This or the Other: Part 2TendoAkane
"What if something I think is great, really is great, but it's not as great as something...greater ?"
This line from The Wedding Planner made Akane stop and think. This was exactly the thing she had been contemplating the past few hours, days, and weeks. The thought lingered in her mind as she finished her movie and then proceeded to get online to check her email.
"You've got mail." Akane softly recited with the computer as she signed into her AOL account. She checked her messages but there was nothing other than the usual junk mail.
Akane sighed and glanced at her buddy list to see who was on. It was no surprise to her that Ranma had an away message up, saying that he was training and would be back soon. She knew that he had probably fallen asleep and wouldn't check his messages for the next several hours. She left him a quick note saying she loved him, sighed, and aimlessly surfed the internet for a few minutes, unsuccessfully finding something to do.
Just as she was about to give up, get off-line, and go to bed, her computer ding! ed and a blinking window popped up. Akane beamed. It was Ryoga, saying hi. She hadn't expected to talk to him that day, and she immediately brightened up.
They carried on a light conversation for a few minutes when Akane decided to ask Ryoga the question that had been haunting her.
MALLETGIRL85: Ryoga, is it possible to want something when you already have something else?
LOSTPIG4U: Um, I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at...
MALLETGIRL85: well, what do you think of this quote..."What if something I think is great, really is great, but it's not as great as something greater?"
LOSTPIG4U: I'm confused
MALLETGIRL85: ok, what if I have something that I know is good, is it wrong for me to look for something that might be better?
LOSTPIG4U: maybe you'd better tell me what's going on?
MALLETGIRL85: it's Ranma....
LOSTPIG4U: oooh...ic...
Ryoga paused for a moment, wondering what to tell her. He proceeded to give her a virtual hug and tell her he wished he could give her one in person, but he wasn't quite sure where he was at the moment.
Akane smiled and also wished that she could be with him, but knowing that she would most likely see him in a few days made it bearable. They talked for a while longer about the question, and then about getting together some time soon.
Glancing again at her buddy list, Akane saw that Ranma's away message was gone and he was no longer idle. Feeling a small twinge of guilt, she pushed the thought away and focused back on talking to Ryoga.
Ranma then messenged Akane and wanted to talk, but she didn't say anything right away.
Akane stared at the screen for a moment, and then looked back to her conversation with Ryoga. He had just said that the next time he saw her he'd be sure to give her a huge hug, and that made her very happy. Yet, when she saw the words from Ranma, she felt nothing.
RANMAtheGREAT: hi love, how are you?
MALLETGIRL85: I'm fine
MALLETGIRL85: you?
RANMAtheGREAT: good. I love you.
MALLETGIRL85: I love you too.
RANMAtheGREAT: what are you doing?
MALLETGIRL85: nothing. Talking to some friends.
RANMAtheGREAT: oh really, who?
MALLETGIRL85: ryoga
RANMAtheGREAT: oh ok.
MALLETGIRL85: yeah
*long pause*
RANMAtheGREAT: sweetie, are you all right?
MALLETGIRL85: im fine
RANMAtheGREAT: ok. Well I'm going to bed, come say goodnight before you go to sleep.
MALLETGIRL85: ok, bye
RANMAtheGREAT: I love you
MALLETGIRL85: I love u 2. Goodnight.
RANMAtheGREAT: night
RANMAtheGREAT has signed off.
Akane felt slightly guilty that in her conversation with Ranma she gave very brief answers but with Ryoga she was open and vocal. She didn't really want to go say goodnight to him either. But she had to. He had no idea that anything was wrong with her. And she didn't want to say anything right now, either. Yet at the same time, she did not want to use him and keep him by her side only so she wouldn't be alone. Akane returned her attention to the conversation she was having with Ryoga.
MALLETGIRL85: ryoga, I'm so confused
LOSTPIG4U: why hun?
MALLETGIRL85: I don't know what to do and I don't want to be alone right now
LOSTPIG4U: you know I would be with you if I could. But right now I think we both need to get some sleep.
MALLETGIRL85:you're probably right.
MALLETGIRL85: Ryoga?
LOSTPIG4U: yeah, what is it akane?
MALLETGIRL85: what does akari think about you and I and...you know?
LOSTPIG4U: I really don't care what she thinks about it, its none of her business.
MALLETGIRL85: *nods* ok. I just wondered...
LOSTPIG4U: don't worry about it hun.
MALLETGIRL85: *nods*
LOSTPIG4U: akane, you're a very very good friend to me, and I'm not going to let something ruin that.
MALLETGIRL85: ok
MALLETGIRL85: aww thanks, you're a very very good friend to me, too ^_^
LOSTPIG4U: ^_^
MALLETGIRL85: I'll talk to you tomorrow?
LOSTPIG4U: you know you will. I love you, akane.
MALLETGIRL85: I love you too, ryoga
LOSTPIG4U: ttyl bye
MALLETGIRL85: night, byebye
LOSTPIG4U has signed off.
Akane stared at the screen for a moment, then saved her conversation with Ryoga and went to bed, even more confused than ever. What was she going to do? Was there anything she could do? Was there a way to figure everything out without hurting Ryoga, Ranma, or herself? She didn't think so. Maybe she'd be able to figure it out later.....
/15/2004's Notes: Ok, I know that I said This or the Other was going to be a one-shot. I lied. This is, obviously, part 2. Akane still doesn't know what to do, and I don't know either, because the story, as you can tell, is not over. Any suggestions? Email me at "mailto:Supergirl371@hotmail.com." Thanks for your patience!
