Summary: Eiji and Oishi have a fight.
Eiji sighed and watched the clouds drift by. Usually just lying on the roof of the school made him feel better. Today it made him feel like he was avoiding something, which he was.
Oishi was mad at him. They had fought the night before over something stupid. But it had been Oishi's fault. Oishi had accused /him/! He made it sound like everything was Eiji's fault and hadn't taken any responsibility, even when Oishi had been the one to provoke the argument. Eiji ground his teeth. He sat up and flailed in frustration.
"Damn it! Stupid Oishi!"
"Ah, I take it you and Oishi had a fight then. I wondered why he was wandering around by himself looking so depressed," Fuji said.
Eiji started and whipped his head around. Fuji smiled at him from the doorway to the roof.
"Nyah. Serves him right." Eiji pouted and gave Fuji a mutinous look.
"Oh really?" Fuji said. He came to sit next to Eiji. "Hmmm, now what could Oishi have done to deserve to be by himself when he would rather be with Eiji?"
"He was being annoying!" Eiji whined. "He came over last night to help me study but he got mad at me about some of my test scores. He's not my mother or my father. He shouldn't be lecturing me like that."
"Hmmm. He lectured did he?" Fuji smiled and stretched on the roof next to where Eiji was sitting. "How very like Oishi when he's agitated."
"It's none of his business anyway." Eiji sulked and tugged at the hem of his pants.
"Oishi might think everything to do with you is his business, but he is very much in love so we have to forgive him for his ego, I suppose." Fuji tapped his index finger thoughtfully against his lips and looked at Eiji out of the corner of his eye, obviously fighting a smile.
"Stop trying to make me feel guilty for being mad," Eiji grouched and tangled his finger in the hem of his pants.
"We have to wonder why Oishi was so quick to anger though, don't we? It's unusual for him." Fuji said thoughtfully.
Eiji tried to pretend he wasn't watching Fuji hopefully and continued to toy with the hem of his pant leg. He really did want to know why Oishi had been so angry but he didn't want to sit through a lecture from his boyfriend when he was given the same one by his parents on a regular basis.
"Oishi is applying at a lot of different high schools, isn't he?" Fuji asked.
Eiji's head snapped up.
"Yeah, he's applying to six, but I think there's only one that he really wants to get into," Eiji admitted. He frowned. He absolutely hated talking about high school. It meant that he had to acknowledge that they would be finishing junior high soon and leaving Seigaku behind. Eiji usually considered himself the type of person that looked forward, ready to face new challenges rather than dwelling on the past. But lately he had been feeling obstinate. He didn't want to think about going to school somewhere other than Seigaku. It made him feel lonely.
"Are you applying to them too?" Fuji asked.
Eiji snorted.
"No, they're all schools that you need high grades to get in. My grades aren't good enough. I'm too stupid," Eiji muttered.
"That's not true, Eiji. You're very smart. You just don't like studying because it requires you to sit still," Fuji said and smiled. Fuji sat up and rested his chin in his hand. "I hope Tezuka and I end up in the same high school. I want to keep playing tennis with him. I don't think I would like going to a school without him in it."
Eiji pressed his lips together and thought about going to a school that Oishi didn't attend. He thought about not seeing his boyfriend every day, not playing tennis with him and not winning with him. Eiji drew his knees to his chest and rocked on his backside.
"Do you really think I could get into the same high schools as Oishi?" Eiji asked the question slowly. He had never thought that he could, but if Fuji thought he had a chance it was worth it to try, wasn't it?
"Yes." Fuji gave him a supportive smile. "And that was probably what Oishi was thinking also."
"Well, he could have said it a little better. He could have just said he wanted to go to high school with me, rather than lecturing me," Eiji said. He huffed and folded his arms over his chest. He shook his head and glared up at the blue sky.
"But don't you want to talk to him about it?" Fuji asked. "Right now?"
Eiji tried to sit still; to pretend the idea wasn't bouncing around in his head and demanding to be voiced. It was a wasted effort. He jumped up, grabbed his bag and bolted for the stairs. Coming to a screeching halt at the door, Eiji turned around but before he could even ask the question Fuji was answering it.
