As she laid her head on his lap he ran his hand over her back, rubbing it slowly as he stared at her. Laying his head back against the pillow he just rested. He was getting stronger, but there was no telling how much longer that would last. He knew the chances of recovery were slim, but he couldn't help but to hope for it. After all, what was life without hope? It could drive a man insane, but hope was all he really had right now. Hope and his Anna.Another week passed by, and Jun continued to get stronger. The doctor's didn't want them to get their hopes up. However, Jun was finding it hard not to. He could eat by himself. He could stay up for hours at a time. He was feeling better. He wasn't anywhere near what he had once been; but he was improving. That was all that mattered.
"I want to get up to use the restroom," Jun said, glaring daggers at his nurse. "I've had more than enough humiliation with this bed pan. The least you could do is let me get up and try to walk!"
Anna walked in, finally able to use her legs again. She moved the nurse out of the way and helped Jun out of the bed. "I told you, he gets what he wants. If he wants to go to the damn bathroom, let him," Anna snapped.
She had to admit, she had gone cold being at that hospital. But waiting for your husband to die does that to a person. Her doctor kept pushing at Anna to let him check and see if the baby was still there but she blew him off each time telling him she had something more important to deal with. She promised him that if she felt like anything was still inside her, she would let him know, but the nausea had stopped and it was still too soon to know if her period would come. Then again, it was easy to miss a period when you were over stressed. And she was, more than ever. She hadn't spoken to her mother or father in a week. They came by to talk to Jun but Anna always found a reason to leave and do something else. Every time she looked at her parents, they wanted to know about the baby. She was just sick of it. Couldn't they see that Jun was more important?
Anna helped Jun to the restroom and stood outside the door until she heard the toilet flush. Slowly, she helped him walk back to his bed and the nurse fluffed his pillow. "There, all better now?" Anna asked and kissed his cheek.
Jun smiled. "Yes," he told her. His hand caressed her cheek as he stared up at her. "Promise me something, Anna. When we get out of here, I want us to fix up the garden; and I want to make it better than ever."
Anna's smiled faded. "I asked you not to talk like that, Jun..." she said and sat down. "You know how much it breaks my heart. Stop making this harder for me...it's not fair."
Jun shook his head. "Anna, I'm not just going to sit in here and die," he told her. "I'm going to get through this. We've suffered too much to lose each other now. I'm not going to die."
There was a knock on the door and Anna's doctor came in. "Anna...it's been two weeks..."
Anna looked at Jun. "I don't want to talk about this. Not now, not ever." She stood and walked out of the room with her doctor. "I told you to just leave it alone."
"If you are still pregnant, the baby could be at serious risk. You need to get rest, take your vitamins, eat healthy, and get checkups," he said.
Anna's eyes narrowed. "When I no longer have my husband, then I will do things your way. But until then, I will do everything in my power to stay by his side. Nothing, and I mean nothing comes before Jun. So drop it or I'll see to it that you will be transferred from this hospital."
"Anna!" Jun sat up again. His face narrowed as he pulled out his IVs. He hissed, even as he stood on shaking legs. "Please, let him look at you, Anna." She was talking as if he was destined to die. If he was to die, then at the very least she could have their child so she wasn't alone.
Jun's doctor happened in on the chaos of the room. "Jun! Get to bed this instant," he ordered.
"No," Jun snapped.
The doctor sighed. "Anna, both you and Jun need to hear this. Can you please make him sit down?"
Anna looked at the door. She didn't shut it all the way so of course he heard. Anna gave one final warning glare at her doctor and walked back into Jun's room. She walked to him and pushed him back in the bed. "Stop making such a fuss, Jun." She fixed his IV and brushed his face. "You need to think of your health."
The doctor just shook his head as he looked at the two of them. "I've told you countless times not to get your hopes up; and I'm still warning against it. Still, I thought that you should know that the tests we've been doing as of late have been...positive. The cancer seems to be in remission; and we haven't seen any signs of growth."
Jun felt his heart stop. "So...what are you saying exactly?"
"I'm saying that I want to keep you here another week. Make certain that it's still in remission. You'll have monthly visits to check to make certain it stays that way; but for now.... I don't see why you can't go home in a week."
Jun took a deep breath. He felt his eyes water. The first thing he did was look over at Anna. "I told you so," he whispered.
Anna's hand went over her heart to make sure it hadn't given up on her. Her hand reached for a chair while she watched the doctor as if he was going to fade like she was stuck in a dream. Her doctor had been listening at the door and walked over to her to ease her into a chair.
"Easy, Anna," he said as she started to take deep breaths.
"Remission?" Anna asked in a broken voice caused by tears. "Does that mean it might come back?"
"It might," the doctor warned. "But I think with proper treatment and care we can keep it from doing so. We can also prevent it from getting serious again as long as Jun adheres to a strict set of conditions and comes to see us regularly."
Anna hung onto her doctor's arm even though she was sitting down. This was good news even if there was still a chance she could lose him down the road, but this still bought them time. And there was a chance it could never come back. She covered her mouth lightly with her hand and began to ball.
Despite the fact that Anna was crying, Jun couldn't help but to laugh. This was the best news he'd heard in quite some time. "I feel like dancing!" Reaching out to Anna, he grabbed her and tried to pull her to him. "I believe you owe me quite a few favors when we get back home," he told her.
Anna hugged him closely. "I'll do anything you want!" she said in between sobs. This was such good news. This was great news. In a week they could go home and things would be back to normal. In a week this will all be in the past.
"Easy!" he moaned as she hugged him. "I'm still a little on the fragile side."
