Prologue
(Or "A Promised Party")

'Next time we'll have a real party, with no hidden motives. How's that Kenshin?'

Sanosuke Sagara was thinking of this promise as he was walking toward the Kamiya Dojo where he would probaly find Kaoru beating up Yahiko with her shinai, and his best friend Kenshin Himura, either doing laundry or playing with Ayame and Suzume.

'They really have become my family, no matter how strange they are,' laughed Sano.

Last time he had promised a party, it had just been a plan to try and leave the dojo unnoticed. He and his friend Katsu, also a former member of the Sekihoutai, had planned to sneak into the Department of the Interior in Tokyo, and blow it up. They had been seeking revenge for Captain Sagara and the Sekihoutai, who had been mercilessly slaughtered by the government for a crime they did not commit. But then Kenshin had showed up and stopped Sano from doing something that would have ruined his life forever, or possibly even cost him his life.

'Thanks, Kenshin, Buddy.' Sano thought to himself. 'I really owe you one. I think that this would be the perfect time to throw a surprise party for Kenshin. Especially after ..... Kyoto. It's been really hard for all of us to get back to our normal lives, but nobody has had a hard a time as Kenshin. I've never seen Kenshin be so stressed out and worried. I could kill all of those dirty Meiji government bastards. They knew Kenshin would do anything to stop Shishio from taking over Japan, knew he'd do anything to protect others, especially the ones he loved.'

When Kenshin, Sano, Saitoh, and Aoshi had gone up against Shishio, Kenshin had fought so hard to wear down Shishio, that he almost lost his life. But Kenshin had an incredibly strong swordsman spirit, and an incredibly strong will to live and had pulled through, much to the joy of everyone. The four of them had managed the impossible; they had conquered Shishio. Kenshin had had to leave everything he loved behind to protect Japan from Shishio. But now they were all back together again trying to start over and have normal lives again.(But then again with these guys, could anything ever really be normal?) The tears started to glisten in Sanosuke's eyes, but he wiped them roughly away.

'This party will cheer everyone up, but we'll have to work hard to keep it a secret from Kenshin. He wouldn't want us to fuss over him, but he really deserves this. I can't wait to see his reaction when we yell "surprise!!!" We'll have to invite everybody here and our friends in Kyoto. We'll also have to buy lots of sake so that me and Kenshin can have a drinking contest just like old times. That moron Saitoh will probably show up and tell us we're being too loud, but we'll just kick him out. Yep this is a great idea if I do say so myself. Damn, it's hot. I'd better get to the dojo and tell Kaoru about my idea. I bet she'll love it, she's been really worried about Kenshin lately too. Sure hope I'm in time for lunch, and I sure hope that it's Kenshin's cooking and not Jou-chan's.'

Sano walked through the streets of Tokyo, being very pleased with himself.
