Lance hates being Prince. He wears the golden pins in his hair since he is supposed to, and he learns swordplay and all the other arts he should, but really, he knows he's not important, since he has five older brothers in line for the throne and he's just the son of a concubine.

So he stalks at night, and he wears chill black silk while the others wear rich bright brocade, and he plays hauntingly beautiful tones on his wooden flute when the rest of the Court sleeps.

It's not hard for Red to fall in love.

He follows the Prince's every step, traces his every movement, and when they lie intertwined within silken sheets, he can hardly tell where one of them ends and the other begins.

And he's happy.
