Chapter 3
True to his word, they started training the next day, after a healthy breakfast. Ash had called his mom and informed her he was doing more training, but would be back in Pallet for his birthday. Misty and Brock had returned to their gyms, nearly a year of traveling was enough.
“There's a lot more than pokemon battling, Ash.” Lance said. “First of all, you still need to chose Mastery.”
“Hmm?”
“It's a specialty, of a sort.”
Ash furrowed his brow. “I'm not quite sure I understand, can you explain?”
“Like I only train dragons, mostly…”
“But isn't that discrimination?” Ash asked.
“I didn't think of it that way. You can have other pokemon, but you choose the pokemon you feel closest to.”
Ash was about to mention Pikachu, but paused.
It was a hard decision to make. He liked all his pokemon…
“Or, we can do it the easier way.”
“What's the easier way?”
Lance held out his hands, a ball of clear light forming; its outline barely visible. “The standard test.”
Ash was startled as the ball flew towards him. He tried to run, but a few seconds later he felt it tingling…
It was inside of him?
“What's going on?!”
“Don't fight it, Ash. I'm just scanning for what type you should be.” Lance reassured the boy. * I've seen water, shadow, electric… but who knows what else might pop up? Especially since he got light and fire… *
After a second, the ball reappeared, now dyed white with a swirl of blue and one of red.
“Light… ice… fire…” Lance muttered. “Strange, there should only be one type, but I suppose if you mix them you'd get water.”
Ash blinked. “Why?”
“Well, the only mastery that can cover all types would be dark… shadow… or light.”
“Well, the only mastery that can cover all types would be dark… shadow… or light.”
“But you're?”
“Darkness, Dragon, Ice… many things. I'm just very well known as Dragon and completely unknown, I keep my dark power hidden usually.”
“Then I should be light?”
“What brought that on?”
“Um…” Ash blushed. “Er, I had a dream where you were calling me `light'.” He didn't mention that he had also dreamed Lance was cuddling him.
That was just too farfetched to be anything but a dream!
Ash nodded to himself. * Yes, it was just a dream. *
Pikachu ate another bite of an apple, smothered in ketchup. Ash turned to Lance, waiting for a reply.
“Light would be ideal, but I'm not sure I can teach you that much about it. I usually don't use light.”
“I see…”
“But then, light mirrors dark in shadow either way, so it might not be too bad. So now that we've decided on type… we'll start with the basic spells.”
“You mean like magic?”
“There is magic, alchemy, plenty of things to do with Mastery.” Lance said. “Hmm… do you know any spells?”
“I don't think so…”
“Can you cause things to happen sometimes?”
Ash frowned. “Well, when I fall, I never break anything… even if it's really high up…”
“Then let's try an experiment.” Lance said. He teleported them to the top of the building, and then pushed Ash off.
“EEKKKKKKKKKKK!”
< It should work… flying type is one of his attributes… >
Ash panicked, closed his eyes, and waited for the inevitable thump.
It didn't sound.
Opening his eyes very cautiously, Ash noticed he was floating about two inches off the ground.
“What?”
“I knew it.” Lance said. * Hidden power is still power, it just needs to be activated… of course. *
“You pushed me off!” Ash accused, landing carefully on his feet, still nervous despite all odds.
“As I said, it was a test…”
“That was mean of you!”
“Who ever said the road to anything was easy?” Lance narrowed his eyes. “You don't think being a pokemon master is just a walk in the park, do you?”
“Who ever said the road to anything was easy?” Lance narrowed his eyes. “You don't think being a pokemon master is just a walk in the park, do you?”
“N-no…”
Ash reiterated. “Of course not! I've been through situations! I've been stranded in snowstorms! I've rescued pokemon from poachers! I've been kidnapped by wild squirtle! I've fought giant robots!”
“Then why should my training be any easier?”
Ash huffed and blustered for a few minutes, but finally realized the validity of the point. It didn't make him much happier though.
“Since you can levitate, we'll start with that.”
“I can?”
“What do you think you were doing?” The trainer asked.
“… Oh.”
“Now, recall the feeling…”
Ash began to float, but it stayed only an inch or so, and he could only keep it up for about a minute. Still, it was a start.
Lance told Ash to practice while he went to eat lunch. Then, after another meal, Ash spent the afternoon studying. Lance had presented him with an array of books he had to learn to become a better trainer.
Who knew pokemon and the world were so complex?
He wasn't going to give up though!
Ash was exhausted when he fell asleep that night, but he felt curiously happy, almost as if he were worthwhile…

Interesting.
