Chapter 5: REUNION
Shampoo and I were headed down along a hallway. It was pretty quiet mostly, but we'd done our fair share of zombie-killing so far. I still had that pistol, and I was about getting ready for a nice, long nap...
...until Kuno's wooden sword passed through the door to my left. Luckily I stopped inches before it. Shampoo looked at the door.
"I guess we know where Kuno is!" she said.
I pushed open the door only to see Mousse, Hiroshi, and Kuno, plus a dead S.T.A.R.S. guy on the floor...and a severed hand with a radio in it. Hiroshi was covered in blood and he was hyperventilating. Mousse and Kuno were trying to calm him down. I could smell something burning nearby, and it was not a pretty stench.
"What the fuck happened here?" I asked, wondering if I really wanted to know.
Mousse came over to us and whispered the situation to me. Basically, they had just gotten there in time to save Hiroshi, but not Daisuke from a giant, mutant snake...oh, man...and that was Daisuke's severed hand clutching the radio. I suddenly felt extreme guilt at the loss of my friends so far.
"Man, first Gosunkugi, then Daisuke, maybe one of the others...it's my fault. I never should've brought anyone here. It was a stupid idea."
"No," Kuno said, turning to me. "It was not a stupid idea."
"What you talking, Kuno?" Shampoo asked.
Kuno tossed me a folded up piece of paper. I was confused at first, but I opened it up and read it. What the fuck...? I looked back up at him.
"Is this for real?" I asked.
"It is."
"What is it?" Hiroshi asked, calming down.
"It's a memo...it says that the purpose of this facility is to create a new type of a new top-secret bioweapons division...basically that the 'T-Virus' is what's turning everyone into zombies and creating these mutants."
"How'd a virus like that get loose?" Mousse asked.
"Hmm..." I thought about it for a minute. Questions were running through my head a mile a minute and I had no answers yet. Who were these "S.T.A.R.S." guys, and why weren't any of them still alive to answer that? How did an entire mansion full of scientists manage to get infected with a virus that turns them into zombies? Were WE going to turn into zombies? What the hell does Umbrella have to do with all this?
A sudden chopping sound, like wood, caught my attention. It came from the wall to my right, and we all turned. It was a rythmic banging sound and it continued to get louder each time. Mousse and Kuno each raised a weapon and waited. The wall began to crack. One or two more chops and it was through.
BANG! The wall cracked open and debris fell to the floor. Ukyo stepped out of the hole, wielding her giant battle spatula.
"Hey, there you guys are!" she yelled.
"Ukyo, where did you head off to before?" Mousse asked. "I thought you were following me."
"Dick! I thought YOU were following ME! I almost got killed, like, fifty times now!"
"Say, that reminds me...where's your sister, Kuno?"
"I do not know...we took separate paths."
"Hey, and has anybody seen Akane or Ryoga lately?"
Everyone shook their heads.
"Shit...we have to go find them." I looked over at Hiroshi. He wasn't looking well at all...but I imagine losing your best friend can have that effect on you. "Hiroshi, you ok?"
He nodded without looking at me. I could tell this was going to take some time.
"I no think we should split up anymore," Shampoo said.
"I like her idea," Mousse said.
"Alright, alright...everyone follow me, ok? And someone get the radio."
Kuno grabbed the radio off the floor, removed the hand, and slid it into his belt. He picked up another severed hand that I had apparantly missed. It was attached to a pistol.
"Saotome," he said. I turned and he tossed the gun to me after removing the hand.
"Thanks," I said as we headed out into the hallway. Two guns...twice the damage. Groovy.
* * * * *
We moved slowly in a big group, each one of us on the lookout for something that wanted to brutally mutilate us. We were headed down a flight of stairs that took a turn to the left; we went down and blasted a couple of zombies awaiting us. To the left of the stairs was a small room. Mousse and I went in to check it out. A large chest sat against the back wall. Mousse went and opened it.
"Woah," Mousse said. "Look here, Ranma."
I looked into the chest and was surprised to see several boxes of shells, clips of ammo, and cannisters for the bazooka.
"Holy shit. Looks like they stocked up here." I looked over the pile again; there were two big cannisters, like the ones that hold gas and stuff. What could those be for?
