The Kaf - Notes
By Djinn Hashiba-Maxwell

*~*~*

In Muslim mythology, the Kaf is a mythical range of mountains that surrounds the earth, where all mythical creatures reside. I got the idea for this story while doing research for my fellow author Angel of Fire, so if it sounds similar to her stuff, that's why.

The Types of Spirits:

The djinn - evil and normally hideous spirits that roam the deserts. Can take on human or animal form. Singular - djinnee
The fravashis - literally 'she who is chosen'. benevolent spirits, like guardian angels, battle maidens who defend the heavens. Singular - fravashi
The mala'ika - an Arabic name for angels. Singular - mala'ika
The drujs - monstrous female spirits. Singular - druj
The korybantes - The followers of the mother goddess Cybelle, engaged in frenzied dances and orgies. Singular - korybante
The amesa spentas - the children or aspects of the Zoroastrian god
The yazatas - protective spirits and servants of Ahura Mazda, the chief Zoroastrian god.

For the purpose of my fic, all the above classifications, with the exceptions of the amesa spentas and the yazatas, are ethnicities, and therefore the amesa spentas and the yazatas can also be fravashi, mala'ika, etc.

The Hierarchy (from most to least revered):

The amesa spentas
The yazatas
The mala'ika
The fravashis
The korybantes
The drujs
The djinn

The Names/Words -

Ibilis - the Arabic name for Satan, viewed as the chief djinnee. Think of him as my Arago.
Ameretat - name meaning 'Immortality'
Anahita - name of the Zoroastrian goddess of fertility, a yazata
Haurvatat - name meaning 'wholeness', an amesa spenta
Sraosha - name meaning 'obedience', a yazata, called the 'Hearer of Prayers'
Toumawashi - meaning 'indirectly' or 'in a roundabout way'. Convenient, ne? *^.^*
Kaasama - very formal was of saying 'mother'
Basama - very formal was of saying 'aunt'

I will explain all the other obscure references I use at the end of each chapter, and they won't all be as bad as these first few paragraphs, so don't worry.
