[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Living in New York had been tough for young Adriana. At age eleven, she found out what marijuana smelt like from her friend’s older brother, who was only four years older than they. At first the young girl didn’t like it, thinking it was a foul odor. But over the following year, every time she went over to her friend’s house and her friend’s brother started to smoke his funny looking cigarette, she grew more accustom to the scent. The youth grew more and more curious as to why her friend’s brother, who was normally a stressed out and easily annoyed person, became such a fun and entertaining person to be around after a couple of minutes with his funny cigarette.
Finally, a little after her fourteenth birthday, she convinced her friend to talk to her brother about his mystery substance. The two girls knocked on his door, nervous yet excited. Her brother opened the door with a normal cigarette hanging limply from his mouth. “What?” he barked harshly. It was obvious he was not in a good mood. “W-what are you doing?” her friend, Leslie, asked her brother. But Robert, just sneered, getting ready to close the door when another voice from the room stopped him. “Come on, they’re old enough to know,” a lazy voice drawled out. Robert sighed and opened his door further so the girls could enter.
The two youths looked at one another and slipped into the room. Inside were colorful posters that, if stared at for too long, would twirl and spin. A low hum of music was emitted from the speakers and the entire room smelt of the substance. “Have a seat,” another eager voice offered, patting the spot where he sat on the bed. Adriana took the seat next to the blonde haired boy. At first glance, he was kind of cute but Adriana knew he must have been about seventeen, too old for her. Another boy in a bean bag chair, with his head leaned back, was staring at the ceiling as Robert fumbled through his dresser. Leslie’s face was red, meaning she was getting more nervous, it was her tell tale sign, but she took a seat at her brother’s desk, facing the group.
“So how old are you?” the blonde haired boy questioned Adriana, looking her over. “Fourteen,” she choked out nervously. “Wow, fooled me,” he remarked casually as he turned to Robert, who was rolling another one of his funny cigarettes, having tossed his normal menthol brand into an ash tray. Adriana watched him closely, eyes of brilliant green ever so curious. She studied him as he placed the white stick into his mouth and lit the other end with a lighter. It took a little bit to get the ember to smoke but once he did, his eyes relaxed as the smoke traveled into his lung. Holding his breath, he passed the object to the boy beside Adriana. “What is that?”
The boy just looked at her with a grin. “Weed, would you like to try it?” But Robert coughed, smoke escaping his mouth. “No, dude! It’s laced,” “Laced? I see no lace,” Adriana thought to herself. The blonde haired male shook his head. “We smoke this stuff all the time, she’ll be fine,” Then he turned his attention back to Adriana, who just stared at the white stick in his hand. There was no doubt that she wanted to but she froze. “I’ll show you how,” the male remarked, explaining and demonstrating how to pull in the smoke and let it settle in the lungs.
With a shaky hand, Adriana took ‘joint,’ or so he called it, and lifted it to her lips. She had watched her mother smoke a cigarette plenty of times, so she just copied what she remembered. Taking a deep breath, the smoke penetrated her lungs ruthlessly, making her choke and cough. The blonde haired male patter her back. “Whoa! Not so fast! Try again, just take it easy,” But she wasn’t sure if she wanted to try it again. Her eyes were watery and stung but she managed to look over at Leslie, who was watching her with a fearful gaze. Swallowing the lump in her throat, she lifted the joint again. This time she took it slow, breathing in deeply until she thought her lungs out explode and letting the smoke swirl and settle. There was a rush to her head like no other. Her mind danced so fast that she couldn’t keep up with the thoughts that played like a high speed movie.
After that day, Adriana and Leslie became the life of any party. Every weekend they were at someone’s house trying any and all drugs. Ecstasy, mushrooms, alcohol, even cocaine and heroin a couple of times but they weren’t big on that. The two girls’ life was an endless party of drugs, music and sex; even going as far as to experiment with each other, sometimes a boy joined them. Sleeping all day and through school only to be reborn again during the night… That was until Adriana’s mother found out. The female, who was now sixteen, had kept her secret life from her mother well enough. Her mother left for work everyday at seven in the morning and did not return until midnight, only to heat up a microwave dinner, shower and go to sleep. This made sneaking out easy for Adriana. Unfortunately, her mother came home early one day, around nine or ten, having just been given a big promotion and wanted to share the news with her daughter.
Upon opening the door, her eyes took in such a horrendous sight. Her daughter atop a man that she had never seen before, drugs spilled all over the floor along with empty bottles of vodka. The woman nearly fainted. It took her several seconds to gain her composure as the rage set in. In a fit of fury, she ripped Adriana off the man by the hair, throwing her to the ground. The man was quick to spring up, grab his clothes and run half naked from the apartment building. “Mom!” Adriana shouted, still a bit buzzed from the vodka.
There were so many hateful things shouted to one another, things no mother or daughter should say to one another. As her mother grabbed every pill and baggie she could find, as she raided the teen’s room, Adriana shouted, screamed and protested, begging her mother not to throw them away. Of course the mother didn’t listen, she took everything to the bathroom and flushed it down the toilet. Adriana watched in horror as the drugs slipped away into the pipes. Then her mother pushed her back into her room and slammed the door. Seconds later, she was on the phone with someone.
In a panic, Adriana looked around for an escape. The window? No, they were on the fourth floor and the fire escape latter was broken. Out the door? Not with her mother standing there, she’s never make it into the hallway. A sweat broke out over Adriana’s brow, there was no escape! Before she knew it, her mother slammed the door open again. “Pack your bags!”
