Chapter 1: split decisions
Tensai; prodiogy, Fuji Syuusuke was well known by those names and more. Women and men found him very attractive and mysterious. When on the tennis court he was admired by many and envied by more.
In the classroom it was the same as well, though he didn't think he was a great person to look up to since he never really paid attention while in class anyway. But even though that was the case, Fuji loved all the attention and admiration he received. But he still found himself feeling really lonely. But considering he wouldn't let anyone get close to him, he felt it was his entire fault anyway. Why dwell on something if you were the very cause of it?
Fuji had found himself saying that quite often and soon began to believe that. Even if the person had seemed so right for him, Fuji always pushed them away. Most would look at it seeming that he was afraid of commitment. Or better yet, they would think he was afraid of love. Fuji could not figure out himself why he had the sudden urge to push someone away once they got too close. He had talked to his brother about his problem and his brother had simply told him the truth.
"How can you be afraid of something you've never experienced?"
That was true; Fuji had never experienced falling in love so why did he push it away every time it was so close?
Maybe in the back of his mind, he felt that, that person wasn't right for him. But whatever the case, he always found himself breaking yet another heart. He felt sorry but how could he deny himself the feeling that he was feeling. If he stayed to not hurt them then he would hurt himself. So once again he had met someone. But this person he wasn't going to take on as his lover, he was just going to continue being friends with him. But as the days went by he found himself wanting to take back what he had promised himself. When he met Eiji Kikumaru, he knew that he was someone he really wanted to be with. But he didn't want to hurt someone who had become one of his close friends. And Fuji knew it was something special about Eiji, because Fuji never opened up to anyone. But for some reason he found himself opening up little by little to the genki red head.
Eiji was different in more ways than Fuji had at first expected. When he had first met Eiji, he was at tennis practice after first coming to Seigaku. He couldn't help but notice a crowd near the locker room and wondered what the commotion could have been. After gathering his things he walked over and found an energetic red head telling jokes and making everyone laugh.
After watching him for a couple of seconds he realized that it was Eiji kikumaru. Fuji had noticed him during the first two weeks of school but he had not yet spoken to the red head. Eiji, was different from the type of people Fuji usually associated himself with. He went for more calm, cool and collected people. Eiji was a lot livelier and he seemed like a fun person. He was about to walk away when he heard someone call out to him.
"Hoi Fuji! Did you practice hard today." Asked a person as they placed their arm on top of his shoulder.
Fuji was surprised as he looked over at the person and he was no other than Eiji. Considering that they hadn't spoken yet and Eiji was addressing him as if they had been friends for months.
"Kikumaru-kun, thank you for asking. Yes I did have a great practice how about you?"
"It was ok, but considering I had to run extra laps let's just say I got more of a workout then I wanted." Eiji replied as he began to laugh.
"Well if you weren't busy goofing off you wouldn't have had to run laps."
Eiji chuckled once again as he put both of his hands behind his head. "Well ok I will admit that it was kind of my fault he replied grinning. But usually the captain has a much better sense of humor. Maybe he was just in a bad mood today?"
"Maybe." Fuji answered not sure if he could say more. "Well.." Eiji began. "It was nice talking to you Fuji; i'll see you tomorrow morning at practice."
Fuji nodded. "Yes it was nice talking to you too, see you tomorrow morning."

Fuji arrived home an hour later. As he unlocked his door and opened it, he noticed his younger brother Yuuta sitting on the couch.
"Oh hello Yuuta, I was looking for you after school so we could have walked home together."
Yuuta looked up from the TV at him and mumbled as he turned his eyes back to the TV.
"Aniki I'm not a child I could walk home myself from now on."
Fuji walked into the house and shut the door behind him. He then sat down his tennis bag and walked over and sat down beside his younger brother. After watching TV with him for ten minutes Fuji grabbed some of the popcorn Yuuta was eating and turned to him.
"You know Yuuta; I think we should go out for dinner tonight. Since oneesan and our parents gone for tonight, and there's nothing in the fridge, it would be best we do."
Yuuta looked over at Fuji and shrugged. "I guess we could go out and eat since there's nothing here to eat."
Fuji smiled happily as he stood up and clicked off the TV.
