Chapter 5: There's a reason why it's a dream
Ash smiled as he combed his hair.
“Another date?”
“Nope, but we're going to watch the league championships together.” Ash said.
“Good luck dear!”
Ash nodded. “Okay mom, I'll be back soon!”
Karen and Sabrina watched as he zipped out the door.
“Do you think he recovered?” Sabrina inquired.
< You know dear, I believe so. Even if not, he likes it here. I can tell these things, dear. >
< Oh. >
< So just don't tease him too much. >
Sabrina blinked. * How did mom know? I thought I was shielding my thoughts? *
Ash watched the stars fly by as he and Catelyn sat on a blanket with the remains of a picnic lunch near their feet.
“What to do?”
“What do you mean, Cat?”
Catelyn turned to look at him. “My parents,” Here she winced “Decided to affiance me to someone.”
“What…”
“I'm engaged.”
Ash jumped up. “What? When!”
“Yesterday night.”
Ash paled. “No…”
“Yes. He's hideous. Ten years older than me. And his name is,” Catelyn paused here. “_Lieutenant_ Surge. He's some gym leader from a far-off island.”
“What are you going to do, Cat? Run away?”
Catelyn smiled. “That was a very pretty story, Ash. I believe so. But there's a way to thwart them also.”
From her sleeve, she pulled out a vial filled with purple sparkling liquid.
From her sleeve, she pulled out a vial filled with purple sparkling liquid.
“Activate special ability…”
Ash watched in horror as she drank it down.
A purple glow surrounded her. When it cleared, she stared back at Ash with a sorrowful expression on her face.
“I'm sorry…”
Ash blinked. “Was it poisonous?” He asked as he supported her head, worried as she crumpled, literally.
“No.”
“But…”
Catelyn suddenly stiffed slightly, before relaxing again. Her blue eyes flashed once, before they were swirled through with a deep crimson color.
Glowing red eyes…
That wasn't all though. Cat stood up, and from the posture, Ash could see the other changes.
“Cat… what have you done…”
The girl he had known had been replaced by this stranger with ruby eyes, eyes the color of fresh-spilled blood.
The voice that carried an answer over to him was sorrowful, but even then the change in voice should not have been so profound.
“I'm sorry….”
“No…” Ash repeated, horrified denial. But as much as he didn't want to see it, he could.
Dragonite flew away, and tears splattered on the hard concrete.
Sabrina found him, still huddled on the sidewalk, when she grew worried at the late hour. He wouldn't talk.
He just stared at nothing with the same blank eyes, as his pokemon nudged him with worried looks.
< What happened to you, little brother? > Sabrina asked, but all she got in response was a wave of pain mixed with betrayal and even anger.
Confused, Karen came in to investigate, after Sabrina had failed. Ash sat by his window, staring outside.
He didn't answer when she asked him what was wrong.
He just kept staring.
It was a few weeks later when he finally snapped out of it.
“Cat… is dead.”
Morty looked confused. “What do you mean she's dead? Her soul hasn't passed the gates to the realm of death.”
“Cat doesn't exist anymore.” Ash corrected himself.
“Ash, what happened that day? Her parents are frantic!”
“She didn't want to get married…”Ash whispered, as if in a dream. “She had to get away in any way she could.”
Morty frowned. “She ran away?”
“Close enough. She told me she was considering it.” Ash reported obediently. “But I don't think they'll find her.”
He didn't tell the last part of the secret.
Potions weren't supposed to be dangerous.
They were supposed to be healing items.
Who knew?
He had known, as soon as the changes made themselves known. Catelyn was gone. Mind maybe still there, but not the body.
It was true; they would never find her now.
Because, she wasn't real anymore...
He wouldn't tell her secret to anyone.
He watched quietly as they scoured the area. He tried to find her via telepathy, but his efforts failed. Sabrina tried, and so did their parents, but with the same result.
Two months later, Ash found the trainer named Lance.
He knew.
But he understood why she had done it. Desperation seized upon an individual can cause climatic changes.
Lance was quiet and subdued, but he didn't have to talk. No explanations were needed.
Ash just wondered when everything would go back to normal, and hoped it would actually come to pass.
