Chapter One: In the Beginning5:45 PM September 7, 1993

Seiji smiled at his reflection. This was his last date with Yagiyu Nasuti. It was too bad she didn't know about the family curse.

Or is it good? He wondered if he was right. Kinshou Hina, his thirteen-year-old cat, mewed.

<Good luck> She mewed.

"Thank you. I am glad of your blessing." He replied.

Hina gave her approval in the form of a meow. Seiji smiled back at her.

"Do you really think that Nasuti will accept?"

< How could she not? >

Seiji smiled again. The doorbell rang. Hina walked off the pallet and out the slightly open rice-screened door.

<She will say yes, Seiji. I'd best go get the door>

Seiji smiled and walked after her. Ryo, Nasuti and *Torii were standing in the foyer.

"Nasuti, Ryo, Torii! Come on in!" He said.

He led them to his dining room. Torii and Ryo sat at on one side of the table, Seiji and Nasuti on the other. His grandfather hobbled in the door.

"He's still alive?" Nasuti whispered.

Seiji nodded.

"Jii-san. I am glad you could join us today. I am certain you had some other business to attend to." Seiji said.

Jii-san nodded. He clapped his hands and began to pray.

6:30 PM September 7, 1993

Seiji brought forth a small box. It was made of sandalwood and carved into the top was the kanji REI. He placed it in front of her ('her' being Nasuti). Hina purred from her place beside Ryo.

"Open it, Nasuti," Torii urged.

Nasuti lifted the lid with trembling fingers. Inside rested a jade bracelet. Carved into its largest stone was REI.
"Will you marry me?" Seiji asked. Please say yes!

Nasuti looked at his face. He could feel her eyes bore into his own.

She smiled a watery smile. "I thought you'd never ask. Seiji you fool, of course I'll marry you!" Nasuti said.

"WHOO!" Ryo burst out.

Seiji allowed a small smile. "We would like to be alone for a moment."

Ryo, Torii and Jii-san filed out of the room.

Seiji leaned close to Nasuti. Now I must warn her.

He brushed her cheek with his finger. "I want you to know the truth, Nasuti."

Her eyes flew open.

"I couldn't live with myself if you didn't know the danger."

"Danger?" She echoed.

"My family hates me. Yayoi doesn't hate me because I'll inherit the dojo…she hates me because I'm the product of a curse."

"Curse?"

"I'm a Daemon," Seiji said it simply. Best not to scare her off.

Nasuti smiled. She apparently thought he was being foolish. "Seiji, Daemons are not curses. They are blessings. They may be signs of dark times, but they are still blessings."

"An incredibly powerful Daemon whose heart is capable of great evil." Seiji said flatly. There was no emotion in his voice.

"Seiji, evil feels no love. You love me; I know it. You love me just as much as I love you."

"I hope you're right, Nasuti. I'd go crazy if I did something to hurt you." Seiji said. She knows some of the danger. But does she know how hard this is going to be?

She smiled and walked toward him.

"Shut up and kiss me," she said.

He shook his head. "I can't. "

Her eyes widened. She nodded after a moment.

At least she understands that much.

The reason I'm writing this is that I'm taking a break from Goddess in the Doorway. GitD is really bogging me down. ITDN is also a plotbunny.

My asterisk: Torii is an original character. She is Ryo's girlfriend and there's not much else to say about her.
