Promise Me Tomorrow, I'll Give You Forever

By: Rabie an Rose

Megumi stood before him, her hand reaching out. Sanosuke stared. Her mouth shaped into a lovely smile.

Remember Sanosuke…The promise…

Sanosuke found himself waking towards her. But every time he did, she slunk further away.

Sanosuke sat up. He ran his hand through his brown hair and blinked his eyes. "Again?" He murmured.

He had fallen asleep in the dojo again. The dream of Megumi and the promise haunted him.

What Promise?

Someone knocked on the door. Sanosuke picked himself up off the floor. What a pain, Kaoru or Kenshin wasn't there. They had left on a vacation and left Sanosuke in charge. How he had protested when Yahiko got to go. Oh well, to him it was just more time to be alone with himself.

He walked out into the rock garden and slid open the main door. He stared into the soft blue eyes of Megumi. "Megumi, what are you doing here?"

Megumi smiled sweetly, "I missed you Sanosuke. I haven't been around the dojo for a while."

Yeah five years! Sanosuke thought. Where have you been all my life Megumi?

Megumi looked around him, "Where are the others?"

Sanosuke Turned and let her in, "They're on a vacation. What are those bags for?"

Megumi looked at him, "Perhaps I shouldn't stay. I was hoping Miss Kaoru would let me stay and visit for a few days. But since they're not here, I'll come back some other time."

Sanosuke laughed and a light blush came over the bridge of his nose, "Nonsense Megumi, you live to far away. We'll set you up a room here."

Megumi smiled, "thank you Sanosuke. I was afraid…"

Sanosuke looked confused. Megumi shook her head, "Never mind. So where am I going?"

Sanosuke led her into the dojo. He took her bags and carried them to Yahiko's room. "Here you can stay here." He helped Megumi set up her belongings. When they were done, Megumi turned to him, "I'm so happy we're alone. It felt like centuries since we've been together. I was only a girl but now…"

Sanosuke interrupted her, "What are you talking about Megumi?"

Megumi looked hurt, "You mean…you don't remember?"

Remember what Megumi? Sanosuke thought. I don't know what your talking about, but at the same time, I have the feeling I do…

Megumi closed her eyes then reopened them. Sanosuke watched in shock as a single tear rolled down her cheek. He reached up and wiped it with one finger. She held his hand, "How could you forget?"

Forget what? Sanosuke looked deep into her eyes, "Megumi I…I don't know what your talking about."

Megumi gently put his hand down, "Five years ago, you and I…we were just kids. Both nineteen. We stood in front of the fireplace. And there you promised me-"

Sanosuke turned, "Your talking in circles Megumi. Get some rest."

Megumi watched his shadow disappear. She brought her hand up to her chest. He didn't remember.

Sanosuke stood in front of the fireplace. He creased his eyebrows in confusion. Oh Megumi, If only I could remember. I had a strange feeling of remembrance when you started talking but… Sanosuke snapped his fingers. Wait a minute…

Megumi stood in the doorway watching him. His body glowed in the firelight and his shadow danced patterns over the wall. She saw his eyebrows knit in confusion then a look of realization. Megumi slowly approached him.

Sanosuke looked down at her standing before him. She looked more mature. She had the look of a woman in her eyes. She reached out and hugged him. Sanosuke gasped in shock.

Megumi held on, she didn't want to let go. Somehow she felt that if she held on, he would remember. Inhaling his manly scent, she sighed. No, she never wanted to let go. Suddenly, she felt herself being pushed away.

Sanosuke stared down at her. His nose and cheeks turning crimson.

Megumi blinked and looked again. He was embarrassed. Maybe she had done something wrong. "I'm sorry." She apologized. She turned to leave.

Sanosuke latched his hand around her wrist and pulled her back to him.

Megumi's eyes opened wide in shock. Although she was surprised, she put her hands on his waist.

Sanosuke gently cupped the side of her face and his lips brushed over hers. He pulled back and away.

Megumi sighed and stared into the cinnamon eyes that she had gazed deep into so long ago.

Sanosuke stared into the fire, "I promised you tomorrow…" He whispered.

Megumi's eyes lit up with joy, he had remembered. "I gave you forever."

Sanosuke drew her into his arms and kissed her. "I'm so sorry Megumi."

Megumi smiled up at him, "I forgive you. None of it matters now Sanosuke. You remembered your promise."

Sanosuke kissed her again. Megumi, now, we'll have forever…
