Another chapter. I'm really trying to aim for surreal with this fic. I hope I manage to do it.
The machines in the ER beeped an ostinato in place of his almost inaudible heartbeat. Static whispers served as harmony to the doctors' clear orders. The metallic clinks of the instruments were grace notes.
“Scalpel.”
Beep.
Beep.
Clink.
Beep.
Poor thing. His head's almost split open.
Clink.

Beep.
“Forceps.”
What was he thinking, charging an armed man like that?
He tried to focus through the medically aided haze; there was a conspicuous numbness throughout his scalp; his eyelids were far too heavy to lift; everything was much, much too loud.
Beep.
Beep.
Clink.
This bleeding needs to stop.
“This bleeding needs to stop.”

At the moment, he filed it away as something he'd think about later. However, that incident should have been Burton Guster's first clue that something was seriously wrong with him.
