Abigale lay on the massage table listening to Marie talk. She wasn't paying attention, her mind was still on Lucian.
“Abby? Did you hear me?” Marie asked.
“Huh?” Abigale returned.
“You weren't listening!” Marie accused. Then she smiled. “So,” she started slowly, “what were you and Lucy doing before I got there?”
“Nothing,” Abigale answered, blushing.
“Your face is redder than a tomato. You're lying,” Marie almost sung.
“You're right,” Abigale laughed. “But it doesn't mean I'll tell you.”
“Ah, com on! You know I don't want exact details! Just a little insight.”
“Lady bird, you crack me up,” Abigale stated. “Fine. we were engaged in an extremely, repeat, extremely heated conversation.”
“Really,” Marie said. “And what was this conversation about?”
“I asked him is he loved me.” Marie smiled, and her tone lightened.
“What did he say?”
“He told me I was beautiful, and kind.” Abigale blushed. “Then he asked me how couldn't he.”
“So, otherwise, he said `Of course I love you, you're you after all.'” Abigale laughed at Marie's attempt to imitate Lucian's voice. “Don't laugh!” Marie said, joining in Abigale's mirth. Abigale suddenly stopped laughing. Marie noticed.
“What's wrong?” she said.
“Last night he said he needed me,” Abigale answered.
“What's wrong with that?”
“Nothing, exactly,” she began , haltingly. “I didn't like seeing him the way he was. He seemed like he was tortured. I don't like that.”
“I can understand that. You love him, too. I could tell since the first time he asked you out.”
“I'm still not sure he loves me back.”
“Of course he does! That's why he…” Marie broke off.
“Why he what?” prompted Abigale.
“I can't tell you.”
“Tell me anyway.”
“You'll find out soon enough.”
“You know I don't like surprises.”
“You'll see.” Marie ended the conversation.