"Hey, I was still watching that!" Yuuta protested.
"Yuuta I think you should go get ready. I've already thought of the perfect place we could go out to."
Yuuta stared at his brother and let out a heavy sigh. "You had this planned from the started did you?"
Fuji didn't reply as he walked up the stairs to his room. He was really excited to be able to spend some one on one time with his brother.

"Nya Oishi are you done with your homework yet, I want to go to the movies now." Eiji asked Oishi Syuichiroh for the fifth time that night.
"Eiji, please be patient, I have just a little more English to go and I'm done. And besides the movie doesn't start until 8pm tonight." Oishi turned and looked at the clock on the wall. "And it's only 5pm. We have more than enough time to get there."
Eiji pouted as he flopped down on his bed. Oishi and he had made plans to go and see a new horror movie that had came out. Though Eiji easily had nightmares, he still really wanted to see the movie. And as safe keep, he had asked Oishi to spend the night at his house so if he woke up from a nightmare, his friend would be there to comfort him.
Eiji grinned to himself; Oishi always comforted him when he needed it. They were really close friends, and even to an extent you could say they were best friends. Though Eiji wanted to be more, he wasn't sure about Oishi. Eiji had always had a slight crush on Oishi and to be honest he never once thought of himself as being gay. He liked girls too, but it was just something about Oishi that attracted Eiji to him. Eiji had tried several times to let Oishi know about how he felt, but it was like Oishi was completely oblivious to the hints.
Eiji knew Oishi was smart, so he had to have noticed the hints that were being put out there. Or maybe he just wanted to ignore them. Though that was possibly the case, Eiji didn't want to think about it. Eiji and Oishi just fit right together, now all he had to do is make Oishi see that too.
After waiting for another hour for Oishi to continue his homework, Oishi finally was done.
Eiji couldn't control his energy for any longer. When Oishi stood up he quickly pounced him hugging him tightly.
"Nya oishi's finally done!"
Oishi chuckled slightly. "Yes eiji i'm done, are you ready to go now?"
"Hoi! been ready! let's go."
"Wait Eiji..."
Eiji turned to Oishi and looked at him wondering why he would stop him.
"Before we go to the movies, i want to go to this great resturant that i spotted a couple of days ago."
Eiji cocked his head to the side and looked at Oishi inquisitively. "Nya, what resturant Oishi?"
Oishi smiled as he slightly nudged Eiji's chin. "Don't worry Eiji, you'll love it. It's only a chinese resturant. But i heard the food is really great there."
"Okay!" Eiji replied energetically. "Well Oishi let's go! don't want to be late."
00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
Eiji and Oishi arrived at the resturant twenty minutes later. When they arrived, the waiter had sat them down and taken their orders. The two sat there waiting for there food, but Eiji seemed kind of antsy.
"Nya Oishi?"
Oishi looked up from the menu he was reading just to past time and arced his eyebrow at Eiji curiously.
"Yes eiji?"
"Hoi...this resturant is nice and all but i would have prefered we stopped and got a cheeseburger. I like chinese food and all but, you know i rarely like to eat it."
Oishi laughed slightly. "Eiji eating fastfood all the time isn't healthy for you. All that processed food is hard to digest."
Eiji sigh lightly as he looked at Oishi. "It's easy for you to say that because you're a heathfood junkie. Me, i don't have to worry about getting out of shape. I have high metabolism!"
Oishi laughed. "Eiji it's not about gaining weight, it's about just taking care of yourself."
Eiji nodded and didn't say more. He sat at the table looking around at other guest when he spotted Fuji and his brother.
"Look Oishi, there's Fuji and his brother! let's go and say hello."
Before Oishi could protest, he was dragged over to the Fuji brother's table by Eiji.
Fuji had been sitting having dinner with his brother when suddenly he heard a familar voice.
"Hoi Fujiko what's up."
Fuji blinked twice before looking up at the approaching figures. Fujiko? he asked himself.
"Nya Fujiko I didn't expect you to be here."
Fuji looked up at Eiji and back to his brother. His brother was looking at Eiji weirdly. He probably was wondering where the name Fujiko came from as well.
"Na..kikumaru ku..."
