great that it caused Leon to fly into the wall behind him. The shock of the impact woke Leon from his nightmare, and his eyes shot wide open to glance furtively around the room. He saw D holding his throat and being held by a man he had never seen before that looked almost like D's twin. "What the hell is going on here?" he asked quickly. Then with a pointed glare at Sofu D he asked, "And who the hell are you?"

"You were choking me Detective," D wheezed out. He did not know what to say in response. Was it possible that he had been choking D in his nightmare? He looked down at the floor unable to meet D's eyes. Then out of the corner of his eyes he saw his cat, Shadow.

Within a second the room filled with a thick purple smoke. He heard D and the other man coughing and soon he was coughing as well. It took a few moments for the smoke to clear and when it did he saw the creature from his nightmares standing there in front of him. "You are such a pussy!" it shouted at Leon. "You should have just taken care of D like I took care of your partner." The creature, or Vale as he had called himself in the dreams turned away from him and looked at D. He then flew forward knocking the man away from D and wrapping his hands around D's throat just as Leon had moments earlier. "I'll finish what the Detective could not."

"You were supposed to kill that troublesome Detective, not my Grandson!" shouted Sofu D. Without hesitation Leon reached for his gun holster and unclipped the gun. He raised it quickly and aimed carefully for the creature's head, and then he fired. D pushed away the lifeless body and ran for his grandfather.

"What did you say about that thing killing me?" Leon asked. Then he walked over to the body and shot again. "I'm not taking any damn chances." Even as he saw, what was apparently D's grandfather, holding him; he could still see anger in the grandfather's face.

"I just should have known better than to send someone to do my job," he replied. "I should have just killed you myself you loathsome little worm." He extended his arm out and knocked the gun from Leon's grip. Before Leon could react a well-placed punch had landed him on the ground a few feet from his gun. He could see D's grandfather above him and closed his eyes and waited. After a few moments when nothing had happened he opened his eyes and saw D standing in front of him.

"He saved my life," D admonished. "I will not let you hurt him." Seeing that D was standing up for him he took the opportunity and ran from shop. He did not go to his car or even pay it notice. He just kept running as if a pack of wild dogs were nipping at his heels. After quite a few blocks he began to calm down and he hailed a cab to take him home.

After Leon had run off, Sofu D stormed off into the back of the shop. D sighed and collapsed with exhaustion onto the floor. The shop was completely wrecked and he had no idea where to begin in fixing it. That was not the only thing he had no idea how to fix. How could he fix this situation? His grandfather had attempted to kill Leon and now he would probably never see him again. That was another question, how did he feel about never seeing Leon again? He got to his feet and began to clean up the mess, hopefully that would keep his mind off Leon for now.

The next day Leon sat on his couch with his head buried in his hands. What the hell was he going to do? Well, to be honest he would probably just go to jail. The police would never believe the story he had to tell in his defense. He just closed his eyes and rubbed his temples willing away the migraine he could feel coming on. He would just have to wait and see how everything unfolded.
