New Year's Date

Toshiki blinked.

“Huh?” he asked. Yumi pouted.

“You're spacing out on me,” she complained. “Were you even listening to me?”

“Oh,” Toshiki said. “No. Sorry about that.” Yumi huffed. He rubbed the back of his head as he nervously laughed.

“You're hopeless,” she said with a sigh. They were on another date. Yumi insisted on it.

“I want to spend New Year's with you,” she said. How could he say no? She wouldn't listen anyway. He's getting used to it. Besides, he has his own questions.

They walked around in town. Snowflakes gently fell. Yumi twirled around, giggling. She looked so precious. Toshiki had a smile on his face.

“So what are we doing today?” he asked. The girl turned to him and paused.

“We don't have to do much,” she said.

“Huh?” he asked. Yumi took him by the arm.

“I just want to be with you,” she said.

“Sure…” the veteran said. Yumi giggled. He nervously laughed. Oh boy…

---------

The couple didn't talk as they walked at first. Yumi smiled to herself. Still no answer again. That was okay. She could wait. Still, she had one question on her mind.

“Hey Toshiki,” Yumi said. The man turned his head.

“Yeah?” he asked. She shifted in place for a moment.

“Why did you ask me about reincarnation?” Yumi asked. Toshiki paused for a moment.

“Hm… you actually remind me of someone, I suppose,” he said, Yumi tilted her head.

“Who?” she asked. He shrugged and shook his head.

“I don't know. I can't remember her,” the veteran said. Yumi raised her eyebrow.

“Her?” she asked.

“Yes,” he said, nodding.

“What about her?”

“There isn't much, really. I don't remember much about her. I don't know her name or where she is. I don't even know if she's alive or not.” He saw her frowning.

“It's fine. Really,” the veteran said. Yumi said nothing.

“Hey!” he said. “Hey! It's fine. Um… Uh… You want to get some hot chocolate?”

--------

They made it to a caf. Yumi got hot chocolate and cake. She took a sip of her drink.

“Mmm,” she said. Toshiki sat across from her.

“Better?” he asked. His girl perked up.

“Yeah!” she said.

“Heh,” Toshiki said. Who knew sweets were all it took? He stared at her face.

“You've got something on your nose,” he said.

“What?” Yumi asked. He motioned and pointed to his nose.

“Oh!” she said as she wiped her nose.

“Am I good?” Yumi asked.

“Yeah,” Toshiki said. Yumi grinned. She looked down at his plate.

“Are you going to eat that?” she asked. He looked down at his plate.

“Hm? Oh,” he said. “I'll get there.” He picked up his spoon and took a bite.

“Mmm,” Toshiki said. He glanced at the girl.

“So is this what we're doing today?” the veteran asked.

“Uh-huh,” Yumi said. She giggled again.

“This is the second date,” the girl said. Toshiki stared at her wide-eyed. He should've known.

---------

“Where to now?” Toshiki asked. Yumi smiled and shrugged.

“Just around,” she said. The veteran said nothing at first. Sure, why not? They resumed their walk around town. He still can't figure her out.
