Chapter 6
Two weeks later
Nohime was in her chambers waiting for her bath to fill up. And She was wrong. It didn't change. He still treated her like a possession, not a person. She was miserable. She wanted to tell Mitsuhide that she didn't want to marry Nobunaga. But how would he react? He was so loyal to Nobunaga. Would he tell? And if he did, would Nobunaga even care? Probably not.
Although... her and Mitsuhide had become quite close. She would miss him if she were sent away or fled. It seemed she was always lonely here. Unless she was with Mitsuhide.
Lady Oichi and her were starting to talk more, but Nohime didn't really have anything in common with the woman. But she was nice. Nene mostly spent her time with Hideyoshi.
The man, Magoichi Saika had finally arrived last week. He was a mercenary with shoulder-length brown hair pulled up into a ponytail. He wore a hunting jacket with fur on the shoulders. On the back was the symbol of a peacock. He wore no shirt under the jacket. He had on a long necklace that fell to the middle of his chest. He was always seen with his musket/bayonet. He and Hideyoshi were indeed good friends.
Magoichi however, was a pervert. He was constantly asking Nohime and Oichi, and any other attractive woman, to come and “be” with him. Oichi always ran away to Nagamasa. Nohime on the other hand always turned him down the way a woman should: with her fists. Then she would walk away teasingly. Making him want what he couldn't have. She loved to torture less intelligent men. It was quite enjoyable.
But Lord Mitsuhide was the one that gave her the most enjoyment. They had become great friends. He had even told her of his late wife, and she had met his daughter Gracia. She was very sweet and she seemed to take a liking to Magoichi, whom she called Mago. And she followed him everywhere. It was cute and comical.
She was the only girl Magoichi hadn't tried to sleep with but then she wasn't interested in him that way either. She just wanted a pal she said. Like him and Hideyoshi are pals. He had finally agreed to be her pal and now they seemed quite close. Gracia grew quickly on everyone.
Eventually Nagamasa and Oichi had returned home to ÅŒmi. Afterward Nohime had learned from Mitsuhide that Lord Nobunaga left for battle in the middle of the night to attack the Asakura, breaking his promise to Nagamasa. She wondered what was going to happen within the next few days. Hopefully nothing bad.
Yuriko walked out of the room with the sliding doors and informed Nohime that her bath was ready. Nohime thanked her and asked her to send for Lord Mitsuhide. Yuriko bowed and told her she would find him and send him to her immediately.
Nohime walked into the washroom and slipped out of her kimono. She put the kimono on top of the privacy screen and moved the screen in front of the tub. Then she walked to the bathtub and stepped in. The water was warm and comforting. Inviting.
A knock sounded on the door. Nohime jumped a little and told the knocker to enter. It was Mitsuhide. “Nohime? You requested my presence?”
“Yes I did. I have something I want to tell you,” Mitsuhide grabbed a small chair and sat in front of the privacy screen. “What do you need to tell me?”
Nohime took a deep breath, “Lord Mitsuhide, I do not want you to think ill of me after I tell you this. I want it to be between us.”
“Of course Nohime,” His voice had grown concerned. She took another deep breath, “Lord Mitsuhide, I... I don't want to... marry Lord Nobunaga.”
There was silence, “Lord Mitsuhide?”
“I know you do not wish to marry him Nohime. I can tell by the way you look at him and respond to him. I saw the tear fall from your eye when you first arrived here. Never once did I believe that you would be a happy bride.”
“You are very observant Lord Mitsuhide... You are not upset with me then?”
“Never Nohime. Women are given so few choices. It is no wonder that you are upset and do not wish to marry my Lord. But there is no way out.”
“I know this. But Lord Mitsuhide... I have a favor to ask of you. If you will do it. It would make me so much happier about my inescapable situation.”
“What would you have of me Nohime?”
“Lord Mitsuhide, I do not wish for him to be the first to touch me. I wish that man to be a man of my choosing...”
“Lady Nohime, you cannot be asking what I think you are asking of me... are you?”
