Summary: Taka loves fireworks more than anything.
Ever since he was very young, ever since the first time he could ever remember seeing them, Taka had loved fireworks.
When he was younger he liked them because they were loud, brightly coloured and only lasted for a few short seconds. They sparkled and shimmered out of reach. He used to dream he could catch one before it burst in the sky, and watching it explode in his cupped hands, hoarding it all to himself. Age and knowledge had taught him that his dream was not only impossible or impractical, but down right dangerous. Although he was known to let sparks from a sparkler tickle his palm when he got the rare opportunity to play with one.
As he grew older he began to appreciate more than just the fireworks themselves. He grew to love the mob mentality, the feeling of a crowd out in the night, bent on delight. He liked the hush that would settle over the hoard as a shrill whistle would announce the rise of the first firework. That first explosion was always the best because it was always followed by the greatest sound of collective enchantment and awe. And then everyone would hold their breath as they waited for the next one to light up the sky.
Fireworks could tell a story if the technicians were really talented. A good hook to start, something small but impressive that could be built on or around, with a strong middle and a thrilling closing that burned into the eyes of the people that saw it. If the show was exceptional it was discussed for days after, sometimes even referred to the next time a festival promising a fireworks display approached.
As Taka made his way through junior high he made a point of watching any fireworks displays alone. Before the display began he fidgeted and sulked in a childish manner that he didn't want to subject other people to. During the display he always felt slightly giddy, as if he wanted to clutch at someone, touch and gesture to them wildly about what he was seeing. His heart would feel like it was expanding in his chest, ready to explode with his happiness and love for what was happening around him. After the display he would walk home because he was always unbearably happy and animated. Taka couldn't imagine smiling any wider than he did after he watched fireworks. He would use the walk to calm down and bring his enthusiasm to a manageable level. Taka thought that after watching fireworks, he might even be worse than when he was in burning mode.
This was why Taka couldn't understand how he ended up sitting on Fuji 's roof, the two of them waiting to watch fireworks together. He kept his hands fisted in front of him and watched the sky. He wasn't sure how he would react when the fireworks would start. He doubted he could shock Fuji, but there was a first time for everything as the saying went.
"Taka," Fuji began, then paused. Taka knew Fuji was hesitating because he was staring resolutely forward. It wasn't that Taka didn't want to look Fuji in the eye, it was simply that he couldn't. He needed to clearly see the first of the fireworks. "Taka, I think we need to discuss something."
Taka shook his head and kept his gaze fixed on the night sky. Taka could feel rather than see the frown Fuji gave him.
"Taka, is there something wrong?"
Take shook his head again. He /refused/ to miss the first firework.
"Taka?" Fuji said, again. Any other time Taka would have taken Fuji's tone as a warning. Today however, he was waiting for fireworks. "Taka."
Fuji grabbed his chin and forced Taka to turn his head. Taka was taken aback at the angry expression on Fuji's face. Fuji's glaze flitted away from his for a moment before returning to his face. It was less angry than it had been, but there was something there that looked much more complicated.
The first firework screamed as it soared through the sky and lit up Fuji's face in greenish light. The light reflected in his eyes and made him look possessed. Taka's body sorted out the circumstances before his mind did; the two of them alone on the roof, watching fireworks, Fuji looking serious and determined and staring at him in a measuring way, an expectant way. Before Fuji's expression had a chance to change, and more importantly, before the next firework went up, he kissed Fuji on the lips. Taka was sure he was bad at it, he simply forced his way into Fuji's mouth and pretended he knew what he was doing, sliding his tongue in a way that he thought he should. He kept his eyes open so he could see the colours of the fireworks tint Fuji's face. He broke the kiss, grabbed Fuji around the waist and dragged the smaller boy to settle between his legs. He arranged them so they were both facing towards the fireworks; Fuji's back pressed to his chest. Taka put his arms around Fuji's middle, his hands twinging a little as he rested his chin on Fuji's shoulder.
"We can talk after the fireworks. Just watch them with me, please Fuji?" Fuji nodded, the movement causing hairs to tickle Taka's chin. Taka found himself tightening his hold as more fireworks burst in the sky around them. Taka pressed a kiss to the shell of Fuji's ear. He breathed in the smell of his friend, who after that kiss under the brightly shimmering lights was now certainly his boyfriend, and thought that he smelled faintly of gunpowder. "Let me know if I hold you too tight."
Fuji let out a small laugh before resting his head on Taka's shoulder.
"I will."
