Pokemon Fan Fiction / Pokemon Fan Fiction ❯ Dark Temptations Inn ❯ The puzzles begin. ( Chapter 2 )
The lights in the mansion, for once, seemed bright.
I slowly opened my eyes, feeling the light from well lit candles nearby hurt my vision. I grunted, and slowly sat up, noticing the shattered beer bottle laying next to me. I was careful not to cut myself as I stood up. I still had a towel tied around my waist, and my hair was still a bit damp. I noticed that the outside was still dark, and I blinked. Had I only been out for a few minutes? Or had I been out for the the day, and woke up that night?
After I found the front door still locked, I wandered carefully back to my room, and stepped inside, wasting no time to check it out to make sure there were no lurkers, then I shut my door and locked it.
I quickly dressed, allowing my hair to keep it's messy look; Jill always liked it like that.
"Ok, Matthew. You gotta find a way out," I grunted to myself, and wandered back into the room, searching my bag. I found my only weapon; a pocket knife. It would have to do.
After stuffing that into my pocket, I searched the room, and only found a lighter, and a small key. The key must unlocked a drawer or cabinet, I guessed by the size. I was convinced that I would have to find another way out, but first, I wanted to check something.
I looked to the clock.
It was 11:00. But strangely, the clock said AM. But it was still dark out? Strange. The clock must have broken.
I didn't worry about it right now, instead, I walked out of my room, shutting the door behind me.
The hallway was still mostly dim due to the poor candle lighting, and I didn't find any evidence of my attacker. I was almost completely convinced that Charles had come back to try to scare the crap outta me. And I promised that I'd find him, and kick the living crap outta him.
But for now, I'd first need to find a few things.
I wandered back towards the foyer; something hit me inside my head. No, not by Charles, or the 'haunted mansion'; it was a sudden thought!
A window! Break it and get through!
I dashed into the foyer, noticing two large windows nearby the tables; they had no bars over them, and they didn't seem bullet proof, so I picked up a chair, and got closer to one of the windows.
"Always wanted to do this."
I threw the chair into the window, and sure enough, the chair went right through it, the glass shattering everywhere.
I laughed at my success, and dashed over to the window, and..
"What in God's name?!"
I watched the chair fall into what seemed oblivion. The window was right above the edge of the cliff. If I had jumped off, I would fall to my death, even if there was water below. I couldn't see too far because of the darkness, but never hearing the chair hit the bottom made me persuaded to find another way.
I turned around, and sighed, and began to walk to the bar. I noticed something. That door next to the bar; it had to be something special. Or so I hoped.
I quickly moved over to it, and tried the handle..
And just my luck, it was locked. There was a place where a key would fit, but the key I currently had wouldn't work, I knew that for a fact.
I was beginning to get irritated. I growled, and turned to the bar, and slammed my fist onto the counter; it was then I noticed words carved into the countertop.
I stepped to the writing, and did my best to read the words that seemed to be carved into the polished wood with a knife.
"I know everything. I am smarter then anyone alive. There are many copies of me. But some hold more knowledge, and some hold less. I usually never move from where I live, and I allow people to sometimes borrow my knowledge. Years after years, my knowledge usually grows, and my life, never dies."
It seemed like a riddle. What was it talking about?
I began to talk to myself as I pondered over this. "..Smartest person? That, one guy, Einstein? No.. no. Um.. dictionary? Library-" Ah ha!
The library had to be it. I remember that Charles said there was a library at the end of the hallway. I wasn't sure what I'd find there, but there had to be some way to get out.
I ran towards the end of the hallway, pulling out my pocket knife just in case I ran into someone I didn't like. I reached the end of the hall, and noticed three new doors. One door had the word 'stairs' upon it, another set of doors was actually an elevator, and the last set of doors..
The library.
I stepped to the doors, and prayed this wouldn't be locked. Silently praying, I turned the doorknob.
For once, my wish came true.
I opened the door, and stepped into a large, two story library, filled with books and shelves galore.
"I sure hope I don't have to find the damn dictionary in here.." I mumbled to myself, and shut the door before wandering further in.
The library was pretty well lit up, surprisingly. Most of the books seemed covered with dust and cobwebs; not too inviting. There was a set of stairs that led up to the second floor balcony, where there was more books.. and a door. The door looked as if it led into the second floor hallway, but I wasn't interested in that at this moment.
I glanced around; books and more books. What could possibly be helpful here? Maybe there was some secret switch that opened a secret door that lead into a secret hallway. There was probably many secrets in the mansion, but I wasn't just about to go wandering through all one million of these books.
I noticed something. There was a mini table with a glass case ontop of it. I figured that might contain something useful. As I stepped to it, I noticed there was a red book incased within the glass. I sighed, not finding any easy way to take the glass off the book. I wasn't in the mood for toying around.
I slammed my elbow into the weak glass, shattering it. Afterwards, I brushed off the glass and dust from the book.
There was no title on the book, and I opened it. The first few pages were completely blank, and I began to flip through them.
Seems like the book wasn't a waste of time after all.
I smiled a bit, finding a secret compartment within the book that held two keys; I was a bit disappointed when I saw one of the key's had "2nd floor" etched into it, and the other had a room number on it; 231.
"Maybe it's worth checking out," I said to myself before sighing, and I wandered up the library steps.
Just as I was half way up the steps, I heard the first floor door of the library open and shut, but no footsteps. I looked quickly down to the first level, and saw no one. I figured it was that bastard, Charles, and I kept my pocket knife held tightly in my hand.
"Matthew. Looking for me?"
Who the hell is that?
It sounded like a male, but, sounded nothing like the butler had sounded like. I also noticed that the voice seemed to come from every direction. So I simply called out, keeping low just in case.
"Who are you!?"
I soon got the reply. "I am your alpha, and your omega. I am your player. I can end the game within a snap of my fingers, or I can let you live and maybe even escape. I am the god who lives upon the Earth. I am -your- god."
"What the heck are you talking about?!"
I heard a chuckle. A dark, demented chuckle.
"You will see soon, boy." And then it was all quiet.
I kept in my place for a minute, looking everywhere to make sure I wasn't being watched. But I was soon convinced that I had been left alone, and I quickly hurried up the stairs. Something was very, very wrong. And I was beginning to think I might not want to find this, "god", afterall
