Chapter 01: Anger and Annoyance Day

The dojo was closed up inside and appeared as if no one was home when Kenshin stepped through the gate. He sighed. Why would he ever actually believe Sano would be up this "early"?

Kenshin walked inside and opened the window shades to let the morning light stream in before heading towards Sano's room and knocking on the door.

"Sanosuke!" He called when no one answered. Kenshin heard someone grumble from inside and the ruffling of sheets before the door flew open, revealing an annoyed and rumpled looking Sano.

"It is a bit late, that it is," Kenshin said, folding his arms across his chest in an adorable manner.

Sano wearily raised an eyebrow at the redhead. "It can't be too late..." He checked the pocket watch that was sitting on his dresser. He frowned. "9:30?!" He asked like it was the most horrible thing in the world. "How could ya wake me up so early?!"

"It is not early," Kenshin said, glaring up at the brunette. "Besides, we have more work to do now that Kaoru and Yahiko are gone, that we do."

Sano groaned.

"And I already had breakfast at the Akabeko, so you'll have to get some food on your own, that you will," Kenshin added, smiling at Sano's frustration.

"What?!" Sano looked at Kenshin in disbelief. "You know I don't have money, and I have no idea how to cook!"

Kenshin hid a laugh behind his hand and walked back down the hall presumably to do the laundry.

Sanosuke shook his head in annoyance and glared at the samurai's retreating form. Guess I'll hafta do the usual... He thought, sighing and walking out of the door to the dojo.

The summer sun pounded on his back in an annoying way, making his back a bit too warm for comfort, and he figured that today everything he came across would generally be annoying. Kenshin had already annoyed him by getting him up "early", then he wouldn't even give him any money to buy breakfast.

Sano trudged grumpily across the bridge and down the dirt road towards his favorite refuge, the Akabeko. Though he had no money, he seemed to usually get his way with things one way or another...but apparently this time was different.

When he walked into the restaurant a brunette woman looked up from the counter and upon spotting him, rushed over.

Tae smiled up and him. "Well, hello Sanosuke," She said in her sweet southern accent. "I'm afraid I'll have to ask you something before you sit down to eat..." She trailed off.

Sano started to look annoyed, again. "What?"

"You see, my boss has been concerned about your frequent...erm...non-paying visits..."

"Get to the point, Tae," Sano said grumpily.

"Yes, well...do you have any money with you?" She asked, smiling nervously.

Sano blanched. "W-what...?"

"I said..."

"I know perfectly well what you said," Sanosuke snapped and turned around and stormed off.

Back at the Akabeko, Tae cursed. Once again she had forgotten to ask the brunette boy out.

"Now I can't even have a fucking breakfast!" Sano muttered as he stomped moodily back toward the dojo.

"The battousai?!" He heard someone say from his left and froze and turned his head. A group of rough looking men were smoking cigars and talking rather loudly in a circle.

"Ya mean to say we had the battousai in our grasp?!" The same man yelled.

Another nodded. "Yep...and ya let `im get away."

"Hey now," The other man said. "We didn't just let him get away...he got away, the tricky bastard."

Sano frowned and hid around the corner of the building they were by.

A third shook his head. "Shit...we could've made a lot on the battousai," He smirked. "After we were done with `im, that is."

Sano gritted his teeth in fury at what he was hearing. Himura Kenshin?! He thought. Captured and almost sold for pleasure?! He pounded his fist against the wall of the building. It probably happened this morning...if only I had been there...

He didn't want to hear another word from these sick bastards and continued storming down the road in more of a huff than he already was.

Kenshin dunked the clothing back into the soapy water of the bucket with a splash. As usual, his good-natured mood had disappeared once he was alone in the dojo and he bit his lip, his mind wandering to the happenings of the morning. He quickly brushed them away. It was really nothing to worry about too much, right?

He took the clothing out, wrung it out and set it hanging on the clothes line to dry. He then stretched and went inside to clean some dishes. But not much later than he had walked inside Sano came storming through the gate and up to the door.

Kenshin heard the front door bang open from the kitchen and soon Sanosuke came stomping into the kitchen with an angry and disturbed look on his face.

Kenshin blinked and set the dishes down. "Is something the matter Sano?" He asked worriedly.

Sano remained silent for a few moments before shaking his head. "No..."

Kenshin frowned, but didn't pester the man further. "So...did you get any breakfast?" He asked, quickly changing the subject.

"No..." Sano said again, still acting moody and staring at the floor.

Kenshin put on a smile. "I am sorry, Sano, I will make you something, that I will."

Sano looked up from the ground and put on a small forced smile. "...Thanks, Kenshin."

Kenshin nodded and started cooking with whatever dishes were left clean. Not long after, Sano was sitting at the table with a bowl of beef stew and a bowl of rice. Kenshin sat next to him, sipping from a cup of green tea.

Kenshin peered over at Sano, who was unusually taking small bites from his stew, but before he could say anything, the brunette spoke.

"Kenshin..." Sano started, staring down at the food.

"Yes, Sano?"

He paused. "...Did anything happen while you were out this morning?" He asked in a very serious tone.

Kenshin blinked in surprise. Could he know about...? "I-I suppose so, why?"

There was an awkward silence before Sanosuke banged his hand against the table, causing it to shake. "Damn it, Kenshin, why don't you tell me anything?!" He yelled, standing up.

"Sanosuke..."

"I shouldn't've even asked! I know what happened this morning!"

If possible, Kenshin paled. "H-how did you find out??"

"I heard the bastards talking about it in Tokyo!"

"Sano...it is not that big a deal..."

"Not that big a deal?! If they were just a bit smarter, they could've...!" Sano trailed off not wanting to say what they could've done. "Look, Kenshin, I don't think it's a good idea to have you out in the streets alone---"

"Sagara Sanosuke!" Kenshin said, standing also and frowning up at the taller brunette. "You know perfectly well I can take care of myself, that you do!"

"Then how'd you fucking get caught?! If they were to take you away..." ...I don't know what I'd do without you, Kenshin... Sano admitted to himself.

Kenshin turned his back, with his arms folded over his chest.

Sano sighed and placed a hand on Kenshin's shoulder. "I'm sorry Kenshin, but it's for your own good..." He heard a small sniff from the small redhead.

"You have no idea what's good for me or what I want, that you don't, Sanosuke," Kenshin said icily before pushing Sano's hand away and running down the hall toward his room, leaving behind a bewildered Sano and now cold stew.
