Epilogue

(An inn not far from Shimo-suwa, around midnight on Toshio's birthday)

Toshio tossed and turned, unable to sleep. Sanosuke was in the next room, listening to her break out crying once in a while. He wondered if he should have stayed with her, if she needed him to lean on. Within seconds, if he had been found in Toshio's room, he would have left with a knot on his head.

"Toshio... Sweetie, wake up," said a familiar voice.

Toshio had just gone to sleep and turned away from the noise. She figured she was just having an early dream and pulled the blankets over her head. A smile formed on a handsome face as he looked down on his sleeping daughter.

"Come on Toshio," he persisted, laying a hand on his daughter's shoulder. "Wake up, honey."

Toshio turned over and one violet eye fluttered open. Her mouth dropped open and she sat bolt upright, leaning back in shock. She wondered if she had finally gone off the deep end. Or was it real?

"Daddy?" she asked timidly. "Is that really you?"

"Don't be afraid, sweetie," he answered, smiling. "It's me."

Souzou reached out to cup his daughter's cheek in the palm of his hand.

"You're looking more like your mother each day," he commented. "You know, when you were first born, everyone said you would take after me... And in a way, you did..."

"How's that?" asked Toshio, blinking at him and trying to comprehend all that was going on around her.

"Same hard head," laughed Souzou, tapping his daughter's forehead with one finger.

Toshio laughed, then bit her lip as a tear streamed down her cheek.

"Why did you leave, Daddy?" she asked, her voice soft.

Souzou took a deep breath and shook his head.

"Let's not talk about that," he said firmly. "The point is I'm here now, right?"

Toshio smiled and nodded emphatically as her father got to his feet and pulled her up with him.

"Now how about a birthday dance with your dad, huh?" he asked, smiling at her.

Toshio wrapped her arms around her father as he did the same for her. An unfamiliar song about a dance with a father slowly began to play in their heads. Souzou stood and held his daughter close, giving his daughter the sweet sixteen dance she had dreamed of.

"Happy birthday Toshio," he whispered as the song ended, dropping a soft kiss on her silky hair. "Happy sweet sixteen..."

Toshio just smiled and let another tear fall on her father's shirt.

"Just remember that no matter how old you are, even on your wedding day," murmured Souzou, squeezing his daughter tight to him. "You'll always be my little girl..."

"I never said I wanted to stop," whispered Toshio.
