“ Pay attention Poornima what have I just said young lady?” Ode, a Salmon captive, shouted at the tiny dark haired wolfling he had been told to teach. Ode smiled inwardly as she snapped to attention. A guilty look on her cherubic face. She reminded him so much of Meena ,his own baby girl, but he would never see his little Meena again or his beloved Minali. They were with the Gods now and all he could do was teach this little wolf pup and wait patiently until the Gods found the mercy to let him join them in the Away. “ I’m sorry Sir Ode I was just thinking about the mountains... Sir you lived outside the mountains didn’t you Sir?” He froze and after a moments pause answered. “ Ay I did young miss.” She stared at him unblinkingly. “ Then there is life outside of Conriglen?” He looked at her fearfully, the King had made it clear the things he could and could not teach his pupil. He had never spoken of the world outside the valley. So who had prompted her questions.? He feared the Gods conspired to lead him to his wife and daughter quicker than he anticipated. Pinching the bridge of his nose, his grey earfins fluttering in agitation he answered her as truthfully as he dared. “ Yes there is life outside of Conriglen, and before she could interrupt him and blurt out another dangerous question he inserted a falsehood into his truthful statement, but the life beyond the mountains is horrid full of hardships and death.” She looked at him eyes narrowing ever so slightly. “ Do you mean to say you prefer slavery to our King then freedom back home in your village?” His eyes flashed red at her words. Damn the little chit she tempts me to tell the truth but I dare not. “ Yes my life here as a slave is...easier.” She nodded absently and continued with her writing. Unsetttled at their talk he thought it best to end their session for today. It was a bright day the girl would prefer to be outside anyway and for his peace of mind he wished her so.
“ That is enough for today, Young Queen, off with you and practice your grammar you mustn’t speak like a common Bear and speak clearly for Hawk’s sake!”
