Chapter Five: Odale Town; At Last
Cassia walked up to a sign in the center of town, it read:ODALE TOWN “where things start off scarce.”
“Well at least I’m in the right place; but where do I start?” she said glancing about the tiny town.
“Excuse me miss? You’re new here right? Here. I’d like you to have this complimentary super potion.” Said a man dressed in a white and blue workers apron that said “POKE MART” on the front.
Cassia turned to him and took the bottle. “Oh, uh, thanks sir.” She replied.
“A super potion is several times stronger than regular potions and a bit more spendy but it can be used anytime and sometimes its even more useful than a pokemon center in certain situations, remember that.” He said as he walked away.
Cassia continued walking and came across a small road sign that said “Route 103 just ahead.”
“This must be where Brendan is, Blaze; let’s find him.” Cassia said to her little friend as they followed the road for about a ½ mile, when she saw a familiar person standing in some grass.
“Hey, there he is!” she said as she walked up to him. He didn’t notice her at first, because he was looking up things in a red book like device.
Cassia presumed it was the poke’dex her dad told her about. “Okay, so this one and that one live on Route 103…”he mumbled staring hard at the device in his hand.
Then he glanced to his left and was shocked to see Cassia standing there.
“Hey, Cassia; how are you? All right dad gave you a pokemon!” he said as he noticed Blaze standing by her leg. “So, have you been training it? What’s its name?” Brendan said asking questions about Blaze. “
“Yeah, he’s had some training and his name is Blaze.” Cassia said answering both questions at once.
“Good name. Hey since you’re here how about a little battle?” he challenged her.
“Sure. I could use a warm up.” She replied.
“Great! I’ll teach you what being a trainer is about! Go! Poke ball” he said tossing his pokemon’s ball to the ground.
“Mudkip-kip” it said as it appeared in front of its trainer.
“Let’s go Blaze!” Cassia said pointing at the Mudkip.
“Okay Blaze, use Focus Energy!” Cassia ordered.
Blaze tensed up and focused all his power for his next attack.
“Mudkip! Use Tackle attack.” Brendan ordered.
Mudkip charged forward; straight toward Blaze.
“Blaze, evade it then use scratch.”
Blaze jumped aside as the Mudkip charged by, and did a number of scratches on its head and lower body. He was battered but refused to give in.
“Use tackle again!” Brendan ordered a second time.
“Blaze get in there and battle back with a barrage of scratch attacks!” Cassia also said.
The two attacked each other relentlessly, neither wanting to give in. But the battle proved to be too much for the Mudkip and it fainted, making Blaze victorious in his first battle.
“Huh, Cassia you’re not too shabby. Here’s $300.00 for your win.” Brendan said giving her the money she earned. “I think I get it. I think I know why my dad has his eye out for you now. Look your Pokemon already likes you even though you just got him. Cassia, I get the feeling that you could easily befriend any Pokemon you want.” He said praising her.
She blushed and rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly.
“Hey Cassia, are those Poke balls? Where did you get them? They’re cool.” Brendan said looking at the balls on her belt.
“What these? My mom gave them to me. She had them specially made.” She replied coyly.
“Oh. Well, we should head back to the lab.” Brendan said picking up his back and heading off.
“Whew. That was a close one. He’s a great guy; he’ll be a good friend and rival and he’s super cute too.” She said laughing a little.
“HEY! I’m heading back to my dad’s lab now. Cassia you should hustle back too.” He said as he walked further ahead with her close behind.
As Cassia got back to her town, she saw the sign that marked the entrance it read: LITTLE ROOT TOWN “A town that can’t be shaded by any hue.”
“That is so true.” Cassia thought as she arrived at the lab. She walked in and saw Professor Birch and Brendan waiting for her.
“Hello Cassia. I heard you beat Brendan on your first try. That’s excellent. Brendan has been helping me with my research for a long time. He has an extensive history as a trainer already. Here Cassia, I created this Poke’dex for my research but I think you should have this one.” Professor Birch said handing her the Poke’dex.
“Thank you very much sir.” Cassia said graciously taking it.
“It’s a tool that automatically makes a record of any Pokemon that you meet or capture. Brendan goes everywhere with it. Whenever Brendan catches a rare Pokemon and records its data in the poke’dex why Brendan looks for me while I’m out ding field work and shows me.” Birch said.
“DAD! Quit bragging about me. I can’t stand that. So you got a Poke’dex too. Well then here I’ll give you these too.” Brendan said putting six poke’ balls into her hands.
“Thanks Brendan.” She said putting them into the front pouch of her waist pack. Even though she had lots already, it was better to have too many than too little.
“You know it’s more fun to have a whole bunch of Pokemon. I’m going to explore all over the place to find different Pokemon. If I find a cool pokemon, you bet I’ll try to capture it with poke balls.” He said smiling.
“Um sir didn’t you say that the Poke’dex automatically records data on one’s I’ve caught? Have you seen this one before? Go! Echo.” Cassia said tossing his ball to the lab floor. It made a small ping-like sound as it bounced off then erupted in light.
