Strange Little Goddess

I still don't understand her. But she reminds me of someone. I want to say I don't know who. But that would be a lie. I looked at Yumi as we walked down the street. She looked like her.

“Hey,” I spoke up. She turned to me.

“Hm?” she asked. How was I going to say this? It sounded weird now that I thought about it. I frowned as I thought about what to say.

“You…” I tried again in my head.

“You… You remind me of someone,” I said. She stopped in her tracks.

“Who?” she asked.

“I don't remember her,” I said.

“Her?” she asked. My stomach turned. How was I going to do this? Even I didn't have a full picture.

“Someone I once knew,” I said.

“What was she like?” Yumi asked. I shook my head. I barely remember her. I think we were close. Yumi gave me a curious look.

“Did you love her?” she asked.

“I think I did,” I said. I couldn't help but see her face over Yumi's. I shook my head. What was wrong with me?

“Toshiki?” she asked.

“It's nothing,” I lied. “It's nothing.” She rubbed on my back. I moved away from her.

“I'm so sorry,” I said. “I don't mean to put this on you.”

“No, it's fine, really,” she said. “I'm here for you.” How can she be so sweet? She doesn't even really know me. She says that she loves me.

“But why?” I asked.

“What do you mean?” Yumi asked.

“You don't really know me,” I said. “I'm way older than you. There has to be boys your age that you like,” I said.

“No,” she said. I wrinkled my nose.

“But why me?” I asked. Yumi leaned her head on my arm. She didn't answer. This wasn't a silly crush, was it? But I can't push her away. I have to know the truth. Why do I think of her when I see Yumi's face?

“Take me somewhere,” she said.

“Huh?” I asked. She looked up at me.

“We're on a date after all,” Yumi said. I stared at her for a moment.

“Oh,” I said. “Right, right.” Right…

Yumi giggled as we kept walking. Just get through today and then dig through my memories and find out who she was.
