Dream Come True

Thinking back, I remember that feeling of isolation. That feeling you get when you know you don't belong. From day one, we all felt that way. We all felt isolated. Even from each other.
I hated them for what they did to my friends.

Darkfire woke slowly, head dizzy and spinning. She looked through the darkness with hazy eyes at the clock. “Eleven,” she murmured, slipping from the bed. Holding the left side of her neck in pain, she felt bumps. In a dazed rush, she opened the door and stumbled to the bathroom to look in the mirror. There, on her neck, was a tattoo of the kanji for fire. And on her left forearm was the kanji for wind. Her hair was jet black and her eyes were forest green; a black foxtail was literally sticking out of her butt.
“I don't…what…oh my,” she stuttered, straightening. And then a light bulb came on in her head. “Does this mean…?” She rushed out into the living room, seeing Angel and Osadyro on the two couches. Osadyro's hair was a sleek silver and Angel's was a deep terracotta. She stared hard at Osa's left bicep. “'Fire' and `ice,'” she murmured, reading the kanji. “Hey, Osa, wake up.”
The girl stirred and mumbled, eyes opening slowly. “D? Hey, your hair….” Her eyes were a bright, crystal blue with cat-like pupils.
“Hey, I think those guys from last night weren't ordinary creeps. I think they were psycho scientists. Osa…they made me a fox.”
She rolled from the couch and wobbled over to her friend. A black and white tiger tail flipped behind her. “What're you talking about?”
“I think they made us into what we only pretended to be.”
Osadyro stared with confusion.
“Look, if you don't believe me, there's the bathroom.” She watched as Osadyro cautiously peered into the mirror. She watched as the girl jumped at her reflection, slight as it was. The tiger touched her face and her hair and her teeth, her canines having elongated slightly.
“My God,” she whispered.
“Gee, Osa, if you were any more of a vampire, you wouldn't have a reflection,” Darkfire smirked, hovering over Angel.
“D, this isn't funny. Our bodies have been tampered with, our entire structure changed. This isn't a game anymore.”
Darkfire smiled. “You're right, it's not a game. It's my wildest dream come true.” She nudged Angel's shoulder. “I don't have to pretend anymore.”
“Well, I'm glad you're enjoying this. But I'm not. Getting along with people was hard enough before…before…this.”
The fox looked back at her friend. “I tried to stop it, Osa. I tried to keep you both from harm, but I failed. For that, I'm sorry. I hate them for what they did to you and Angel. But my dream has come true; it would be dumb for me to hate it.” She shook the sleeping boy's shoulder again.
“You know, I always wanted to be normal. But I guess Fate had other plans in mind. I'll try to accept it, too, D. `Cause, y'know, this has also been my dream.”
“Will you two shut up? I'm trying to sleep,” Angel growled, baring sharp canines.
“Angel, we have a slight problem. Now, this may come as a shock, but…your hair…well, it's…terracotta…and really long.”
The boy sprang up and stumbled into the bathroom. His golden eyes stared at his reflection. He touched his beautiful, ugly hair, disgust and anger showing on his face. A long, terracotta tail brushed his leg and he glowered at it. The kanji for shadow was on the right side of his chest.
“Angel the wolf demon…who'd a-thunk it,” Darkfire mused, smirking slightly.
“Was it them?” he whispered, backing slowly from the mirror. “Did they do this to us? Or is this a cruel joke? A dream, perhaps?”
Osadyro shook her head. “No, Angel, it's real. We're now what we only pretended to be.”
He turned on Darkfire. “I'm only like this because she wanted me to pretend! I never wanted to play her stupid game!”
Osa, fuming, hissed, “Well you did and this is what happened! Now we'll learn to deal with it!” She bared her long, vampiric fangs, eyes gleaming with malice.
Darkfire's eyes widened suddenly and she darted up the stairs.
“D!” Osa called, following.
The fox stood in the kitchen, staring at the counter. Atop it were a pair of kama, a katana, and a kusari gama. With them was a letter addressed to “The Three Allies.”
“What's that?” Osadyro inquired, picking up the letter.
“I guess they wanted us to know something.” Darkfire picked up the katana as the tiger opened the envelope.
“'Dear Allied Friends,'” she read. “'This may come as a shock, and that is to be expected. Fear not these changes, for they are something you've dreamed of for a long time. But…do not throw caution to the wind.
“'Somewhere in the world is another like yourselves. Find him, as he is looking for you, too. The consequences of him finding you first could be devastating, but unknown. But no matter. Between you, including this foe, someone will die, be it you or him.
“'Be comforted by the fact that on your journey you may encounter others like yourselves and befriend them. But be cautious still, for your best friend could turn out to be your worst enemy. Best of luck.'”
“Anywhere in the world, eh? Hell of a needle in a haystack,” sighed Darkfire.
“I think the haystack is the least of our problems. This needle is deadly.”
“Only if we don't find and kill it first.”
“How the hell do you kill a needle?” Angel scoffed, catching the end of the conversation.
“Metaphor, Angie, metaphor,” Darkfire sighed, tossing him the letter.
“Don't call me that,” he growled, skimming the note. “This is bullshit.”
“I dunno, Angie…seems pretty real to me,” the fox yawned. “And do you really want to chance it?”
“They've already screwed up my life enough—”
“Do you honestly think it'll go back to normal if you ignore it? Do you really think you'll be the pretty-boy basketball star still? You can't hide what you've become, hard as you try. And you know it. But, hey, if you think people'll accept you, go ahead, be my guest. Just don't come cryin' to me when people call you a freak, look at ya funny, avoid you. Don't you dare.”
Angel grabbed the sickle and chain from the counter. “What's your plan then? Since you seem to have all the answers.”
Darkfire narrowed her emerald eyes. “I'm running away to meet this creature head on. You do whatever the hell you want.”
“D,” Osadyro said, gripping her friend's shoulder, “I'm coming with you.”
The fox nodded and got a pen and piece of paper. On it she inscribed:
Dear Mom and Dad,
I'm leaving on a journey. Please don't worry. I just have to do this; I have to find myself. Don't try to find me because I won't come home. Not until it's over.
I love you more than you'll ever know,
~Darkfire~
PS- Osa and Angel are coming with me. Let their parents know for `em?
“There,” she sighed, leaving the paper on the counter. “Time to pack.”
The other two nodded, “Right.”
