"Please get some color, please. Just no more black." her mother pleaded with her in the juniors section of Macy's department store. If it had been anyone else she would have said deal with it because it wasn't going to change, but this was her mother and she couldn't say that without the risk of being slapped. Instead she simply said " I don't like colorful. Surely her mother would understand that she'd rather blend in with a crowd by wearing dark colors than stand out in it wearing the bright pink blouse her mother held up in front of her. "And besides, you know I can't stand the color pink." Her mother rolled her eyes. "I give up, If you wanna wear black for the rest of your life go ahead." Then leaving her daughter to fend for herself in the sea of clothes, she busied herself in the nearby jewelery section.
"Whatever", she shouted over her shoulder as her mother walked away. It had been a long day and she didn't fee like arguing or talking for that matter. The only thing on her mind at the time was finding something to wear for the three days she would be spending in Washington D.C while attending Katsucon 13 in two weeks. They had been to three stores already today and her tolerance for shopping was already wearing thin. "I always wear black to these things", she thought to herself aloud, ignoring the nearby teen staring at her with a puzzled look on her face. In a way that was true, though she had only been to one other convention since she left her longtime home in Honolulu. "I wore black to Otakon and so did everyone else. Why should this one be any different?" she said again speaking to absolutely no one. Then again, last year she wasn't planning to look like a clone or manage to snag a friend to stay in a hotel with.
The hotel room. She had completely forgotten about it due to all the craziness of the few days and the anticipation of the events that were soon to take place. "I'll be seeing him all day everyday for three days. I guess I could find something cute that also goes with black" By now the puzzled teen across from her had gotten used to hearing Nalani's random thoughts aloud and continued her shopping without another look in her direction. Thumbing through a few more racks, Nalani found something she thought might work and headed toward the dressing room.
Back when she met Armand in school a year ago during her sophomore year, he was a junior. She never imagined things would turn out quite like this. Partly their past was troubled, filled with many ups and downs and plenty of misunderstandings. They had started out as friends. Often they ate lunch together and even shared a class every other day, chatting through lessons and barely getting any of their work done. After a few months she found herself beginning to like him. He was weird by normal standards and a little crazy at times, but this is what intrigued her. She enjoyed the way he made her laugh and smile. Smiling, something she rarely did for anyone, was a constant outcome of their many conversations. She thought that he even liked her back, from all the little things he did for her. Then one day in June, Nalani got a huge wake up call. Armand had gotten himself a girlfriend. While browsing through profiles of her friends list on a popular website, she stumbled across pictures of the two together. She was heartbroken but, at the same time enraged. She felt as if all the time they spent together had been a complete waste. Nalani stopped speaking to him and Armand did the same.
Now seven months later by a strange turn of events, she has plans to stay with him for her second convention. Nalani did see Armand at Otakon, stopping to talk with him for first time in three months, while leaving the Saturday night rave. Other than that, the only contact she had with him since then were during the chance she had of seeing him in the halls of her high school where she often said 'Hello' and nothing more.
