KENJI'S FIRST SCHOOL PLAY
Part Two

....."Come Kenji-chan, we must hurry. You mustn't waste time with Yahiko-CHAN."

"STOP CALLING ME LITTLE!!"

Kaoru and Yahiko were ready to fight. Kenshin came over, "Maa, maa (Now, now), we mustn't be late. Shall we go?" Kenshin took Kenji by the hand. Everyone headed for the school.

********************************************

There was a large crowd gathered at the school for the play.

"Class, your teacher Arishima-dono will not be here today, said the principal. "She is sick."

The children looked disappointed. "Don't worry, I have a substitute" the principal said. She has worked with some of you before. She will direct the play. Yoshida-san Sayuri please come in."

The principal left after the teacher walked into the room. "It is good to see all of you again class," Yoshida-san said. "Now we must hurry everyone. Your parents are waiting to see you perform."

The teacher smiled at all the children until she spotted Kenji and Fujio. She sighed, "Oh no not those two again. Why me, why me?"

Kenji looked at the substituted teacher. "I remember you," he cheerfully said.

"Yeah you're the teacher that let us play in the corner all day," Fujio added.

The teacher looked up and silently prayed, "Kami-sama please help me!!" She then turned around calmly and smiled at the children.

"Hai, hai, I remember both of you too. Now please take your places. We are about to begin."

Yoshida-san turned her back to the children and sighed inwardly. "This is going to be a long night, especially with those two little monsters in the play." She pulled out a small container from her obi and began sipping some saki. She slipped it back into her obi and smoothed out her kimono before turning around to face the children. "Now, let us begin shall we," she grinned widely.

The teacher motioned for the curtains to be pulled back. She smiled out into the audience and greeted them with a bow.

"Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen to our first school play. The play you will be seeing tonight is entitled, The Little Empress and the Golden Panda." She opened a large fable book and began reading from it.

"Once upon a time there was a beautiful little empress who received a golden panda as a gift. The little empress..."

While the story was being told, Kenji and Fujio were waiting for their parts.

"This is boring," said Kenji. "You want to play a game?"

"Hai," Fujio answered. Let's play rock, paper, scissors; that's my favorite game." They began playing.

Out in the audience, everyone was paying attention with the exception of Sano. He had fallen asleep and had begun to snore loudly. Kaoru frowned and elbowed him in the ribs.

"Wake up! You big Jerk!"

Sano reflectively grabbed his ribs. "Ouch that hurts! What happened? Did Kenji come out yet? Did I miss something?"

"No," Kaoru hissed. "Now pay attention!"

Sano muttered and grumbled, "Man this stuff is boring". He looked around, "Where's the free food?"

"Ouch!!"

Kaoru had elbowed him in the ribs again. Kenshin smiled as he watched Kaoru give Sano another tongue lashing. He then glanced over to Hiko. Hiko was sitting between two women with a bottle of saki in his lap. "You ladies want to see my battle scars."

The women giggled. Kenshin hung his head and sighed, "Shishou is hopeless."

He began to look around again. This time, he spotted Saitoh sitting in the back. Kenshin began to growl and put his hand on the hilt of his sword. Saitoh spotted him too. He also began to growl at Kenshin and put his hand on his sword. Kenshin stood and was about to go over to Saitoh when all of a sudden, he felt himself being yanked back by his ponytail.

"Oh no you don't," Kaoru scowled. "Get back over here!"

"Orooo," Kenshin yelped as he fell back down into his seat.

Saitoh grinned wolfishly at Kenshin before noticing a deadly glare from Tokio. He cleared his throat and focused back on the play.

At this point, the play was half over. Fujio was now on the stage standing next to a little girl. The little girl was reciting her part,

"...I would rather die than give up my golden panda. I will fight you until the bitter end."

(Fujio begins to speak.....)

Kenji was still in the back playing by himself. One of his classmates tapped Kenji on the shoulder.

"Hey Kenji, did you hear that? She said the word "fight". I think that's where your part starts."

Kenji ran out onto the stage with his wooden sword in hand.

Kaoru became excited when she saw Kenji. "Oh look! There's Kenji!!"

Kenji held his sword high into the air, "Here I am, your brave swordsman." Then he began to fight Fujio.

Sano sat up once he heard the fight scene.

"It's about time we got some action in here."

The teacher shouted, "No! No! Kenji it is not time yet!" She quickly ushered him off stage.

Kaoru stood up and shouted, "How dare you take my son off stage! Bring him back right now!"

The principal tried to calm her down. "Himura-san, your son will be out soon, please be patient."

Kaoru started to go toward the stage. Kenshin yanked her back by the ponytail.

"And just where do you think you are going?"

Kaoru grumbled as she sat down.

The teacher apologized to the audience for the mix up.

"We will start the last scene over again." She looked at Makiko, "Please continue."

