Taka watched the pavement pass under his feet as he walked. The noise from the street and the sound of Fuji's soft humming were the only things stopping him from wandering completely into the forest of his own thoughts.

"Taka-san, is there something wrong?" Fuji asked, stopping to take hold of Taka's wrist gently. Taka stopped dead in his tracks at the light touch.

"It's just…" Taka struggled for the right words for a moment. "It's just, I'm so happy I finally beat Oishi but I'm sad too, because I've only been able to do it once. It bothers me that I might not be able to offer Oishi a rematch if he wants it. That might be the last time I play him." Taka looked to the pavement and then kicked at a small pebble he saw there. "I'm going to miss tennis a little, I think."

"That's not surprising," Fuji said. "It's been important to you all through junior high. Tennis is what you've been using to evolve for the past three years. It's been your outlet."

"That's true," Taka admitted. He stared at the place where Fuji's fingers rested against his wrist. "Although, it almost feels like I'm being left behind."

Taka looked up to where sunlight peaked through the buildings. Fuji let out a low chuckle that left him feeling embarrassed.

"To us, it feels like you're the one leaving us behind to follow your dreams," Taka sucked in a loud, large breath as Fuji's fingers tangled with his. " Dreams we're not a part of.”

Their hands hung between them, palm to palm with their fingers intertwined. Fuji tugged on his hand and they started to walk again.

"We-"Taka paused to clear his throat and lick his lips. "We could make a promise."

"A promise? What kind of promise?" Fuji asked. His smile was soft but he was staring off into the distance now. Taka only saw a building and too bright sunlight. He wondered what Fuji saw and if it was completely different. Taka tried not to flex his fingers or let his hand squirm. A part of him was glad he didn't have to look Fuji in the eye when he spoke but he also wanted to see the entirety of Fuji's expression. He felt torn between the two opposing feelings, but that was the effect Fuji had on him.

"We could promise to play a match once a month. Meet up, have fun playing tennis and maybe-" Taka paused to swallow convulsively, "then maybe I could make wasabi sushi for you."

"Don't you think you'll be a bit tired of making sushi though?" Fuji asked, he pulled his gaze away from the horizon and gave Taka a beaming smile.

"Not if it was for you," Taka blushed and hurried on. "But we could always go somewhere else too."

"That sounds almost like a date," Fuji observed.

"Yeah, I guess," Taka mumbled.

"Well Taka-san, if it's a date, don't you think we should do it once a week instead of once a month?"

"Yeah! Er… yes," Taka felt himself go pink.

Fuji stopped and looked him in the eye. Taka moved forward, unsure if it was of his own volition, until soft bangs were brushing his lips. Fuji tilted his head back; there was something about the look in Fuji's eyes that made Taka feel bold and terrified at the same time. Taka shifted. They were both moving really slowly, or so quickly time was lost. A honking horn had Taka dropping Fuji's hand and springing away from him.

Fuji frowned. Taka felt his stomach drop to his knees.

"It's my sister."

Taka let out a small sigh of relief when he realized Fuji was directing his gaze past him. Fuji stepped towards the car and Taka found himself speaking before he thought about what he was saying.

"You could come to my house for dinner."

"Wasabi sushi?" Fuji asked, the frown replaced by a half smile.

"Sure." Taka smiled.

Fuji smiled fully in response and walked over to the car. Taka put his hands in his pockets and waited.

"Taka-san, are we going to do our homework together?"

Taka nodded and watched Fuji smile while speaking to his sister. He could hear Fuji laugh a little and felt himself relax.

"Let's go," Fuji said as he pushed away from the car and came to stand next to Taka.

This time it was Taka that reached out and intertwined their fingers. They walked to Taka's house together, hand in hand.