The doctor's laughed. "Mrs. Higarashi, I know that your husband isn't fond of us; but please make certain he takes his medicine and adheres to our rules while he's out of our care."
Anna pulled back from Jun. "I promise he will be taken well care of. If I have to strap him down myself he will take his medication," she promised while smiling and wiping her eyes.
"Good." The doctor looked at the two of them before nodding and excusing himself, leaving Anna and Jun alone with Anna's doctor.
"Now that I kept up my end of the bargain," Jun said. "Please, let the doctor look at you."
Anna shook her head. "Not now, let's just enjoy this moment ok. I just want to enjoy good news for a little bit," she said taking his hands and sitting again.
Jun sighed, but he didn't argue. Leaning forward, he kissed Anna, pressing his lips against her's he hungrily nibbled on her bottom lip. "I love you, Anna Hisaragi."
"I love you too, Jun Higarashi," she said and laid her head in his lap once more.
Her doctor excused himself and left them alone. Anna crawled up onto Jun's bed and laid next to him. Now that he was healthy, doing that was ok. She snuggled against him while wrapping her arms around him.
Jun smiled and wrapped his arm around her. He thought that he was never going to get a chance to do this again. Just to hold her and be with her like this.
The week went by quickly. Jun was able to move around on his own, and even keep down his food. Not that he was too hungry after having to take mountains of pills, which sometimes Anna had to all but force down his throat.
After Anna brought him some clothes, Jun couldn't help but to laugh as he put on pants. "No more gowns for me!"
Anna smiled. "I had to go shopping to get a smaller size for you since you lost so much weight, but knowing you, you'll gain it all back before long," she said as she watched him change. His hair had already started to grow back. It was short, but long enough for Anna to run her hands through. Her parents had been by earlier to invite them to dinner but Anna said they were more than ready to just have some quiet time alone at the house.
Jun looked down at the pants and shrugged. "I could probably wear your jeans if I keep this up," he smiled. Putting on his shirt, he ran his hand over his chest. He'd lost a lot of weight and muscle going through this. It was going to be nice just to get home to somewhere he was familiar. Be in his own house, in his own bed. It was going to be wonderful.
"Are there news crews outside?" He wasn't certain if word of him being released had hit the press yet. He was really hoping that no one would see him like he was.
Anna sighed. "Yeah. If you had actually read the paper any while here you would see a tone of stories about you in it filled with tones of pictures of me coming and goes from the hospital. They follow me everywhere," she said. She looked away. "I had a cleaning crew clean the living room for us...and I burned the couch and carpet...they put new ones in. The news crew was there for that too."
Jun groaned. This was exactly why he didn't read the newspaper or watch the news. Whenever the television was on he had it on cartoons and nothing else. The news was just too depressing for him. Grabbing the hoddie that Anna had brought for him, he pulled it on and pulled the hood over his head. "Well, I guess I'll have to deal with them eventually. Right now I just want to get home."
Anna smiled and took his arm. They walked out of the hospital with nurses and doctors congratulating them. Once outside, the cops were keeping the press and news crew at bay as they shouted questions about Jun's tumor and Anna's baby. Anna ignored them helped Jun move to the car. She got him in the passenger seat then got in the driver’s seat. As soon as they started home, she took a deep breath.
"Home free," she whispered.
"About time," Jun whispered. Closing his eyes he relaxed as she drove them home. He nearly cried when he saw his house. It had been so long since he'd been there. Pulling up, he and Anna walked inside where he immediately felt better just because he was home. Taking a deep breath, he smiled as he wrapped his arms around Anna and kissed her. "It's good to be back."
Anna smiled and hugged herself too him. "You have no idea how happy I am to know that things will go back to normal. I'll go draw us a perfect back and give you a massage just like before to get you back in the groove of things," she said against him.
She kissed his neck then started upstairs. Once in her room, she started pulling clothes off. She looked at the bed. She hadn't slept in it since Jun was sent to the hospital. She hadn't slept much since then unless she was passed out. Slowly she walked over to the bed wearing nothing but her panties, bra, and skirt. Her stitches were still in her shoulder, neck, and thigh even though the swelling, bruising, and stitches were gone from her face. Her hand ran over the bed and she sat down. Laying back, she couldn't help but close her eyes. When did she sleep last? She couldn't remember... Her breathing eased and soon she drifted off.
Jun couldn't help himself. Going to his office, he turned on his computer. He had so much work to catch up on. Looking through the files, he sighed. Somehow he just didn't find this as exciting as he once did. Being so near death really put things into perspective. He sent off an email to the VP, telling him to keep up the good job. After which he went upstairs, curious as to why Anna had come down to yell at him.
Seeing her sprawled out on their bed made him smile. Slowly crawling in beside her, he kissed her chest, wrapping his arm around her as he held her close. Their bed was so much more comfortable then the hospital bed.
Anna's eyes fluttered open and she sat up. Looking over at Jun she yawned. "I fell sleep? I'm sorry." She stood and walked over to the bathroom. With the door open she turned on the water and gestured for him to come join her.
Jun muttered something beneath his breath as he got up and walked over for her. Before she could undress he wrapped his arms around her again and kissed her hungrily. Undoing her bra and sliding her skirt off of her, he smirked as his hand dipped into the warm water.
Anna pulled Jun's clothes off him with care and got in the water. She pulled him with her and sat down. He looked so different then the way he was months ago. She hand went to his thin face and caressed him. Slowly, she moved to him and pushed her lips to his. She felt that he was so thin she would break him, so she was gentle and soft.
