Chapter 7
“The Soaring Dragon?” Wataru chuckled. “Yes, I've been called that before.” He smiled at Red, who grinned back.
“I'm getting better, Wataru, aren't I?”
“Quite.” Wataru smirked. “Although your water-type jutsu still haven't progressed beyond Water Gun - more's the pity, really - your training with the wind-type moves I've been teaching you is admirable.”
Red beamed. “So do you think I'll be ready for the Chuunin selection exam this year?”
“Natsume would be a fool not to nominate you.” Wataru returned. “And Kasumi… though I've my doubts about Satoshi. How has he been?”
Red scowled. “Irritating.”
Wataru smiled. “Yes, I suspected as much. Do you mind if I ask you a personal question?”
Red blinked. “Sure…”
“Have you awoken your bloodline limit yet?”
Red tensed, before he exhaled slowly. “No.” He confessed. He knew that it showed lack of training on his part - after all, Genji had awakened their bloodline limit - the Trainer's Eyes, when he was only eight, and Red was already twelve - thirteen…
He sighed.
The Trainer's Eyes would help pinpoint weak points, and track the opponent's movements, but their most valuable asset was their copying ability - you could theoretically copy any move with seals if you had the eyes.
It was a dangerous secret.
Wataru nodded slowly. “Then I won't pressure you.” He said quietly. “Be careful, Red.”
“… Why?”
“You'll see soon enough.” Wataru murmured. “Until then, how are you doing with Aerial Ace?”
Red grinned, making the seals and glad the uncomfortable conversation was over. “Not bad.”
He demonstrated, and Wataru said no more that was unrelated to training.
“Satoshi… I don't know why, but he never seems to run out of chakra.” Red brought up at another of their chat sessions.
“It's a secret, but if you don't blab it around…” Wataru told him, “I'll tell you.”
Red gave his teacher a tight-lipped glare, and Wataru laughed. “All right. I won't tell. It's because Pikachu is sealed inside of Satoshi.”
“The… the demon that attacked our village?” Red gaped. “But I thought it was dead!”
“Unfortunately, you can't kill those demons. You can only seal them inside of someone, usually a baby. The children of course have phenomenal powers…”
“I see…” Red said. He wasn't sure what to feel, so he settled for a blank expression. “Then it doesn't matter.”
“What doesn't matter?”
“Him. I don't need to care about him…”
“No. It's better not to.”
“I care about you.” Red told Wataru, and was pleased to see him blush. “Satoshi is my team mate, but… he's so annoying!”
“Well, as long as he doesn't die, you don't have to watch out for him that much, do you?”
“No.”
That was the end of the conversation, and Wataru took him to get dango. They sat on a park bench, eating quietly.
Well, at the very least, he'd become a good ninja, and make his teachers proud. He would! And someday, when he was strong enough he would avenge his clan.
Genji…
I hate you…
“I hate you.”
“The feeling is mutual then.” Red told Satoshi, eyes shadowed. He had no time to waste on petty arguments now.
“You're so arrogant!”
“It's justified.”
“I wish I was on another team!”
“As do I.”
“I swear…” Satoshi glared, “Why do you keep one-upping me?”
“Compete against someone else then.” Red said dryly.
What on earth had Wataru been warning him about…? Maybe Satoshi would be dangerous, if he figured out how to use Pikachu's power. Hmm…
Fighting against an opponent with ten times more chakra would definitely put him at a disadvantage. He'd have to work on taking his opponent out quick and clean.
“You like him.”
“Who?”
“Red.” Natsume said. “It's obvious, Wataru. Why do you care so much?”
“We are linked.” Wataru replied. “But I do not want him to make the same mistake I did.”
Natsume winced. “I see…”
“If he seeks power, and as he is the last survivor of the Nakamura Clan massacre… sooner or later, he will catch his attention.” Wataru spat venomously. Natsume watched the teacups rattle, before she sighed.
“I know. You're probably the best person to take care of Red, though I'm his official teacher…”
Wataru sighed. “By the way, how are your team dynamics? I heard from Red that Satoshi isn't getting along too well with him.”
Natsume winced. “That's an understatement. Satoshi just can't seem to let go of his rivalry with Red, and Red just ignores his efforts, which makes him angrier. Kasumi … is probably adding fuel to the fire since she still loves Red like crazy.”
“But Red doesn't love her.”
“No, but he's been polite, so she likes him and it doesn't look like her crush will stop anytime soon.” Natsume agreed. She paused. “You… and Red…”
Wataru waved a hand in dismissal. “It's nothing yet.”
“Ah. Well, I wish you the best of luck then.”
“You don't care that I'm seducing your student?” Wataru teased.
Natsume's answering grin was vicious. “Not at all… just don't break him, or I'll kill you.”
Wataru chuckled. “Hai, Natsume-sensei!”
Natsume smacked him, but lightly, and ordered another serving of red bean soup.
