Yumi's Answer

Toshiki found Yumi sitting alone at the kitchen table.

“There you are,” he said. The veteran didn't know how to approach the situation. Yumi didn't turn around.

“Sit,” she said. Toshiki walked around to the table and sat down. Yumi had a serious look on her face.

“I accept your answer,” she said. Toshiki stared at her.

“What?” he asked.

“I accept your answer,” she said again. The veteran struggled to respond. He closed his mouth. Yumi didn't miss a beat.

“This is all me talking,” she said.

“Yumi…” Toshiki said.

“No. Just listen.” Yumi cleared her throat.

“Thank you. I am me. I love you. These are my feelings. I know that she exists inside of me.” She put her hand to her chest.

“I know about her.” Yumi lifted her head.

“It was so weird. I knew that I was different. I never could figure it out.”

“Uh… What changed?”

“She spoke to me.”

“What?”

She didn't wait to keep going. “I don't remember when she started talking to me. I was scared at first. But she calmed me down and told me her story. I didn't understand her at the time.” Yumi looked off to the side.

“Is she here now?” Toshiki asked. She shot him a look. He put up his hands.

“My bad,” he said.

“Yes,” Yumi said.

“Hm?”

“She's part of me now. But I am not her! I am me! I'm Taira Yumi!”

“I believe you.”

She looked up at him with a curious look. He drew in a slow breath.

“I'll stop.”

“Thank you.” She paced herself for the big question. She shifted her shoulders from side to side.

“How do you feel about me?”

“Yumi…”

“Tell the truth. Do you truly love me or because she is in me?” She had a stern look in her eyes. The veteran strengthened his resolve.

“I love both of you. I love all of you. I know who you are.” He waited for a response.

“How are you going to make this work?” she asked.

“I will try.”

She pressed her forehead against his. For once, she had faith in him. The couple had their answers. But that was just the first step. They will have to see what happens next.
