“I'm sorry,” said the voice through the phone. She didn't hear it. She was completely numb. She hung up the phone, it was a natural action, she didn't need to think. The only word that came to mind was no. Denial was all her mind would process.
“Abigale! You're going to be late!” called her mother from the front door. She grabbed her book bag and walked out the door.
All through school she acted like she didn't see what was before her. She didn't see the worry on her best friend's face, the scorn in the bully's eyes when she didn't react with her usual smart ass remark. Her tongue, which was usually quick and sharp, was as numb as her mind. Her gait was slow and hesitant compared to her confident, quick steps from the day before. Her eyes seemed to stare right through whoever was talking to her. As she walked through the halls people stepped out of her way as if she were diseased. She didn't see any of the strange behavior, she wasn't paying any attention. She just kept going over the conversation on the phone that morning. It still hadn't dawned on her. She was still denying every word of it, thinking “No, not me. It can't be true.”
Her final class came all to quickly. She wasn't ready for the free time she had. She was standing in the middle of the band room when a single word breeched her silence.
“No.” she whispered. She felt the tears brimming her eyes as realization hit her. She slipped down to her knees as the sobs filled her ears, not realizing they were her own. She repeated the only word filling her mind. “No! No! No!” she said, her voice elevating in volume until she was screaming. She saw someone kneel in front of her through the haze of her tears.
“Go get Louis!” she heard the girl now gripping her shoulders shout. From the corner of her eye she saw someone dart away. A few minutes later a pair of arms enveloped her. She buried her head in Louis's chest, listening to the soft words he spoke but she didn't understand. The room had fallen silent except for her sobs and his voice. By looking at him you wouldn't be able to see his soft spot for his sister. They were the best of friends and told each other everything. Even so he didn't know what was wrong until she started speaking coherently.
“I've got it, Louie. The test showed it. I've got it.” she said between sobs. Louis's face went rigid when he realized what she was talking about.
“No, Abby! You can't have cancer!” Louis's voice rang out in the silence though he was only whispering. He looked around as if searching for someone to blame for his sister's illness. He spotted the boy everyone called Lucy to make fun of his real name, Lucian, and his gaze filled with anger. Lucian had recently broken Abigale's heart, and Louis had hated every minute that she had cried.
“You! It's your fault! Ever since you hurt her!” Louis shouted, he was interrupted by Abigale's hands pushing on his chest. She shoved him back causing herself to be left in the floor on hands and knees.
“Don't you dare blame him! This is no more his fault than it is yours!” she shouted, though the words were directed at Louis her face was toward the floor.
“You still love him? After what he did!?” Louis asked incredulously. Abigale's head jerked up to show Louis the angry shock in her eyes.
“Louis, that's like asking if I love you, or if God loves his angels.” she stated, her anger drying her tears.
Just then the dismissal bell rang.