Well, we removed the ammo from the chest to our pockets. What we couldn't fit in there, we held or handed to the others as we headed back into the hallway.
"Here, Kuno," I said as I handed him some rounds for the bazooka. There were three cases; one had a red cap, one a grey cap, and the third had a yellow cap.
"Hmm..." Kuno said, inspecting the colored caps, "what do you suppose it means?"
"I don't know...I just hope you know how to handle that thing."
"Really," Shampoo interjected, "Shampoo no need to be blown up today. Is bad for complexion."
"Hey, I know what I'm do--"
Hiroshi suddenly doubled over and groaned in pain. He spit out blood and Ukyo immediately began to pat him on the back.
"Are you ok?" she asked.
He looked up at us. That's when I noticed his face; it was starting to get sort of old, haggard-looking. His wound was festering there on his ankle...he probably wasn't going to make it. But there was no way I could tell him that...and we couldn't just LEAVE him...
Hiroshi fell flat on the floor, unconscious. Kuno and Ukyo knelt beside him, making sure he had a pulse.
"What we do with him?" Shampoo asked me.
I thought for a second. "Kuno, can you carry him?"
"I can," he nodded.
Kuno picked Hiroshi up and set him over his shoulders, like one of those cheap fur coats.
"Let's go."
We moved down the hall and entered yet another hallway...with a couple dead zombies littering the floor.
"Well, somone was already here..." Mousse noted.
We continued forth and came to a fork; a door to the left and another door down a narrow passage to the right. I pushed open the door on the left and looked in...
Just a room with a bunch of paintings on the wall...crows on the ceiling...forget it.
I closed the door and led the others down that narrow passage to the other door. It was a big metal door, and I pushed it open. We stepped inside and entered a big, stone hallway. I stopped as soon as I heard the clicking sounds.
Two of those helldogs stepped out from around the corner at the end of the hall and growled at us.
"Ranma..." Shampoo whispered.
She didn't have to tell me twice; I lifted the pistols and opened fire on the dogs, both at the same time. They flipped over backwards and continued at us. I quickly ran out of ammo.
"Shit!" I yelled. They were running at us now.
"Stand aside," Kuno said, lifting the bazooka. I looked behind him to see Hiroshi on the floor. Still unconscious.
Kuno aimed, fired, and BOOM: hit the floor right in front of the dogs, spraying them with shrapnel. When the dust cleared, I saw that Kuno had done a pretty accurate job...one dog twitched as it lay on the floor, its head sheared in half. The other dog...well, pretty much all that was left of it was its teeth and a wagging tail.
"Sick," I said.
Kuno picked up Hiroshi and we moved forward, past the newest mess, and turned the corner. A steel door stood in front of us, and next to it was some type of device with four pentagonal slots. A key, maybe...? Well, we didn't have any keys for this, and we definitely didn't have the time. I kicked the door as hard as I could...but I then fell on my ass, the door remaining intact. I grimaced at the pain in my leg as Shampoo and Ukyo helped me up.
"Ow, ow, holy SHIT, ow--"
"Well, now what do we do?" Mousse asked.
Ukyo turned to Kuno. "Kuno, can you blast the door open?"
"Hmm...not from this range...but I have an idea."
Kuno handed Hiroshi to Mousse and opened the grey cannister and pulled out a bazooka round. He set it right in front of the door and held his hand out in front of me, the strap to the bazooka in it. I took the strap and put it around my shoulder (and I grabbed the ammo cases as well) and slapped a pistol in his hand, realizing what he was doing, and I moved away from the area. The others followed me back down the hallway. When I felt we were at a safe enough distance, I turned back to see Kuno aiming the gun towards the door.
"Are you ready?" he called without looking.
"Yeah! Do it!" I yelled back.
Kuno fired the gun and ran towards us at the same time. The bullet hit the bazooka round and it exploded, sending a blast of flames in all directions. Kuno had almost gotten out of the way in time, but the force of the blast sent him sprawling towards us as he fell to the floor. We immediately ran to him, and Shampoo, Ukyo, and I helped him up. He spat quite a bit of blood and stood on his own. His face and clothes were really dirty, too. He looked at us.
"I did it," he said.