"Nya Fujiko just call me Eiji now! we're friends!"
Fuji looked at Eiji amused and began again.
"Eiji me and Yuuta here are just having dinner."
Eiji blinked twice before turning to Yuuta. "Hoi! I'm Kikumaru Eiji." Eiji said to Yuuta as he waved smiling at him.
Yuuta blushed and looked down at his plate.
"Yo...yoroshiku."
Syuusuke chuckled lightly. "Eiji, Yuuta's a bit shy so don't mind him."
Syuusuke then turned to Oishi and nodded. "Konnichiwa Oishi."
"Konnichwa Fuji. Sorry to bother you but Eiji pulled me over here before i could even protest. I didn't want to disturb you and your brother's dinner. But Eiji can be a bit persistant."
Fuji smiled. "No problem we were getting ready to leave anyway." Fuji and Yuuta stood up as Fuji grabbed the bill, he turned to Eiji and Oishi.
"Nya Fuji, you're not going home! you and your brother are going to the movies with me and Oishi."
Yuuta blinked suddenly paying attention to everyone again. "We are?" he asked as he looked at Syuusuke. "Aniki, you didn't mention a movie as well."
Fuji looked over at Eiji and was about to decline his offer when something told him not too. He then turned to Yuuta and gave him an apologetic smiled. "Gomen yuuta, it must had slipped my mind"
Yuuta looked as if he was going to say something but he kept it to himself. "Ok fine what movie are we going to see."
They had all decided on the exact movie that Oishi and Eiji originally were going to see. It turns out Yuuta and Fuji were highly interested in seeing that movie as well. After arriving in the theater and finding their seats, Oishi had offered to go out and buy everyone something to snack on. Fuji had politely declined but Eiji and Yuuta insisted that they needed something to snack on while watching a movie. Oishi wanted to object but since he had offered it was nothing he could do. Though they had just gotten done with dinner no one should have wonder anything as far as he thought.
After getting some snacks and watching previews of other movies, the lights finally dimed and the opening to the movie began. Fuji couldn't help but notice out the corner of his eye that Eiji had laid his head on Oishi's shoulder and Oishi had kissed his forehead. Hmmm I wonder if they're together. Fuji thought to himself.
Considering that he couldn't picture Oishi with another man amazed Fuji. He was actually cuddling with Eiji in a movie theater and didn't seem to care if anyone saw them.
Through out the movie Fuji's attention wasn't on the screen, it was at the couple beside him. He would notice Eiji whispering something to Oishi and then Oishi either grining or laughing softly. He noticed Eiji feeding popcorn to Oishi. He even noticed Eiji had kissed Oishi on the cheek once or was it twice, he didn't remember. But something came out as strange to Fuji, everything seemed so…one sided. Oishi wasn't doing those things back to Eiji. It was like maybe, their relationship other than friendship was one sided. Fuji was interested and wanted to know more about their relationship.
Suddenly without him noticing, the lights began to brighten and he realized that the movie was over.
“Hey aniki, that movie was really good! We have got to get this when it comes out on dvd.” Yuuta exclaimed excitedly.
Fuji's attention diverted back to his brother. Yuuta rarely showed emotions. He always made it seem like he was always angry but Fuji knew otherwise. But it was rare to see Yuuta show this side of himself out In public.
“Na..yuuta, when it comes out I'll make sure I buy it for you since you like it so much.”
Yuuta looked at Fuji surprised. “A..arigatou aniki.”
Fuji chuckled.
Suddenly Oishi walked over to Fuji.
“Hey Fuji, could I have a favor from you?”
Fuji looked at Oishi and smiled. “Sure, what is it?”
“Well…” he began looking very apologetic. “I got a call from my mother and I was told I would have to come home tonight. I was suppose to stay the night at Eiji's but I can't. And I was told I have to come directly home. Would you mind walking Eiji home for me?”
Fuji nodded. “Sure Oishi.”
Oishi put his hands together as if praying and smiled gratefully at fuji. “Thank you, I promise I'll pay you back for going out of your way.”
“No need Oishi, me and Eiji are friends, it's no problem…really.”
After Oishi had left, Yuuta left soon after stating he had promised to meet some friends from St. Rudolph tonight. Fuji hadn't been told that but he knew his brother had his reasons.
