Brief Meeting and a Name

It felt like ages as I just stood there staring at the mysterious man who had just spoken a second ago. I couldn't come to grips with the fact that he was standing before me. The thought of how he was invited to my engagement party never crossed my mind; I was just mesmerized by the fact that he right her in the current moment. As I continued to stare, he began to come towards me. All I could do was watch him until it finally registered that he was dressed up in a nice suit, which brought me back to the reality of what I was even doing on this balcony. Memories started to flood my mind of previous events leading up to this moment. As he finally stood beside me, I was finally able to react, until he spoke again.

“Now whose being the silent one,” he said while gazing off into the clear, starry sky.

I turned towards him ready to ask all the many questions that were running in circles inside my head, and as I opened my mouth to speak…

“There you are, our engagement is about to be announced, we are both needed at the center of the ballroom,” Drake said as he eyes both me and the dark stranger next to me.

“Oh, I didn't realize I had been out here that long,” I glance at the mysterious man, his gaze still out into the night sky, and then I start to walk towards Drake.

“The name's Adrian,” came the voice behind me.

I glance back at him, his back still to me, as I head into the ballroom with Drake.

“So who was that man on the balcony with you?” Drake asked as we made our way through the crowd.

“I really don't know. I never met him before tonight,” I replied, fibbing slightly.

Before he could reply with more questions, that I anticipated, an unfortunately unforgettable voice came over the sound system.

“Attention, attention. The guests of honor have finally arrived. Let me be the first to say congratulations to the future Mr. and Mrs. Stein,” came my mother's voice followed by cheers and thunderous applause as the guest circled around Drake and I.

My mother than proceeds to kiss me on both of my cheeks and then is hugged by Drake who takes the microphone from her to give a surprise speech he had planned for the evening. I had no idea, so was caught off guard by the whole thing.

“Thank you everyone for joining us this evening to help us celebrate our engagement. I just have to say that I am one of the luckiest guys to have ever met a woman as pretty and intelligent as my future wife, Gwendolyn,” he commented and started to clap, which everyone else followed suit. He continued, “It has been two years since the day we first laid eyes on one another, and at that time I knew she was different than the rest, and found myself instantly enthralled with her.” He stares at me with his sparkling eyes and I couldn't help prevent the slight flush of my cheeks in response. “I just can't wait to spend every night in her arms till we both say our final goodbyes in old age. So let us all toast to the future Mrs. Stein, and to the most anticipated party of the year; our wedding. Cheers! Now I have one more important question to ask my dear Gwendolyn,” he eyes me. “May I have the first dance of the evening, my future wife?”

He holds out his hand to me as he asks me to dance, and I almost immediately take it with my response, “yes of course you may, my future husband,” I said with a smile. We start to dance to a lovely waltz that the string musicians begin to play. We dance close so our hearts were practically touching as I lay my head on his shoulders. A person would think that the dance would be the only thing on my mind, but that was far from the truth in my situation. Adrian, the dark stranger was still plaguing me. What interested me most was the moment that I saw him my fear of this party dissipated and it seemed that we were the only two people here. In his presence I had nearly forgotten the true reason that brought me to this hall. I wanted to know more about him and the reason that I am so drawn to him. There has to be something behind my intrigue. Plus I had so many questions for him, such as why he is even at my engagement party and whether he knew me prior to our meeting in the park. I don't even know anything about him and I just found out his name tonight; Adrian. “It fit him well,” I thought to myself as the waltz came to an end.

“Well my darling, are you ready to call it a night. We did our good deed for your mother in being here and letting her toast to our future, so I'm guessing it should be fine if we sneak away. Plus I've been dieing to get you out of that dress the moment you put it on.” He starts to kiss my neck traveling downward to my collarbone, which always gives me goose bumps. “I have missed you so much these past few months, let's go home and enjoy this chance to be alone together. What do you say?”

I smile at him and reply, “That sounds like the perfect plan.” With that Drake kisses me passionately and we both start to head out of the ballroom, but not before I notice Adrian talking to my mother in the corner. This sparks a whole new line of questions that I have for this mysterious Adrian guy, but that thought is quickly diminished as Drake pulls me into another passionate kiss as we exit the hall.

“Do you take this man as your husband from this day forward, to cherish, to love, through the good and bad times, as long as you both shall live?

I suddenly shoot up in bed with tiny beads of sweat on my skin. It had been awhile since I had that dream and I thought I was passed that, but it returned once again. The same dream with the same outcome; me, walking down this aisle towards some unknown, faceless man. I look over at Drake sound asleep. We were both pretty tired after a few times of reintroducing ourselves to each other that night. I start to think about it and couldn't help but smile. Why should I be worrying about some silly dream when my dreams are about to come true in a few months. I will be marrying the man of my dreams, and we will be able to finally start the life we both want; together. I lie back down in bed and cuddle up to Drake, who didn't stir once, and I quickly fall back to a dreamless sleep.

When the alarm woke me up the next morning, I practically jumped out of bed and hurried out the door. I couldn't wait to get to work. I desperately wanted to see if the mysterious man, I mean Adrian would return to the park during my break again. I hoped he would, considering I now knew he could speak, so he should have no problem answering a few questions that I had for him.

Work went horribly slow today; of course that's what happens when you really want break to come. It finally came and in no time I was out the back door of the hospital and into the lovely enclosed park, and what did I see. Nobody. Disappointment was an understatement to how I felt when I saw that I was the only one that decided to enjoy the parks beauty that day. I walked over to the tree that I had seen him lean against a couple of times and took my break there. Just thinking of all the questions that would remain unanswered. I told myself that there was always tomorrow, and that helped to perk up my spirits as I went back to work to finish up my day.

Weeks went by and still no mysterious stranger leaning against the apple blossom tree, which had now lost all its petals making the scene feel even emptier. I guess I will never really know why he looked so lost those two days that I found him gazing off at nothing, while I tried feebly to spark up a conversation and lift his spirits. I will also never know why he happened to be there that night at a party that was celebrating me and my fiancé, including that whole conversation I saw him having with my mother; and I didn't dare ask her about it, who knows what new gossip might develop off that.

As I walked home from another long day of work I decided to give up my quest to find the answers to my curious questioning. I didn't have the time to worry about such silly nonsense anyway. I had a wedding to plan, which I had regrettable been putting off and now it was really coming down to the wire. So with a smile on my face and a new mission to complete I headed home to my devoted Drake.