Makiko nodded. She turned to Fujio and began her line over again.

"I would rather die than give up my golden panda. I will fight you until the bitter end."

"Those are brave words for a little empress," Fujio said. If you do not tell me where the golden panda is, you shall remain in that cage forever."

"I am not afraid," Makiko stated. "For I know that my brave swordsman will come and rescue me. Oh look... I see him now..."

(Everyone looked around, but no one appeared. The teacher whispered, "Makiko repeat your line") Makiko nodded her head. She repeated again

"Oh look... I see my him now..."

(Everyone looked around again, but still no one appeared). Kenji was sitting on the floor humming and playing.

"HIMURA KENJI, GET OUT HERE RIGHT NOW," the teacher shouted.

Kenji glanced toward the stage upon hearing his name.

"I think it's time for your part", said one student.

"Okay, watch my stuff. I'll be right back," Kenji said.

Kenji walked out on stage. Kaoru looked at him with tears in her eyes. She hugged Kenshin tightly.

"Oh Kenshin, that's our baby out there."

"Ka... Kaoru"...gasp, gasp..."you're choking me. I can't breathe", Kenshin choked out.

"Sorry Kenshin," she said before dropping him to the floor.

"Oroo!"

Kaoru stood up and began waving her hands, "Kenji! Kenji! Look! It's mommy!"

Kenji heard his mother's voice. He looked into the audience to find her. When he saw all the people and became afraid.

"I better get the saki ready," Hiko said while grabbing a couple of saki jars. Kenshin glared at him.

The teacher looked at Kenji and whispered, "Go ahead, say your part. You can do it."

Kenji finally remembered what he had to say. He mustered up his courage and began his lines.

"Here I am," he said. Your brave swordsman."

enshin, Kaoru, Yahiko, Sano, Megumi, Tsubame, Ayame and Suzume all stood up, cheered, whistled and clapped for Kenji.

Hiko shouted, "TAKE A BOW! TAKE A BOW!"

Kenji smiled and bowed. Hiko proudly said, "That's my grandson up there!!" He took out his sword. "I demand everyone to get up and clap for him."

The audience immediately stood up and clapped. The teacher said, "Ladies and Gentlemen, please, please. The play isn't over yet. Could everyone please sit down."

After the audience became calm and took their seats, the teacher turned her back and began grumbling.

"I knew that family was trouble. I should have called in sick." She took another sip of saki.

The teacher turned to Kenji and urged him to continue with his part. Kenji walked over to a paper cage:

"Here I am, your brave swordsman. I will fight for you. I will set you free from this cage."

"Please be careful," Makiko said. "I am afraid for you."

"Do not be afraid. I will defeat the enemy and set you free," Kenji replied. Before making his way to Fujio, Makiko turned to him and said,

"Wait, before you go into battle, I must give you a kiss."

Kenshin whispered to Kaoru, "Why didn't you ever kiss me before I went into battle."

"You never let me," she replied.

"You never asked," he counered with a smile.

Kaoru frowned and whacked him on the head.

"Kenshin you idiot! Shut up and watch the play!"

"Oroo!"

"Go ahead Makiko, kiss him on the cheek," the teacher whispered. Makiko leaned over and tried to kiss Kenji. He jerked his cheeks back.

"Oh no you don't. You're not going to kiss me."

"Kenji-chan, let her kiss you," the teacher urged.

"No! I only agreed to do the fighting scene," replied Kenji. "You said nothing about kissing ugly girls."

Makiko put her hands on her hips, "What did you just call me Himura Kenji!"

"Ugly," he repeated.

Makiko bottom lip began to quiver. "Waah! Waah! He called me ugly."

The teacher ran out and tried to console her. She turned to Kenji, "Now look at what you have done. You have made Makiko cry. Why did you call her ugly?"

"Because my uncle Yahiko said that girls are ugly and I should never let ugly girls kiss me. I should just stick to fighting."

Kaoru grabbed Yahiko and yelled, "WHAT DID YOU TELL MY SON!!"

"I didn't mean all girls are ugly, just you," he said mockingly. "Ugly! Ugly!"

Kaoru and Yahiko began fighting. The principal and Kenshin tried to break them up but got hit in the process. The audience was getting out of control. The teacher went to help the principal.

Kenji looked at Makiko. She was still crying. He walked over to Makiko and rested his hand upon her shoulder.

"I'm sorry to call you ugly."

Little Makiko looked at him and continued to sniff and sob.

"You're not really ugly," Kenji said.

She stopped crying to ask, "I'm not?"

Kenji nodded, "No. You look okay for a girl." Makiko smiled, "Arigato Kenji." Kenji smiled back at her. "But I'm still not letting you kiss me," he said. "That's Okay," she responded. I didn't want to kiss you anyway."

