Fragile Heart

Miyukizi has always been there for Don. He seemed to appreciate it. Maybe not openly, but he certainly did. Their dynamic worked.

For the most part. But something has changed. She has changed. Miyukizi fell in love. But he doesn't see it.

She used to be okay with this. What changed? Well… quite a few things really.

First came the gas attack on the subway station. Life was short. She observed it daily in the news. Why was this different? The ladies in the office had their own theories.

“It's your heart,” one of them said.

“My heart?” Miyukizi asked.

“Yes,” she said. The secretary thought about this. There it was. Another big change.

The concept of a heart had been a foreign one to her. No one could fully describe it to her.

“What is a heart?” Miyukizi asked. Toshiki turned his head.

“What do you mean?” he asked. She tried to think of what to say. The words wouldn't come out. What was she asking? Toshiki leaned back in his chair.

“It depends on what you mean,” he said. “Are you talking literally? Metaphorically? Spiritually?” The secretary looked confused. She wasn't sure how to answer. The question has plagued her since.

But something else had changed. She didn't notice it at first. It only came out on the first day of fall.

Don came in on cloud nine. He walked in humming to himself. Everyone kept staring at him. Toshiki looked nervous.

“Boss?” he asked. Don turned with a grin on his face.

“Uh… boss?” Toshiki asked. “Are you okay?”

“Uh-huh,” Don said. The veteran shivered.

“Did something happen?” he asked.

“Uh-huh,” his boss said. Toshiki raised his eyebrow. He was scared to ask. Don leaned up close to his face. The veteran jumped back with a yelp.

“Go on,” Don said. “Want to guess?” Toshiki stood blinking.

“Uh… Uh… I don't know! What?” he said. Don chuckled and backed up.

“I have a date tonight,” he said. Miyukizi froze.

“What?” she asked Toshiki asked.

“That's right!” Don said. He broke down into happy chatter about his date. Meanwhile, Miyukizi tried to keep it together for the morning. She broke down crying in the bathroom by lunch.

All of this kept building up. Something had to give. It would be days before Halloween that Miyukizi would make the first move. When that happened, everything would change.
