A Trainer's Challenge…

~~~~~~~~~~~~
The bus zoomed off into the distance after just releasing its last passenger, leaving the teenage-boy stranded in the massive heat wave that consumed the town he was currently in. He was sweating bullets, his untamed Silver hair sticking to his face and head in some places, leaving room for just his left eye to shine through his mane.
“So hot…” He moaned in displeasure, his tongue hanging out of his mouth slightly. His clothing didn't really help against the weather, either. His outfit consisted of, a long-sleeved black T-shirt, a pair of blue, baggy jeans, and his favorite boots.
Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a group of kids walking in his direction, at least a few years younger than he was; they seemed to be walking home from school, and from the looks of things, they were complaining about the intense heat as well.
Ignoring their complaints, he drew their attention with his voice. “Hey, guys,” He called, and they walked over to him, staring at the significantly taller male. “You got any idea how much ramen's costing a guy these days? I'm absolutely starving, and would like nothing more than some delicious ramen in my belly.” He explained, crouching down to his shortest, eye-leveling with the kids. He raised a finger before continuing.
“Problem is, I don't have any money. So… I have a little show for you kiddies today that you can pay me for before you go home, okay?” He asked, and reached into his back pocket, pulling out a small Pokemon doll, a Pikachu to be exact. The silver-haired individual sat the doll on the concrete ground, and waited for a second, before the doll sprang to life before the children's eyes.
“See? Isn't that great?” He asked, as the doll walked around in circles, and performed flips and other un-amusing junk. “Worth a couple bucks, right? You can pay me whatever you think it's worth.” He decided. But the kids didn't seem convinced, and one of the boys from the group poked the Pikachu doll with his ruler, looking unimpressed.
“Is that all?” He asked, “Doesn't it do something else?” One of the girls asked, and the taller male's smile died just a little. “You expect us to pay for this? That doll's filthy.” The boy complained, and the teen's smile died just a bit more. “That thing's totally nasty!” The girl agreed, and by now the silver-haired stranger was visibly frowning. “Are you out of your mind, Mister--,” The little boy began, but was abruptly cut off.
“Okay!” He screamed, standing up to his full height, and scaring the younger ones a few feet away from him. The boy took advantage of the golden-eyed teen's anger and took the chance to kick the doll a few feet away, and the teen exploded in anger.
“Run, you guys!” The kid ordered, and the group began to run away, ignoring the individual's angry tone. “Get back here, you little fuckers!” He shouted, dropping to his knees. He was too tired and hungry to chase them down. Besides, the heat was practically melting him.
His Pokemon would probably be ashamed to see him in such a position, but he cast the thought away, and took a seat on a nearby seawall. Before he knew it, he had taken off his pack and laid himself down, already drifting off to sleep….
Yusuke could feel his sleep drifting away…. And a strange web-footed presence stepping around on his cheek; its feet were wet, and felt weird. He jolted up with a start, scaring away the flock of Pelliper that were either standing on him, or around him.
“Get away from my ramen!” He yelled out to sea, even startling himself when he realized he was only dreaming. The Pelliper - scared out of their heads - flew away, and he was glad that they didn't leave him any `presents'. The silver-haired male sat up on his elbow, something - someone, actually - had caught his attention.
A female.
She was standing on the seawall a few feet away from him, arms outstretched to the east and west, staring out to sea. Yusuke, visibly confused, sat up, crossing his legs, continued to stare at her - Until she glanced at him.
Returning her arms to her sides, the girl glanced over at the silver-haired teen, her flowing orange hair swaying every which way. She crouched down, staring him in his visible eye.
“Hello.” She greeted; Yusuke turned away, not acknowledging the younger girl. She waddled over to him in her crouch, giving him a small smile. “Hot, isn't it?” She asked, noticing the bullets of sweat trailing down his face.
He continued to ignore her, folding his arms. `Who is this girl? What does she want? Money? Pfft, I don't have any money, that's for sure.' He thought, returning his glance to her once she stood.
“You must be thirsty. Stay here, I'll get you something to drink.” She offered, and dashed down the small flight of stairs on the seawall, running over to a vending machine. She purchased two drinks, and ran back to the seawall, accidentally tripping over her own feet, she fell flat on her face.
Yusuke stood, cocking his eyebrow at the display. The ground was completely flat, how could she have tripped? She was on her feet again in a second, and standing in front of him in another, holding his drink out to him.
“Here you are.” She offered with a smile. Yusuke gave her an odd look, but took the `juice-box' nonetheless, popping in the straw; he took a swig of the liquid…
And immediately regretted it…
He coughed violently, spitting out the foul drink he'd been offered. Slightly pissed, he actually looked at what he was drinking. “…. Peach Nectar?” He inquired in disbelief. He turned the juice box upside down, squeezing it with a frown. The rest of it was wasted onto the ground; the girl seemed offended by his actions and reached out for the empty carton, trying to take it from him.