So he was all alone walking Eiji home.
Eiji hadn't spoken a word since they began their walk. But from the look on his face he wasn't in a very good mood.
“Nya Fujiko.” Eiji said as he broke the silence.
“Yes Eiji.” Fuji replied wondering if he was going to finally say what was bothering him.
“I know I befriended you out of the nowhere, but that was because I thought you were a nice person worth getting to know. And right now, I really need a friend, and you're here so…”
“Sure Eiji, you can tell me what's on your mind. Actually I knew something was bothering you but I was going to wait for you to say.”
“Hoi? You knew?”
Fuji chuckled slightly.
“Eiji, it's written all over your face. You seem sad.”
Eiji had never realized that he was that readable and decided to ask Fuji about it later.
“Well…what do you do if you have feelings for someone but you aren't sure they have the same feelings for you?”
I figured that was the case. Fuji thought to himself.
“Well Eiji, it depends. If you don't want to verbally ask you can see it through their actions. If that person likes you, they are going to show it by kissing you or touching you a lot. They will even go out their way for you when they don't even have to. They would take care of you when you need it. It's a number of ways to know if someone likes you back. Or you can just come straight out and ask them.”
Eiji nodded sullenly while he soaked everything in.
“Well…what if that person doesn't like you and you and that person are good friends. You don't want to make things rough so you just wait for them. But you've been waiting for a really long time.”
Fuji's smile faded as he looked over at Eiji's sad face. He was suffering, he was falling for someone whom he had no idea would return his feelings. And all he could do was wait so he wouldn't ruin the friendship. Fuji felt a sudden urge to protect Eiji. Though Oishi wasn't a bad guy, but he needed to give Eiji an answer.
“Na..Eiji, are you talking about Oishi?”
Eiji looked up at Fuji horrified that he had figured it out.
Fuji laughed slightly to lighten the mood. “Don't worry Eiji, I have no problem with it. If you like someone you just do. It shouldn't matter if they are a boy or girl, as long as they make you happy.”
“Nya honto?” Eiji asked as if Fuji could just fix his problem with the snap of his fingers.
“Uh huh.” Fuji replied as he nodded. “But Eiji…not everyone thinks like me gomen.”
“No it's ok Fuji, I know that. I knew you were different that's why I became your friend.”
Fuji nodded. “Well Eiji there is something I can do for you.”
Eiji looked at Fuji curiously as he cocked his head to the side. “Hoi?”
“Well I could approach Oishi for you. I could tell him that I noticed you and him tonight and ask him how he feels about you. And therefore you can get the answer you want without making him feel akward.”
“But…”
“I won't tell him that you wanted to know ok.”
Eiji nodded happily. “Thank you Fuji.” He then suddenly hugged Fuji tightly.
Fuji couldn't help but to smell his hair, which smelled like strawberries. Though he wondered why Eiji used Strawberry shampoo, he still loved the smell. He had to stop himself for reaching up and running his fingers through Eiji's red locks.
“Hoi..Fuji?”
“Yes Eiji?” Fuji replied as Eiji still held onto him.
“Have you ever been with another guy?”
“Yes, quite a few, and I've also been with girls as well.”
“Hoi…” Eiji started as he let go. He then looked at Fuji curiously.
“Hmm?” Fuji asked as he noticed Eiji's expression.
“Nya Fujiko, was it hard?”
Fuji shook his head understanding Eiji's question. “It's only hard if you make it that way.”
Eiji nodded as he looked towards the house they had hugged in front of.
“Well I'm home, thank you for walking me.”
“No problem Eiji.”
“Oyasumi.”
“Oyasumi.”

The next morning Fuji woke up the next morning the sound of his alarm clock. He was not a morning person and hated getting up earlier than needed. But he had told Eiji he would do this favor for him so he was going to get up no matter what. Fuji tried to lean far enough out of his bed to turn off his alarm when he suddenly lost his balanced and fell hard on the floor.
“Damn it.” He cursed to himself.
Suddenly there was a knock on his door. “Aniki, you fell out of the bed again? Maybe you should put your alarm closer so you can reach it.”
