Chapter 1: On the Road to Become a Master

A red haired girl yawned as she woke up. The sun was bright and the sky was blue. She could hear the Pidgey and Spearow chirping in the distance. She was excited. Today was the day she would start her Pokemon journey. She already had a Pokemon of her own, a feisty little Growlithe. She just needed to visit Professor Pine to get her Pokedex. She probably also had to drag her cousin to the laboratory to get her very first Pokemon.
“Mama, is Riku here?” The red haired girl called. “No honey, not yet. She must be sleeping.” Her mother called back. “Nina maybe you should wake her up.” Nina sighed. “Alright. I’ll wake up the scaredy cat.”

Nina looked in the mirror and brushed her hair and tied it in her trademark pigtails. Again looking in the mirror, she wanted to make sure she looked good. She wore her favorite black tank top and her denim shorts with the chain hanging from the left belt hoop. She wore her brand new black and white sneakers and her favorite blue socks. “Where are my gloves?” Nina wondered as she looked on her dresser. A pair of finger-less blue gloves sat next to her Pikachu alarm clock. Slipping them on, she smiled with satisfaction.

Nina walked down the hallway of her small house and entered the kitchen where her mother, Sara, was cooking. Nina felt a little bad for begging her mother to let her go on this journey. Her mother was against it since her father vanished years ago after claiming to go on a Pokemon journey. Nina hated her father for doing that, but it wasn’t gonna stop her. “Mama, I’m going to get Riku.” Nina said as she walked towards the door.

Nina didn’t have to walk very far to get to her older cousin’s house. It was only two houses away. Nina smiled when she saw her fury companion run towards her. “Growly! Good morning!” She said happily, kneeling down to pet it. Growly proceeded by licking her face. “Let’s hurry and get Riku! Maybe she won’t be scared of you this time.”

They approached the small red house about 2 minutes later. Nina proceeded to knock on the door. A minute later, a blond haired woman opened the door and smiled. “Hello Nina. Riku’s getting ready. Want to come in?” “I’m sorry Aunt Arisu; I’m actually in a hurry.” Nina said. “Oh I see. Well, she should be ready in a minute.” “Okay.” Nina smiled.

A few minutes later, a tall blond girl exited the house. She dressed in black, gothic style clothing. She stopped in her tracks when she saw Nina’s Growlithe. “You brought him here Nina?” She asked. “Don’t worry Riku. He isn’t gonna attack you. It’s not like you’ll attack me.” Riku giggled nervously. “You have to understand how I feel about any kind of Pokemon…” Nina sighed. “Don’t worry. I won’t let any Pokemon attack you. C’mon, we have to visit Professor Pine.” “Professor Pine? Why?” Riku asked. “I need a Pokedex and you need your first Pokemon!” Nina explained.

Riku gasped. “I’m not ready for a Pokemon yet! Please not now!” “But when? Will you be afraid forever?” Nina asked, kneeling down to pet Growly. Riku sighed. “I guess not. But I’m not ready yet.” “If you weren’t ready, then why did you agree to come with me on the journey?” Nina asked. “I’d be very worried about you! And I want to get over my fear.” Riku said.

“I can’t believe that it’s been over ten years since the accident and your feelings on Pokemon changed.” Nina said as they walked towards the laboratory. “Has it been that long?” Riku asked. “Yeah I mean your sixteen now and you were six when it happened. Wow, I can’t believe I remember it.” Nina laughed. Riku smiled. “It’s been a long time too since you found Growlithe.” “It has. I was like ten when I found it. The poor thing was attacked by those rotten Squritle and Wooper.” Riku laughed. “I guess that’s why you hate water Pokemon.”

The two approached the laboratory that rested on a small hill. It’s been four years since Professor Pine replaced Professor Oak when he retired. The two girls gasped when they saw a large window broken, like someone threw a Geodude through the glass. Nina and Riku ran to the front door to see Officer Jenny asking one of Professor Pine’s assistants, Richard, some questions.

“Hey Richard, what happened here?” Nina asked as she approached the man with the white lab coat and spiky green hair. “Oh, Nina and Riku. Some kid broke in and stole a Pokemon and Pokedex. Oh I hope the cops find that kid before Professor Pine comes back.” Richard said as he sighed deeply. “Professor Pine isn’t here?” Riku asked. “He had to go to Viridian City to buy some equipment for a new machine we’re making. He should be back soon.” Richard said. “Nina, I thought you already had a Pokemon?” “I do. I need a Pokedex and Riku here needs both a Pokemon and Pokedex.”

“I guess in the meantime we could help you find the thief. Do you have any idea what he looks like?” Riku asked. “Let’s see…this is what Officer Jenny gave me from the surveillance camera.” Richard said after searching through his pockets and giving Nina a photo. Nina gasped. “I know this boy! It’s Grant! He lives two blocks away from me. Why would he steal a Pokemon when Professor Pine would gladly give him one?” Nina wondered. “Who knows…I want you to find him and make him bring it back.” Richard said.

Nina smiled. “Don’t worry. Riku and I will find Grant and make him give the stolen Pokemon back.”
