Chapter 4

“I don't mean you're a bad pokemon!”
Pikachu laughed as Ash got flustered. Lance hugged him.
“… Lance?”
You're not a bad trainer either.
“Really?”
Really. What TMs do you have? Celadon has a good Mart, where you can buy a lot of them.
“Oh! Um… right now? Bide, Bubblebeam, Thunderwave, Thunderbolt, and… Mega Kick.”
He doesn't use TMs much. Pikachu explained sweetly.
Ash handed them over to Lance. Lance smiled. I can work with this…
“Lance has learned Bubblebeam. Lance has learned Thunderbolt.” Dexter chimed.
“What? How did you know?”
I train dragon-type pokemon, Ash! Of course I know what dragons should be able to learn!
“… Oh.”
He blushed.

Lance patted him on the head. Don't worry; these things take time. Remember, I was a trainer for four years or so…
Ash blushed in any case.
Lance was changeable… were all girls like that? In any case, they walked to the Celadon Pokemon Center.
After healing his pokemon, Ash called professor Oak.
“No, we're still studying, but could you swing by my lab?”
“Certainly.”
A quick flight on a Pidgeot and they were in Pallet.

Oak and Bill were studying a variety of complicated looking mathematical formulas when they went inside.
“So how are things going?”
“Well, I got the Thunder Badge, and Lance leveled up somewhat…”
Oak frowned. “Lance, I have a question.”
“Genie…”
“You were hit by a thunderstone and you had been around water stones. How does a ghost type factor into the equation? Or dragon for that matter?”
Bill nodded. “Faeries, magical humans, were typed by electric, water, air, fire, plant, and ice. Dragon and ghost never figured.”
“Genie!” Lance yelled for a few minutes, while Ash hurriedly listened.
“She said that she was wearing a necklace with a dragon fang on it, and that might explain the dragon-type…”
“Could be, that boosts dragon-type moves.”
“Ghost she doesn't know, but aren't all faeries kind of, well, otherworldly?”
“I suppose you have a point there. Lance, you've been a pokemon for maybe a week. Have you noticed any changes?”
“Genie, genie, genie.”
“She eats raw fish…”
“That's not too unusual, many people enjoy sashimi…” Bill smiled. “Anything else? We'd like to try and change her back ASAP.”
“Genie, genie, genie?”
“She wants to know where the wings came from. Dragons don't have steel wings, do they?”
“… Steel…” Oak muttered. “I've heard about that, from Professor Elm in Johto. It's a new type, weak to fire and fighting, strong against rock. That's what her wings are?”
“I think so.”
“Fascinating.”
Ash let Oak have his pokédex, as it had tracked Lance's development. Oak sighed. “Well, at least on the plus side, I don't think she'll evolve.”
Lance smiled.
“However, I don't see anything that could change her back just yet. We're still trying to figure out how to un-evolve DNA. Since she's really a pokemon and her DNA was not fused with that of another species, it must have changed, something like an Eevee…”
Lance sighed.
Ash looked at her sympathetically and mouthed `I'm sorry' again. He received a glare that implied he should get to work.
Seeing as there was nothing new to report, Oak bid them adieu, and they flew back to Celadon.

They had just walked into Erika's gym when Misty showed up.
“Ash! I heard you caught a new species of pokemon! Can I see it?”
“Who told you?”
“Oh, I just know these things.” Misty said, smiling sweetly. Ash backed up, not quite sure…
“I'm sorry, but no.”
“Your call!” Misty said, before she attacked. Ash eeped as he ran for the exit. Pikachu took a deep breath and released a Thundershock.
`Misty' shifted, melting into a puddle of pink goo.
A ditto?
“But where did it come from?”
I don't know… pikachu sniffed. Don't let it escape!
“How?”
Pikachu pressed the button on Lance's poke ball, letting her out. The dragon type blinked for a few minutes at the ditto.
Does it look familiar?
Drake… Lance hissed. I always thought he was crushing on me. Well, looks like he found out since he _is_ Orange Chamipon…
“Um…”
Lance locked eyes with the paralyzed pokemon. Listen, ditto… if I find you spying on me again, I will personally disembowel you and feed you to my Dragonite, do you hear me?
Ditto paled.
Even ditto could explode, implode, and otherwise die.
Lance smirked. Understand?
Y-yes!
Ash looked concerned. “Who is this Drake?”
Just a second, Lance said, before Ditto ran off. Drake is Champion of the Orange League… and we don't get along…
“Are you two rivals?”
You could say that, although I'd like to think I'm better than he is.
“And now he's trying to capture you?”
Lance nodded.
“Don't worry! I'll protect you! I promise!” Lance chuckled as Ash hugged her protectively.
How sweet… Pikachu thought.
“Now let's get the Rainbow Badge!”

It was fast.
Charmander played Ash proud that day, and sure enough, the Rainbow Badge was his. Quick battle indeed, three hits via Flamethrower and that was the end of it.
They were just leaving town when a boy on a Dragonite swooped down.

“So it's true.”
“Genie, genie, genie!” Lance spat. * If he thinks I'm going to willingly go with him and play harem girl, he's wrong! We've always been at each other's throats trying to prove we were the _real_ dragon master, and now… *
“My name's Drake. I'm the Orange League Supreme Champion.” Drake said arrogantly, seeing Ash. “And you are?”
“Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town.”
“All right, Ash! I challenge you for ownership of your genie!”
“… What? Isn't that stealing pokemon?”
“Not if you agree.” Drake said arrogantly. “However, I highly doubt you have anything that can defeat my Dragonite.”
Ash paled. That Dragonite did look awfully powerful.
“Genie!”
“Lance, I wish you could speak human language right now so I won't have to translate that phrase.” Ash muttered.
“Granted.” Lance said after a blink-nod.

Lance turned to face Drake. “So I have no right in this? It's only my life we're discussing.”
“_You_ think you can beat my Dragonite?”
Lance smirked. “Ptera, let's go!”
Her hands glowed and then Aerodactyl was with her. Hopping on its back, she flew up into the air.
Drake followed.
“Ptera, Supersonic!”
The confusing waves shot out at Drake, who avoided them, but they did hit his Dragonite.
“Now, Razor Wing!”
“… Razor Wing? Never heard of that move.” Ash muttered as he consulted his pokédex.
Pikachu shrugged.
Aerodactyl's wings gleamed, before attacking, long red bloody gashes appearing on Dragonite's skin.
“Looks like I guessed right. Your Dragonite's large size reduces its defense, so it doesn't have steel skin like mine.” Lance smiled. “Okay, Aerodactyl, let's finish. Hyper Beam!”
“Dragonite, counter with your own Hyper Beam!”
Drake's Dragonite snapped out long enough to attack, and the two hyper beams met in midair, trying to shove one another back.
“Give it up Lance!”
Lance's Aerodactyl suddenly dived down, evading the Hyper Beam, before shooting a second beam straight into Dragonite's already damaged stomach area.
“Ah! Dragonite!”
Drake and Dragonite went flying, but Drake recalled his pokemon. “Fine, fine. You win. Stay with him for all I care.”
He flew off, leaving Ash looking at Lance in surprise. “How did you do it?”
“Don't I keep my pokemon in that Great Ball with me? Well, all I had to do was summon them.”
“Sugoi…”
“I just hope no one finds out about me being a pokemon. I can understand why Agatha might have told Drake, but still…”
Ash nodded.
That was a bad, bad thing…