The audience had finally settled down. "Now without further delay," the teacher glared at Kaoru and the rest of the Kenshin-gumi, "we will conclude our play with this last scene." She then nodded to Fujio. "Go ahead with your part."

"I will never release the little empress," Fujio stated firmly. "You must defeat me first."

Tokio tapped Saitoh on the shoulder. "Wake up dear."

"What!" Saitoh growled.

"You asked me to wake you up for the fighting scene," Tokio said.

Saitoh sat up and grumbled, "It's about time."

Fujio and Kenji were battling. The men in the crowd became wild.

"Fight! Fight! Fight!" They chanted.

Sano was standing on the side taking bets.

"How much for the Himura kid!"

One man said, "Here's two bits."

Another man said, "I have five dollars!"

Sano shook his head. "Come on, gentlemen, you can do better than that. After all he is the Battousai's kid."

A third man said, "Here's ten dollars!"

Sano smirked, "Now you're talking. (heh, heh, heh)"

Kenji defeated Fujio. Fujio is now lying down playing dead. Kenji forgot his line. Kenji looked down at Fujio and whispered, "Psst Fujio, I forgot my part."

Fujio sits up, "Oh, You're suppose to say good always triumphs over evil."

"Arigato Fujio."

"You're welcome," Fujio said. He waved to his aunt in the audience and laid back down pretending to be dead.

Kenji raised his sword and concluded his part, "Good always triumphs over evil."

The teacher entered the stage again and said, "The End." The audience clapped. The Kenshin-gumi went wild, cheering and clapping. The play was over. The audience started to leave.

Saitoh jumped up and shouted,

"NO! That's not the end! Fujio, get up! Don't let him beat you with that weak defense! Use the Taikuu Gatotsu to counter his attack!"

Kenshin stood up also.

"How dare you call my son's defense weak!"

Saitoh smirked, "All your attacks are weak Battousai."

Kenshin put his hand on the hilt of his sword, "Come let me show you how weak my attacks really are."

Saitoh, called out to his nephew, "Fujio come and watch your uncle defeat this weakling." Saitoh eased into his Gatotsu stance. They both began glaring at one another.

Fujio looked at Kenji and shrugged his shoulders. "There they go again."

"Hai," Kenji said. "They play more than we do."

Fujio nodded. "So what do you want to do now?"

Kenji thought for a minute, "How about coming to my house to play."

"Okay." Fujio put his arm around Kenji and said, "Kenji-chan, you're my best friend."

"Mine too," smiled Kenji.

They walked off the stage toward Kaoru and Tokio. Kaoru looked at Kenshin and Saitoh and shook her head.

"Those two will be at this all night."

Tokio nodded, "I agree."

"Let's take the boys to my house for a little while," Kaoru suggested. "After they have eaten, we can have a cup of tea together while they play."

"That would be nice," replied Tokio. "We'll come back for the men later." Kaoru and Tokio took the boys and left.

Sano was standing outside of the school lending against the doorframe.

"Not bad," he said counting the money he won from the fight. "I must come to these things more often."

He looked over and saw the principal. Sano walked up and put his arm around the principal's shoulders.

"So, when's the next school play?"

The principal slipped from under his arm and began running.

Sano shouted, "Wait! Come back! I'll share my winnings! Come back!"

The principal kept running. Stared after him.

"Geez! What's wrong with him." His stomach suddenly began to growl. He looked around and found a few leftovers and began sampling them.

"Hmm, not too bad. I guess this will have to do until I get back to the dojo. I better hurry before Yahiko eats everything. The little punk. I'll beat him to a pulp if he didn't save me anything." He began running towards the dojo.

Everyone had left the school except for Hiko. He walked out of the school and glanced over to where Kenshin and Saitoh stood staring at one another.

"They're both idiots," Hiko muttered. He decided to walk near the back of the school. He found the teacher off to the side sipping sake. He smiled as he approached her.

"I love a woman that can hold her saki, especially a beautiful one."

The teacher blushed and smiled. Hiko put his arm around her, "Come with me. I'll show you some of my battle scars over a bottle of saki."

The teacher giggled as she and Hiko walked away.

Kenshin and Saitoh were the only ones left at the school still standing, staring each other down.

Two hours later, Kaoru and Tokio returned to the school to reclaim their husbands.

"KENSHIN NO BAKA!! LET'S GO!" Kaoru yanked him by the ponytail.

"Orooo!"

Saitoh smirked as he watched Kenshin being dragged down the road by Kaoru. Seeing him occupied allowed Tokio to ease into Saitoh's pocket and grab his cigarettes.

Saitoh reached for his cigarettes and found that they were now in Tokio's hands.

"Not my cigarettes! Tokio! Come on, anything but that!"

"Next time it will be your white gloves," Tokio scowled. "Now, let's go!" Saitoh grumbling all the way back to his house.