"He was out by the tennis courts." Fuji's eyes were closed and he gave Eiji a dismissive wave as he settled in for a nap.
"Thanks Fuji!" Eiji cried before crossing the threshold to the stairs.
Eiji was panting by the time he made it to the tennis courts. Oishi was sitting with his back against one of the fences, eating lunch alone. Fuji had been right, he looked depressed. Eiji absolutely hated the look on Oishi's face. He slapped a bright smile onto his own face and bounced over to drop down beside his boyfriend.
"Because I am very smart," Eiji said, grinning as he waggled a finger at Oishi with his chest puffed out, "I figured out that the reason Oishi was so upset yesterday was because he wants me to try my best to get into the same high school as him. So we can continue to play tennis together."
"Yeah," Oishi smiled but cast his gaze downward.
"Nyah?" Eiji paused. "Was I wrong? That wasn't the reason Oishi was mad?"
Oishi sighed and continued to pick at his lunch. Eiji squirmed impatiently.
"Oishi? Oishi, can you explain it to me plainly then? If that's not the reason, then I don't understand." Eiji said quietly. He suddenly felt uncomfortable, like something bad was about to happen. His lunch had become a solid lump in his stomach.
"I-I was jealous." Oishi admitted. "About the Junior Invitational."
"But you said it was great! You said you were proud of me for being chosen to be on the team." Eiji jumped to his feet and stomped his foot. "You said you'd cheer as loud as you could for me."
"It wasn't about you being a member and me not being one." Oishi ground out. He bit his lip and looked back to his lunch. "It was about your game with Oshitari."
"You're jealous we lost?" Eiji asked and tapped his foot impatiently.
"No. I was jealous that you taught him our new formation," Oishi said. He had leaned so far over his lunch that Eiji could no longer see his eyes. "I know I shouldn't be because it relies on your strengths, not mine. But I was really jealous. That formation was just for us. I didn't like Oshitari knowing it."
"Oishi, you get jealous over weird things," Eiji declared and moved Oishi's lunch out of the way before straddling his partner's lap. He expected Oishi to get flustered and tell him to get off, but instead the brunet wrapped his arms around Eiji. Oishi pressed his face into Eiji's neck and muttered his apology there.
Eiji pulled back slightly and kissed Oishi soundly. They both smiled as they pulled back. He gave Oishi a few more small kisses on the nose and around his mouth.
"We should stop now. You'll have to get up."
"I will but you'll have to let go of my butt first," Eiji said with a grin.
Oishi turned bright red as he threw his hands away from where they had been tightly gripping Eiji's ass. Eiji's grin grew wider as he stood.
"I wonder if anyone saw us," He snickered and looked around seeing if there was anyone looking shocked or embarrassed. "Fuu. We did something naughty and didn't even get caught. What's the fun in that?"
"Eiji, we're lucky no one saw us." Oishi said. The pink was fading from his face, but he was casting guilty glances in all directions.
"I guess," Eiji said and scuffed the toe of his shoe on the ground. "Oishi, you do want me to go to the same high school as you, right?"
"Yes," Oishi said and smiled. "It's why I offered to tutor you."
"So that way we can still play tennis together all the time. We can still be the Golden Pair." Eiji bounced as he spoke, starting to move towards the school.
"Eiji, can I ask you something?"
"Mhmmm?"
"Would you promise to be my partner forever, that we'll always be the Golden Pair?" Oishi was looking off to the side; his face was pink again.
"Yay! Oishi wants to be with me forever!" Eiji shouted and threw his arms up in the air.
"Not so loud, Eiji," Oishi muttered. Eiji grinned at his boyfriend and didn't even bother pretending he felt any guilt. He was too happy to feel badly about embarrassing Oishi. Actually, Eiji was too happy to even consider being anything less than a complete pain. He caught Oishi's pinky with his own.
"There. It's official. We'll try our hardest to stay the Golden Pair forever."
Oishi smiled at him and shook his head. Eiji could tell he was happy.
"Hey Oishi, since you asked me to be partners forever, does that mean I should tell my family I'm engaged?"
"Eiji!"
Eiji cackled madly and ran away as Oishi continued to sputter in shock.
