"No."
"I figured you'd say that at first. However, I think if you just took a moment to reflect on what I'm proposing, you'd see--"
"I think you should leave."
"Yeah, yeah, no sweat. I'm leaving now. Just... give what I said a thought, okay?"
"Did Syusuke put you up to this?"
"You mean does he know I'm here right now? Nope, not a clue. Does he know what we're talking about? Not unless you tell him. It's just... I know it's something that's been bothering him."
"...It... has...? But why? I've never said anything about--"
"This is Syusuke we're talking about here. You didn't have to say anything, Kunimitsu. He has eyes; so do I."
"So you came to me because...?"
"Listen, none of us are getting any younger. And now that you're out of college and really making a name for yourself... well, like I said. This is something that has bothered him for a while now. And even more, this is something I can do for you both."
"...He never said anything about it to me."
"No, he wouldn't, would he? He's too proud to admit there's something you might want or need that he can't give you."
"All I ever wanted or needed was him; is him."
"Listen...Just... give it some thought. Think it over; talk to Syusuke about it. You know where to reach me."
"Mmm."
*
"Your sister paid me a visit today."
"Oh? That's... nice."
"Mmn."
"And...dare I ask what you two talked about?"
"Ah. She asked me to father her child."
"..."
"Syusuke! Shit, let me get the first aid kit. No, don't use that towel, it's dirty; here, use this one. This looks deep...you might need stitches."
"I'm sorry... I don't think I quite heard you correctly. What did you say you talked about?"
"Yumiko stopped by the office this afternoon, after we met for lunch. She mentioned how it was a shame that there were no decent men left in Tokyo anymore and how she wasn't getting any younger. Then she proceeded to lament how, with both of her *dear* baby brothers being irreparably homosexual, it was a good probability that the Fuji line has met its end unless she took matters into her own hands. However, due to the lack of any quality male that she would even consider attaching herself to, and since it looked as if the Tezuka family line was in danger of meeting the same horrible fate as the Fuji line, she asked if I wouldn't be interested in combining our two families by agreeing to father her child."
"..."
"It was quite an impassioned speech. You should have been there. I almost wished I had a camera to capture it."
"..."
"Syusuke? Wait, Syusuke, where are you going?"
"To commit sibling-o-cide."
*
"You're late."
"I didn't realize we had an appointment."
"Tezuka told you I paid him a visit yesterday?"
"Yes."
"I was expecting you to come barreling down my door last night."
"So sorry to disappoint."
"Now, now, don't even try to take that tone of voice with me, young man."
"...."
"Thirty feels so old. Did you know that?"
"..."
"It's not, when you really sit down and think about it. You're still young, really, when you look at it chronologically in terms of eighty, ninety, a hundred years. But still... I never really thought I'd be where I was at thirty...or where I still am at thirty-six."
"And where's that?"
"A career woman with no husband, no family of her own. Who's far closer to forty than thirty now. It's... a somewhat lonely realization. Want to know another one?"
"Not really."
"I don't think I'd make a very good mother."
"...Then... why would... why did you.... I don't understand. Why did you go to Kunimitsu yesterday? Why did you say those things to him if you--"
"You're still young, Syusuke. Yes, I know, I know there's not there doesn't seem to be much difference between thirty-six and twenty-nine, but there *is* a difference. And... and you're in a good relationship. But it's not perfect, is it?"
"I... I don't know what you mean."
"Come here and sit down for a bit."
"No, I don't want a reading."
"Too bad. Do you see this card? Isn't it pretty?"
"It's very nice, but what does--"
"It's the motherhood card. It's been showing up in almost every spread I've laid out for the past month. At first I thought nothing of it. After all, it wasn't like any of us were in any position to become parents, right? But... well, then I started remembering the summer festival."
"You mean the party at the temple?"
"Mmm... It must be hard on them all. The children and your friends."
"Mmm. But, they're adjusting well."
"Does it bother you?"
"Excuse me?"
"I was watching you, you know. You couldn't take your eyes off of what's his name? Ryoma, right? Your eyes were filled with envy, Syusuke. Every time you looked at him with that baby, you were jealous, weren't you?"
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"And Tezuka... the way he interacted with the little girl and boy..."
"..."
"It's not something I would offer to Yuuta, and it's not something I will offer again, so you better go home and think about it. You're my brother, and I love you, and Tezuka is a good man; he will make a good father... and so will you."
"I...."
"Go home, Syusuke. You're not ready to give me your answer yet. But when you are, you know where to find me."
"Yumiko!"
"..."
"..."
"There's a storm coming. I can hear the wind howling."
"..."
"Talk to you later, Syusuke."
"Ah."
