FRIDAY

Yanagi Renji caught him before morning practice. Inwardly, he cringed, but outwardly he remained interested in retying his tennis shoes.

"You seem preoccupied this morning, Genichirou."

Sanada didn't reply. It wouldn't have mattered if he did or didn't. Yanagi would say what he wanted to say if he had something to say and there wasn't a damn thing Sanada could say or do to stop him, so he didn't bother anymore.

Sanada had come early this morning in the hopes of avoiding this confrontation that he knew would be coming, in the hopes of maybe getting in some private practice time to regain his focus, but it appeared that Yanagi had once again anticipated his movements. He bent to pick up his tennis bag, but a hand on his shoulder stopped him from picking it up.

Yanagi wasn't really one for casual touching, and only engaged in any physical contact when the weight of his smile proved incapable of holding the other party properly attentive.

"Genichirou, please consider your actions carefully. Not for the team," Yanagi went on, "But for yourself and for Akaya. Everyone is concerned; we want you to be happy."

Sanada didn't say anything. He stood a moment later with his tennis bag swung over his shoulder and walked out.

Only, he stopped in the doorway, not looking back, and called, "Renji?"

"Hmm?"

"Warm up with me."

Yanagi's smile was relief-filled. "Ah. I'll be right there, Genichirou."

Sanada nodded and walked out, letting the door bang shut behind him.

*

"It looks like you succeeded, Akaya," a quietly amused voice noted from behind the second year.

Kirihara jumped off the fence where he'd been watching Sanada's practice match against Yagyuu. "Buchou!" he gasped.

Smiling conspiratorially, Yukimura held a finger up to his lips. "Shh. No one else has noticed I'm here yet. Let's see how long we can keep it that way, ne?"

"But--I thought--I mean--" Kirihara finally just snapped his jaw shut and stared at the other teen.

"I'll return to class officially on Monday, yes, but I thought it would be a good idea to stop by beforehand and reacquaint myself with the teachers. So, you've managed to work things out between you two then?"

He turned back to look at where Yukimura was watching Sanada score another point. It was still a close match, but then most games between his sempai were close.

Niou came up from behind and wrapped his arms around Yukimura's waist, burying his face against the other boy's neck. "It's good to see you back here finally," the doubles player mumbled.

Yukimura smiled. "It's good to finally be back," he responded, running fingers lightly down Niou's spine.

The pop-crack of gum heralded Marui's arrival as the redheaded teen plopped against the fence. "If I'd a known you were coming by today I'd a brought you some cake."

"You would've eaten it by lunch time and been hyper all throughout Japanese," his partner retorted affectionately, nodding greetings towards Yukimura. "Welcome back."

"Shows what you know," Marui spat, poking Jackal. "I had History after lunch today. Besides, I'll just have to bring extra tomorrow. You're coming tomorrow, right, Buchou?"

"Genichirou and Hiroshi have finally finished playing, I see," Yanagi commented, joining the group seconds before the ball whizzed past Yagyuu's racket, scoring Sanada the game point. He turned to the young captain in the next moment. "You should be home resting."

"If I had a hundred yen for every time someone's told me I should be resting..." Yukimura trailed off woefully.

"And despite this you still don't listen," Sanada growled, snatching up his towel from the bench.

"The teachers are in a meeting right now, but I was planning on having a word with Kajiyama-sensei afterwards. Sanada? Yanagi?"

"Of course," the boys agreed, ready to accompany their captain anywhere.

Kirihara couldn't help but be a little annoyed at that. He'd wanted to go home with Sanada again tonight, but if he was going to meet with Yukimura and Yanagi and their faculty advisor then it would probably be another hour before Sanada was ready to leave school. At least.

"Oiya, don't pout, kiddo," Niou interrupted his thoughts, slinging an arm around Kirihara's shoulders. "Sure the glorious three will be in there forever talking shop with the old kraken, but it's way early yet. Whaddaya say you and me go hit up the Palace. We can play a few games, get a bite to eat."

He started off towards the locker rooms, tugging Kirihara along with him and calling over his shoulder to his partners. "'Roshi? You guys comin'?"

"You've worked things out between you two."

Sanada shot his captain and best friend a half-amused look. He wondered what exactly the others had been saying about him. Yukimura just smiled.

"Nothing horrible," the captain assured him.

"The consensus is in favor of the match," Yanagi added from behind.

"Did the consensus think to consult me for my opinion?" Sanada growled, and the other two shared a look around him. He hated when they did that. Shared some silent communication about him with him right there.

"You aren't going to try and tell us you don't like him, are you?" Yanagi asked after a moment.

Yukimura didn't even bother to wait for a response. "So. Share the juicy bits," he commanded. "I know he went home with you yesterday. What did you two do, hmm?"

Sanada glowered but the expression was wasted in these two. "When did you become a shameless gossip?"

"When I had to live vicariously through you guys for the past four months," the captain replied with only a small hint of shadow in his voice and eyes. And then with a pressed smile, he added, "I'm addicted, I think."

"You're perverted, that's what you are," Sanada mumbled.

"Why? Because I want to know all the dirty details?" Yukimura smiled brightly. "So tell me. I know you two have kissed. Was he any good?"

"I am not having this conversation."

"From previous accounts," Yanagi offered, "Akaya's kissing rates average."

"Where-" Sanada sputtered but quickly cut himself off. "No. I don't want to know."

"Akaya has dated five girls since his freshman year, confirmed," the data analys informed them. "Three other people are unconfirmed, including Takayumi-kun from 2-C."

"Really?"

"Can we please not talk about this," Sanada tried to interrupt before Yukimura could become more entangled.

"Auh, are you jealous? Really, Sanada, you should be grateful that Akaya isn't a complete innocent."

"You're not going to let this go, are you?" he asked resignedly.

"Probably not," Yukimura agreed cheerfully.

"Nothing's worked out," Sanada finally answered. "We fooled around a bit and then had dinner with my family before he went home."

"Oh? He stayed for dinner?"

"Mm. I'm jealous. Your mom is such a good cook."

"And already meeting your family," Yanagi continued.

"Shut up," he grumbled, pointedly walking ahead.