“Why would you go and do something like that?” She asked. “You tryin' to make a fool of me?!” He growled, throwing the carton away.
“No!” She defended, “Why would I be mean to you?” she inquired, “I think this stuff's delicious,” She added, taking a sip from her drink with a small smile.
He turned away, walking down the stairs of the seawall, and she followed, like a lost puppy.
This was going to be a long day….
Pitter, patter…
Pitter, patter…
The orange-haired girl's footsteps echoed Yusuke's as he walked throughout the town he'd just arrived in only yesterday. He decided to finally acknowledge the younger girl that had been following him for a while.
“Why are you following me?” He inquired, not bothering to slow down an inch.
“'Cause, I wanna play,” she answered, and he stopped, turning to look at her. “Huh?” He asked, confused. “You wanna go play on the beach?” She asked him, smiling. “The beach?” He scoffed, as if it was the worst place in the world. “Well…. I saw some kids playing on the beach yesterday, and it looked fun.” She explained, rubbing her arm.
“I can't,” He responded, glancing back at her. “Please? We could run on the sand,” She offered, imitating a jogging motion, “Or we could splash water on each other. Then, at the end of the day, we'd say, “See ya tomorrow”, and go our separate ways.” She said.
“The almost sounds like… Being friends,” Yusuke noted, finally stopping and fully turning to the girl.
“Yeah! You could be friends with me, and I you.” She said, pointing to him, and then to herself.
“We can't be friends; we don't even know each other's names.” He told her, his visible golden-eye narrowing.
“My name's Asuka Masaki,” She told him, expecting him to give his name as well, and he did.
“I'm Yusuke Kunisagi,” He nodded, “But that's not important. I can't play with you right now…” His stomach growled, and he held it with his free hand - his other hand was carrying his pack - crouching down. “… I have to earn some money, so I can get something to eat.” He informed, and his stomach growled in agreement.
“Is that all you need?” She smiled, holding her hand out to him. “You can eat at my house,” She told him; Yusuke took a step back - although he couldn't pass up an opportunity like this, he couldn't just go with her. So, he decided what he'd do in a matter of seconds.
“I'll go with you… If you have a two-on-two Pokemon battle with me.” He offered.
“But I'm still in the Academy.” She answered; he almost face-planted into the concrete.
“Aren't you like 15?” He asked, confused. “I have to take remedial classes.” She cleared him in, looking away. “So, you don't have a Pokemon?” He asked again, scratching the back of his head.
This wasn't how he'd planned things to go…
“…. Wait, I do have one Pokemon. The Academy gave it to me to train and study for my final exam.” Asuka remembered, fishing through her schoolgirl outfit, she fished out a Great Ball.
“So, what do you say to a battle?” He asked, revealing his own Poke' ball.
“Uh… Sure.” She answered. “Good. Ladies first,” he offered, taking a small bow. She blushed slightly, “Uh, okay.” She pressed a small button on the ball, and it expanded to fit fully in her hand.
“Go! I choose you! Riolu!” She called, and the small red light from the ball materialized into a Riolu; it danced happily upon its release, striking a pose.
Yusuke smirked, throwing the ball into the air, “Time to Rock n' Roll! Chain!” He introduced, and a Charmeleon appeared, scratching its head with a hint of indifference in its attitude.
At its Master's command, Chain adopted a battle pose, breathing smoke through its nostrils. “Char! Meleon!” It grunted, charging at its enemy with the speed of a Flying-type. “Lu!” The smaller fighting-type giggled, awaiting a command.
“Riolu… Um, use your Mach Punch?” She asked, and the Riolu took off, quickly landing a swift Mach Punch against Chain's jaw almost effortlessly; Chain spiraled to the ground, winded.
“Chain, shake it off - then use your Flamethrower!” Yusuke ordered, and Chain complied, quickly jumping to its feet and released a plume of flames toward the quick Pokemon.
“Rio!” The blue-furred one cheered, dancing its way around the flames with a small smile.
“Focus Punch!”
“Slash!” The two Pokemon charged and Riolu leapt at its opponent, its fist glowing and charging up its energy. Chain dodged the quick punch, slamming its tail into the back of Riolu's head, it brought it to the ground, before slashing upwards at its chin; the fighting-type was sent spiraling across the ground, grunting.
“Char!” Chain cheered, shooting flames upward into the sky.
“Riolu, try your Force Palm.” Asuka told the Pokemon; Riolu nodded, and jumped to its feet - it was on the fire-breathing Chameleon in a second.
“Dodge and use Skull Bash!” Chain did as it told, dodging the Force Palm; it thrust its body - head first - at the Riolu with all its might. “Dodge it,” Riolu jumped over the Charmelon, planting a Mach Punch in its back before flipping in front of its trainer, jabbing the air a few times.