Fuji was afraid he would reply back harshly so he didn't bother replying to his brother's remark. Yea he knew he should move it closer but he always refused to. Considering when he was really sleepy he lost all his senses and only thought of sleep.
Fuji got up off the floor and went over to his closet. “Time to get this over with.” He said to himself.
Fuji arrived at Seigaku at around 7:30am. As he got there, he noticed Oishi already on the court practicing. Fuji sometimes showed up early himself to warm up so he wouldn't be really tired when practice came. He walked onto the court and up to Oishi.
“Mind if I warm up with you?” Fuji asked him sleepily.
“Sure.” Oishi replied.
They were positioned on the court when suddenly Oishi stopped when he was about to serve.
“Oh yea Fuji, was Eiji mad last night?”
Fuji looked at Oishi and shook his head.
“Actually no, he was busy talking about how great the movie was. Even though he was afraid of it.”
Fuji knew the conversation was a lie but he could tell Eiji was afraid of the movie. Like Fuji noticed before he was easy to read.
“Na..Oishi. I'm going to come right and ask you because I saw it and I just wanted to know ok?”
“Go right ahead.” Oishi replied without trying to guess what Fuji wanted to know.
“Well last night at the movie I saw you and Eiji…being..close. But I noticed only Eiji were making the moves and not you. Is everything one-sided between you two?”
Oishi looked at Fuji surprised and suddenly dropped the tennis ball without noticing it.
“You…saw us?”
Fuji nodded and couldn't believe Oishi wouldn't have noticed that people could see him. Though the theater was dark, it wasn't impossible to see.
“Na…oishi, I'm not judging, I'm just curious.”
“Well….” Oishi began. “Well..my parents really want me to have a family so I can continue the family name. So…even if I wanted Eiji I couldn't be with him. And even if I wanted to be with Eiji, my parents wouldn't allow it. So therefore everything is pointless. We can only be friends.”
“hmmm…” Fuji replied. “But Oishi, have you told Eiji this?”
“Well I can't, I don't want to hurt him. But at the same time, I feel like I'm leading him on. And I don't want our friendship to suffer just because I can't be with him like…he wants me to.”
Fuji raised his eyebrow. “But I thought you wanted it too?”
Oishi looked down at the ground as if caught in a lie. “Yes and no…I'm not gay..but I can't help but to like Eiji…but…like I said.”
“Ah…so you're using your family as an excuse.”
Oishi suddenly placed his racket under his arm. “Fuji I think that's enough for warming up today ok? I have to go.”
Fuji walked off and decided he would wait for Eiji. This was something he needed to know.
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
When Eiji had arrived, Fuji didn't tell him what Oishi said instead he gave Eiji a lot of attention. They practiced together, and at lunch together. And even at after school practice they practiced together.
Somehow, Eiji kind of figured out what was going on while they were walking home together that evening.
“Hoi… He doesn't feel the same way does he?”
Fuji looked over at Eiji and placed his arm around him. “Oishi is torn between being with you or pleasing his family. And he feels that it's his duty to please his family. But he still wants to be your friend Eiji, that's why he couldn't tell you. He was afraid that you would get angry or upset and stop being his friend.”
Eiji looked at Fuji and sighed sadly. “Nya…I knew it.” He sniffled softly as he walked alittle ahead of Fuji.
Fuji instinctively walked up to Eiji and hugged him. As soon as he did Eiji began to cry in his arms.
“Nya Fuji I know I should be happy me and Oishi are friends but I think I was falling in….”
“Shhhh…” Fuji said in his ear.
You still have him in your life, but it's just not the way you desire. Trust me Eiji you will find someone else who you will love as much or even more. And they will love you back the same.
Eiji didn't reply back. He just cried.
End chapter
Author notes: Ok first off Fuji falling out of the bed was something that literally popped into my head when I wrote for him reaching for his alarm. It's OOC but doesn't that seem cute but clumsy. Something you so wouldn't expect from Fuji you know. I'll from now on make that his bad habit since he's not a morning person lol. I know there aren't a lot of fuji/Eiji fanfictions out there but I think they are adorable together and so I decided to write one about them! i hope you enjoyed the chapter!
And another thing, this story doesn't follow any specific storyline from the anime.