“What do you think I am asking you to do?”
“Something that I do not believe I could ever do.”
She pushed the privacy screen away, “I am asking you to be my lover, for one night. Then we can never speak of it again. I do not wish for Lord Nobunaga to take that from me. I do not want him.”
“But why choose me?”
“I trust you Lord Mitsuhide. I do not trust any other man here. You are different than the other men. And that makes you special to me,” she looked away, “If you do not wish to do this favor... I understand. But I'd rather it be someone that I myself care for and would willing give myself to than someone I do not care for and would not willing give myself to.”
“Lady Nohime, do you even know what you ask for?”
“I am not of lesser intelligence Lord Mitsuhide. I know what it is that I ask for.”
“I cannot do that Lady Nohime. I will not dishonor my Lord.”
“You are very loyal Lord Mitsuhide. I respect that.” Nohime rose from the tub and stood before him. His eyes widened.
Mitsuhide's eyes were glued to her now. Her long black hair was dripping wet, as was her body. His eyes seemed to follow every water droplet that slid down her body. He swallowed hard.
Nohime leaned forward and placed the sweetest kiss on his lips, “Please Lord Mitsuhide. Just once. Only once. Then we can forget it happened. Don't let him force my innocence away from me. I will not give it to him willingly. But you... I will gladly give it.”
Mitsuhide's breathing changed and he said, “Mitsuhide is all you need to call me Nohime. When we are alone that is,” he pulled her back down and kissed her cherry lips. Then he pulled back suddenly, “I can't believe I am going to do this. But I would not have you suffer internally. But not here and not tonight.”
“When Mitsuhide?” Mitsuhide smiled inside, just his name. She had said just his name. It sounded so sweet on her tongue.
“Lord Nobunaga is planning a battle meeting later this week. I will take an early leave from the meeting. But the meeting should last a few hours. We will have time then. We will meet in my room.”
“What day is the meeting?”
“I believe it is in four days. Unless things change. And that is highly possible given the fact that Lord Nobunaga has broken his promise to the Azai.”
Nohime frowned but then smiled, “Thank you for helping me Mitsuhide.” She kissed his lips softly then pulled back to grab her robe off a rack.
“You should go Mitsuhide, we do not want anyone to get suspicious. You have been gone quite awhile.”
“You're right. I will go now. And Nohime, I hope you truly understand the sacrifice you have asked me to make. Never would I deliberately betray Lord Nobunaga like this. To sleep with his future wife. But may the gods help me, I can't help myself. I couldn't say no forever. Your kiss broke my will. And I can only pray that `just this once' will be enough for us both.” Mitsuhide got off the chair he was sitting on and walked out of the washroom and into the main room and then out to the hallway.
Nohime couldn't believe he had agreed to her request. She was actually happy. Excited. But four days was such a long way away, or it seemed that way. And even worse, it could be longer than four days. She felt horribly guilty already for planning to do such a thing. For even thinking it. But gods so help her, she would not give Nobunaga the satisfaction of taking her first. She refused. She was not his possession. She was his future wife.
She thought about what Mitsuhide said, will one time be truly enough for them? She had been instantly attracted to him and it seemed the feeling had been mutual. Would once truly be enough?

Nobunaga and his retainers were sitting around the war map when an urgent message came, “Lord Nagamasa has betrayed us!”
Eyes widened and turned to Nobunaga. Nobunaga turned and he wore a face of raw anger, “We shall attack the Azai at dawn. Leave no survivor and bring me Nagamasa's head.”
All the retainers rushed out of the room to prepare for the surprise attack on the Azai Army. Nobunaga stopped Mitsuhide, “Mitsuhide, I do not want you in this battle. Stay here and protect Nohime. I know you will guard her well and you would sooner die than to let one hair on her head be cut.”
Mitsuhide went to his knee, “Yes my Lord. I will protect her with my life. Should danger arrive.”
“I know Mitsuhide. You are more than just a retainer to me. You are a friend.” Nobunaga walked out of the war room, Mitsuhide right behind him.