Chain hopped to its feet, and without warning, stored flames in its mouth before shooting it around itself and proceeding to go into a roll, executing a Flame Wheel. Riolu didn't have enough time to dodge the scorching wheel, and took the attack head on, sustaining maximum damage.
Riolu fell to the ground, knocked out.
“Riolu, return! That was good, and you're an excellent trainer, Yusuke.” Asuka smiled, putting the Great Ball back within her dress.
Chain posed, before it was recalled to its Poke' ball.
“Thanks, Sakura. Um… Shall we go?” He asked.
`So, I went back to her house, lured by the thought of food,'
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Yusuke ate the ramen he was offered greedily, not leaving one noodle left in the bowl when he was finished. “Do you want to go play, now?” Asuka asked, her head slumped into her hands, her elbows resting on the table they were sitting at.

“Look kid,” He began, pointing at her with his chopsticks, “We barely even know each other. I'm just a stranger, and you want to go play? Besides, I have to find a place to sleep before it gets dark.” He informed her, slurping down the rest of his food.

“You mean you don't have a place to stay?” She inquired, giving him a curious stare.

“I'll probably be sleeping on the seawall again.” He answered, setting the bowl on the table.

“You could stay here… If you wanted.” She suggested, earning a confused - almost surprised - glance from the teen. “What?” He asked, not sure if he'd heard her correctly.

“I said you can stay here, I don't think my mom would mind.” She told him, smiling.

“Really? Are you sure your mother would be fine with just any old stranger staying at her house?” Yusuke inquired, already having a feeling that this wasn't going to end well.

“My mom is really… `Hands Off' about that kind of stuff… I guess I really shouldn't be talking about my mother that way, but she wouldn't mind.” Asuka explained.

“Okay…” Yusuke agreed, not quite believing the girl 100%, but he'd stick around… At least until he was booted out by Asuka's mother, which he was almost sure that would occur.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
“This is hard!” Asuka complained, leaning over the table as she tried to continue her homework.
Yusuke had decided to help her with her Academy Homework, but he was nearly as stumped as he was. But, when Yusuke was younger… There wasn't an Academy. He wasn't even registered as a Pokemon Trainer. His mother left Chain, and a few other of his Pokemon to him when he was younger. He didn't even have a Starter. But, he tried to help her nonetheless… And it was difficult, due to her whining.
“Yusuke, do you ever think I'll need to know what Jolteon's highest stat is to be a good Pokemon Trainer?” She asked, looking up at the confused male. “Quiet!” He responded, “If you want me to help you with your homework, you have to let me concentrate. And, sit up.” He instructed, pushing her up by her shoulder from her slouching form.
“You sounded just like my mom when you said that.” She said with a small smile, turning to watch the two eating Pokemon in the kitchen.
“Did I?” He gave a small smile, rubbing the back of his head.
“Hmm…. I think that's her now.” Asuka giggled, hearing the sound of a lock turning. “Are you sure it's okay for me to be here?” Yusuke inquired once more, a worried look adorning her features.
“Yes, of course,” She smiled, “I'll smooth things over with her,” the orange-haired teen added, giving Yusuke a small wink.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Absolutely not!” Ms. Masaki yelled, slamming her fist into the table they were all sitting at.

She looked to be a young woman, either in her late 20's or early 30's. She was a bit smaller than Yusuke - around a few centimeters taller than Sakura. Her long brown hair cascaded down her shoulders and to her lower back, and a few bangs framed her face. A look of anger crossed her features.

“This isn't how you told me things would be,” Yusuke hissed in a whisper, glaring towards Asuka, who was staring down at her folded legs as her mother continued.

She slammed her hand against the table again. “That's enough out of you!” She ordered, and he quickly shut up.

“Please, Mom,” Asuka pled, looking up to her mother. “He's really nice, Mom and he needs a place to stay.” She told her. Ms. Masaki sighed, still frowning. She turned to Yusuke, her eyes narrowing.

“How do you know my Asuka?” She ordered.

Yusuke froze….

That is, until he noticed Asuka holding up her notebook behind her mother's head, a few lines scribbled on it.

“Uh… We go to school together.” He answered. “Aren't you a bit old to be in school with her?” She inquired; he glanced over to Asuka's new set of lines.

Yusuke held his chin in his hand, smirking. “Don't fall for me,” He said, coolly.

Ms. Masaki replied by planting her paper fan on the top of his head. “In your dreams!” She yelled, amused and pissed at the boy's words all at the same time.

“Mom…” Asuka repeated, staring at her Mother with a pleading look. “Okay, he can stay.” She decided with a sigh, running a hand through her long brown hair.

“What?! Really?” He asked in disbelief.

“Does it look like I'm kidding? You can stay, but only under two conditions: First, you sleep in the shed, Second—,” Ms. Masaki smiled, slamming a bottle of sake on the table.

“—You have a drink with me!” She grinned.