“Houndoom” Echo said as he appeared before his mistress.
He watched her intently awaiting her orders, but he also kept a watchful eye on Professor Birch and Brendan.
“Oh, WOW! Cassia you captured a Houndoom!?! They’re extremely rare around these parts.” Birch said excitedly as he grabbed a notebook and began writing stuff down.
“So Houndoom is what he’s called? Cool.” Cassia said looking at her Pokemon. “Hey I know. I’ll try the Poke’dex.”
*Houndoom The Dark Pokemon, Houndoom live in packs, whose leader is decided by fierce fighting among its members. The leader develops horns sharply raked towards its back to display its dominant status. Houndoom is one of the most feared predators among Pokémon. Just the sound of its howl is enough to send all other Pokémon which hear it hurrying back to the safety of their nests. Houndoom is particularly infamous for its fiery breath. While most Fire-type Pokémon have the ability to breathe fire, Houndoom's flame has a special property. Thanks to the toxins in its body, a burn inflicted by a Houndoom's pungent flame will cause persistent pain that can never be alleviated. This is why Houndoom is so greatly feared; if it burns you, you'll feel the pain of that burn forever with no hope of relief. * the pokedex chimed.
"Wow. Echo, you're so cool." Cassia said patting her pokemon's head. Echo smiled happily.
Then she pointed it at Blaze.
*Torchic The Chick Pokemon, Torchic are known for disliking darkness because it prevents them from seeing their surroundings, regardless of their proficiency with fire techniques which can illuminate the dark. Before Torchic's legs develop fully, they stay with their Pokemon Trainer, following behind with unsteady, hopping steps while they learn to walk properly. They also have a sac filled with churning fire deep within their stomach, allowing them to give literal "warm hugs" to their trainers. This powerful fire also serves as their "ammunition" in battles; when attacked, they retaliate by spitting fire, at temperatures of over 1,800 degrees.* the pokedex chimed.
"Also very cool but I already knew about the warm hugs part." she said picking Blaze up and hugging him. He chirped happily.
Echo carefully watched Professor Birch; who was busily taking notes about him, he was to close for his own comfort. Snarling, Echo stepped in front of Cassia, facing the professor. He was ready to protect her and Blaze if needed. Professor Birch got a little to close and Echo snapped at him.
Birch withdrew hastily and stared at the snarling pokemon.
"Uh, Echo what's the matter?" Cassia asked worriedly.
"Dont worry Cassia. He's just a little over protective. Its natural for Dog type pokemon. He's already fond of you, so naturally he's going to protect you. You're really quite lucky, not many people can handle a Houndoom. They are really picky about their trainers. Now what did you call him? Echo was it? Well, take good care of him and he will be a forever faithful friend." Birch said to Cassia, being careful not to get to close to her as Echo was still guarding her.
"Thanks sir, I will." said Cassia relieved that Echo didn't harm him.
She bowed respectfully to the both of them and turned and left the lab.
She was on her way out of town; when her mom stopped her.
"Wait, Cassia! I wanted to apologize for starting that fight with you yesterday. Your so much like your father, please be careful on your journey and take care of your Pokemon. They will be your life-long friends. You look good together with your Pokemon, your father and you. Here, honey. If you are going on an adventure make sure to take some food with you. I made these lunch boxes for you dear, enjoy. To think you have your very own Pokemon now...I am overjoyed. But please take care. If anything happens, you can come home. Go on, go get them honey." her mom said hugging her goodbye.
"Hey, mom wait. What'ya say guys lets stay home one more night. Then we can leave in the morning." Cassia asked her Pokemon. They both nodded.
"Mom, we've decided to stay one more night and leave tomorrow morning." she said heading back to the house.
"Cassia; make sure you have everything your going to need for your journey. Food and medicine are important so please make sure you have plenty." her mom said.
"Dont worry mom, I will. Oh, I want to introduce you to my Pokemon. This is my Torchic, his name is Blaze...you met him earlier. This is Echo he is a Houndoom. I caught him yesterday while searching for Blaze. And this is my Pikachu, Sparky. Go, pokeball." she said releasing her Pikachu from his ball.
'Pikachu-pika!' Sparky said as he appeared before Cassia.
"Honey, your Pokemon are wonderful. They will be such good friends if you treat them well. Remember that dear. Now off to bed with you, you have a big day ahead of you tomorrow!" her mother said kissing her on the forehead.
"I love you mom, see ya in the morning. Come on guys lets go." Cassia said heading upstairs to her room.
"You know what guys, I am definitely miss my bed too." she said as she settled down for a good night's sleep.
Blaze and Sparky settled on the bed with her while Echo faithfully took his place beside her bed. Cassia covered him with a spare blanket then went to sleep.
Now that she has found Brendan, won her first battle and recieved her Pokedex Cassia is well on her way.
Wait and see what new surprises await Cassia as she officially sets out on her journey....