"Good work, man," I responded. Kuno handed the pistol to me, but I told him to keep it...it didn't look like he'd be in any shape to use the bazooka for a while.
We headed over to were the door used to be. A smoking hole now stood before us, and we walked through. Blood was splattered ALL over the place. Body parts were strewn about, too. See, apparantly, this room had some zombies inside, waiting to ambush us...but when Kuno blew up the door, it sent the steel door right through the zombies, into the next steel door, which came off its hinges, and by the looks of it, smashed one of those fucked-up dogs into a wall outside.
"Nice work, Kuno," Mousse said. Kuno was kinda bug-eyed, like he couldn't believe the extent of the damage. He nodded absently as he ran a hand through his hair.
Mousse started heading over to Hiroshi when he noticed that Hiroshi was lying on his side, blood running from his mouth, eyes closed. He was pale, and he wasn't moving. The rest of us were focused on the door.
"Hey, Hiroshi," Mousse said lightly as he reached for him.
It turned around to tell Mousse to hurry it up, but I was just in time to see something that really topped my day off.
Suddenly, Hiroshi's eyes shot open and they were friggin' WHITE, all white, and he sat up right as Mousse got to him. Hiroshi sank his teeth into Mousse's hand, and Mousse let out a loud scream, which got the others' attention.
"Mousse!" Kuno yelled as he turned to see it.
Mousse was busy screaming and looking at his mangled hand as Hiroshi pulled himself away with two of Mousse's fingers in his mouth. He stood up, blood running down his chin, and he grabbed Mousse, who was still screaming.
I aimed my pistol at Hiroshi, but I couldn't get a clear shot.
"MOUSSE!" Shampoo screeched as Hiroshi turned Mousse's neck at an angle and took a rather large chomp out of it. Mousse screamed and brought the shotgun handle up, smacking Hiroshi in the face.
Hiroshi staggered back and Mousse turned around, feeling the wound on his neck. He looked at his hand and saw blood, then he spit some out.
"Fuck!" he hissed at Hiroshi, who was approaching him again, moaning. Mousse pumped the shotgun and lifted it, pointing it right at Hiroshi's stomach. "THIS is how you kill someone, dickhead!"
Ok, basically, there was a loud BOOM, and then a sickening cracking sound, followed immediately by a splattering sound. Most of us had to turn away because of the blood spray. I looked back to see Hiroshi's legs still standing...but the rest of him was on the floor, crawling at Mousse with his mouth open, pouring blood.
Mousse pumped the shotgun again and aimed at Hiroshi's head, but the head was quickly severed, and his body fell to the floor, still. Kuno had used his bokken to slice Hiroshi's head off.
Shampoo immediately went over behind Mousse and gently held him in place. "Mousse, you alright?"
"Yeah...I think so..."
Kuno gave me a look. I knew right away what he was thinking; we were probably all thinking it. I looked over at Ukyo and saw she was thinking the same thing. Mousse caught us looking at each other and realized.
"Wait a minute, guys," he said, "Come on...I've watched your backs this long...just let me fight until it happens, ok?"
"Alright," Kuno said, sheathing his bokken and lifting the bazooka. "But if you begin to act strangely...I will take you out."
Ukyo ripped the sleeve off her shirt and handed it to Shampoo. "Get this around his neck."
Shampoo gently wrapped the sleeve around Mousse's neck, drawing faint hisses, and tied it in a light knot.
"How long do you think you can hold out, Mousse?" I asked him.
"I don't know...but I'm dead, right?"
I hesitated a moment. Even though he was still walking, talking, and breathing, was Mousse really dead? Right now, is he still living, thinking like a human being? Or is he an agent of the undead, the virus or whatever the hell it is coursing through his veins?
I nodded. "Yeah, no question about it."
"Well, Hiroshi held out for a while...maybe I'll get lucky."
"Yeah...maybe."
"We should move on," Shampoo said. "Longer we stay and talk, less time Mousse have to live."
I nodded again. Mousse seemed to be uncaring of Shampoo's feelings for him, whatever they may be. Right now, I'm sure Shampoo was the furthest thing from his mind. I tell ya...I'll bet he would've taken out all the zombies in this entire friggin' estate if he hadn't been killed only an hour later.
