Pilot Candidate Fan Fiction ❯ The Revolution ❯ The Opening Act ( Chapter 1 )
[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Disclaimer: I don't own anything, especially Miniaka's original characters. The scenario, however…that's a different story.
The setting:
Set after the battle where Ernest Coure was supposed to die. In this setting, however, Ernest survived, despite losing his left hand and the lower half of his right leg, which were replaced with robotic parts that looked remarkably like the original human body parts that he had, at least on the outside. Since that battle and recovery of said battle, he's decided that he wants to use Luhma Klein as more than just a radar, and because of this, he took action. Currently, GOA has just given Ernest a customized sniper rifle, and the field testing of said weapon takes place today…

Chapter 1: The Opening Act
Ever since that last fight, I've come to terms with myself. I saw death in that battle, I saw him just as clear as day. Despite coming within inches of Death's touch, I managed to survive. I was pulled out of the battle, thanks to First.
I shouldn't have to rely on First anymore. That's why I decided to go and get me this… shiny new toy. This way, I can at least protect my friends without risking my own life.
“Four D-type Giseisha units are approaching. Ernest-san, are you ready?” Tune's voice came across the communication channels. Charming, soft, yet always apologetic. Oh well, I couldn't ask for a better repairer.
“Yes. I see them… in no particular pattern.” I guess the good thing about having telepathy is that it's really hard for something to get behind you and surprise you. With telepathy, you're always aware of these little things.
Anyway, GOA scheduled a test for the customized sniper rifle that they gave me for when the next small wave of Giseisha, said Giseisha approaching for an attack. Being that they're D-types, they must be stragglers from that last large group of them… They must be desperate or something, attacking in such a small number.
I pulled Luhma Klein to a halt in mid space, and pulled up the rifle. A zoomed-in view appeared in front of my eyes, and I could easily see the small D-types that were approaching me. Being that this was a field test, I had to at least report something, “…feels a little strange. I haven't fired a projectile gun in a long time. I do like the zoomed-in view, though.”
“That's the scope at work. It can zoom in closer if you need, as well as add a layer of infrared if you're having trouble seeing them.” Said an unfamiliar male voice. Must've been one of the GOA weapon technicians. I replied, “Me? Have trouble seeing them? Ha.” So what? I felt like boasting all of the sudden!
I went back to the rifle; the D-types were getting a little bit too close for a good test, so I went ahead and pulled the trigger, announcing it first. “…alright, here I go…” The rifle made a large shock as the heavy caliber bullet exploded in the chamber and sent a heavy stream of sulfuric vapor behind the head. Upon impact, the D-type literally exploded into little Giseisha pieces. Reporting again, “…Confirming a hit on one of the D-types. Very impressive.”
“Roger that, Pilot Coure. Go ahead and finish them off, we'll keep an eye through your cameras.” Mounted cameras were always a must in these little evaluations; the weapons R&D team in addition to the mechanical R&D team used them a lot.
The other three didn't get within a mile of me, however, the last one seemed rather difficult to shoot because it was moving around too much. Apparently, it noticed that its friends were being vaporized by sniper shots. It'd be bad if they ever had the conscious to know that they were only part of their enemy's weapons evaluations.
This is where it all began. Within seconds of defeating the last one, I sensed the presence of something else. Well, more like several something-or-others. And from what I could see in my reading, they weren't friendly.
I was a pilot, and being such, I act fast. Without further hesitation, I reported. “This is Pilot Coure, I've picked up what seems to be fifteen or so…” I wasn't sure of what they were. They weren't Giseisha, whatever they were. “…things. I'm not sure what they are; they don't seem to be Giseisha. Requesting backup.” I wasn't about to take on fifteen or so unknown and unfriendly things with half a magazine of sniper rifle ammunition alone.
“Roger that, Pilot Coure. We'll be dispatching the backup squad of candidates to your position.” During field tests like these, GOA always launched a group or two of the kids in case the test failed and the Giseisha got by to catch them. This time, they wouldn't be fighting the usual Giseisha, however.
Out of pure reaction, I activated the apogee thruster on the Ingrid and dodged what seemed to be an incoming shot from the unknown units. “What the--!?”
Author Note: It's been so long since I've written fanfiction. I'm glad that I'm doing it again, and I'm glad that I'm finally getting an MK story going. 2nd chapter coming soon!
