Chapter 5

“Do you love me?”
Lance frowned through the videophone - he knew when Ash would call home so he was always there, but when he wasn't, he was perfecting his trainer persona in Celadon. “What kind of question is that, Ash?”
Ash hesitated, and than a voice on the other end said, “That's enough kid.” Then he saw a man behind the screen, a man with long greasy hair and snaggle teeth, and a wild look in his eyes.
“If you don't deliver ten grand alone tonight at Cerulean Cape, you're going to be one kid short. Don't even think about calling the police, because we're watching you”
That was to be expected. The children of gym leaders and such were always in danger… as were the gym leaders themselves. He wondered how Ash had gotten into the mess, than shrugged. That night, he was there waiting, and the man came, and as he grabbed the money, it fried him.
He had filled the bag with cash all right, but it was also laced with electric wiring just waiting for a stray touch. And unlike him, the kidnapper had not been wearing insulated gloves. Fool!
He heard the sound of bullets and smirked. Well, they could try all they liked, but he would not be taken down so easily. He dipped a finger in blood and traced out a symbol in his hand, than smirked.
There were simultaneous cries of pain from several spots around the area. Slipping on his night vision goggles he scanned the area. There…
Ash flung himself into his father's arms. “Father…”
“How did they get you? I thought…”
“They hit me over the head with a baseball bat while I was walking down the road. I was too busy reading to see them.” The boy flushed. “I think they took my pokemon away.”
“Did they…?”
Ash shivered. “No!”
Seeing burns on some of the men, Lance smirked. That explained a lot. < Thank you. >
< My pleasure. I did try… >
< How are your pokemon? >
A frown. < My Ninetails and Arcanine are dead, but they took down most of them. That is why there were so few kidnappers. I fear that leaves Ash with only Rapidash and Flareon to guard him, and if there is another assault like this…. >
< There will not be. I'll cast the protections on him. Don't you think it odd though? >
< That you need the protective spells? Yes! He's the child of two guardians, and he ought to have at least basic magic… >
Lance's eyes widened. < What if his magic is being used elsewhere. >
< You mean… >
< Yes. Even if we know he did not conceive, there are still ways. >
< Damn them! >
If there were ways to reproduce asexually, then that would defeat the purpose and… he would die.
< I will not allow this! > Lance snapped. He turned to see Ash, who had fainted away in his arms after the shock of last night. < I'll bring him into the realm. >

They lay him down and combined their powers, but to no avail. The bud had begun, small but vicious, soon, the child would consume the guardian and there would be nothing left. He was being devoured from the inside out.
“They planned this.” Charlotte realized in horror. “We made him with our magic. Our magic can no longer affect him.”
“Then there is no way out.”
“And if we die, he is in charge.”
“We cannot allow that, and yet…”
“And yet we cannot allow him to live, but there is only one way for him to die.”
“We would have to allowed Missingno to consume him, but that would destroy the realm even then.”
“They have woven their trap well, this time.” Charlotte stroked Moltres's feathers as she spoke. “I applaud Serebii's cunning.”
Lance sighed. “Father will not be pleased, but we know what must happen.”
“We might as well…”
“Take down as many of them as we can while we can.” Lance's reply was feral. “This is how we fight.”
She nodded. A snap of her fingers, and an entire island was wiped out, hundreds of thousands of voices silenced in an instant.
He did the same. And so it continued, until the pokemon islands were all destroyed. The rest of the world could stay, because they had done their duty. This was the way to protect, to save them from destruction slow and painful later. At least it was only a single twinge of pain once.
It was finished.
They saw the walls rise around them before they were locked in, and as for the third, he never woke from his sleep, until it was time for rebirth.
